Leipzig, Ambrosius Barth, 1928. 8vo. In contemporary full cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Annalen der Physik", Vierte Folge, Band 87. Entire volume offered. Library labels pasted on the pasted down front free end paper. Stamp to title page, othrewise a fine copy. Pp. 55-129 [Entire volume: (1), 736, VII pp.]. First appearance of Bethe's important doctoral thesis on the theory electron diffraction by nickel crystals which remains of fundamental value in understanding observational data. "Bethe obtained his doctorate-summa cum laude-in 1928 with a thesis that analyzed and explained the results that Clinton Joseph Davisson and Lester Germer had obtained in their experiments on electron diffraction by nickel crystals. When the de Broglie wave length of electrons is comparable to the lattice spacings of a crystal they diffract in a manner similar to x-rays. Bethe made use of the methods that von Laue and Ewald had formulated for x-ray diffraction by crystals and found that their results could readily and successfully be adapted to the electron case." (DSB)."Bethe was one of the great physicists of the twentieth century. After the advent of quantum mechanics, in two classic articles published in 1933 in the Handbuch der Physik he detailed the applications of the new quantum theory to atomic and solid state physics. After the discovery of the neutron in 1932 in a series of articles in the Reviews of Modern Physics, he did the same for nuclear physics. In 1938 he formulated the nuclear physics responsible for energy production in stars. During World War II he contributed importantly to the development of radar and of atomic weapons. Because of his involvement in making A- and H-bombs possible, he subsequently devoted considerable efforts in limiting further developments of atomic weaponry and bringing about international agreements for the reduction of extant nuclear weapons and the curtailment of their production and design. He made Cornell University, his base of operation from 1935 until his death, an outstanding center of theoretical physics and a model research community in all branches of physics." (DSB).

Kjøbenhavn (Copenhagen), Gyldendal, 1872. 8vo. Nice contemporary brown half calf with gilt spine. Capitals and corners worn and spine with some worn patches. Occasional brownspotting. Old owner's names to front end-papers. (2), VIII, 85, (1) pp. Scarce first edition of the first Danish translation of Mill’s seminal “Utilitarianism”, translated by the great Georg Brandes. Mill’s “Utilitarianism” constitutes a classic within the field of moral and political thought and is considered "the most influential philosophical articulation of a liberal humanistic morality that was produced in the nineteenth century." (Encycl. Of Philosophy). Originally published as a series of three separate articles in 1861, it was collected and printed as a single work under the canonical title in 1863. This publication is now considered the classic exposition and defense of Utilitarianism in ethics, a revolution within moral philosophy. The work was translated into Danish by the immensely influential literary critic Georg Brandes, by many considered the greatest intellectual of his time. Brandes played a key role in introducing especially German and British thought to Scandinavia, most notably the works by such thinkers as Darwin and Nietzsche. He is also the first to translate Mill’s works and make them accessible to a Scandinavian readership. His translation of “Utilitarianism” appeared in 1872 and was responsible for spreading the utilitarian philosophy to a wider audience in the North. The idea of Utilitarianism became immensely influential in Scandinavia. It inspired, for instance, Haralds Høffdig (1843-1931) to formulate the welfare principle, contributing to the formation of the welfare state that the Scandinavian countries are so famous for.

Kiøbenhavn, Möller, 1774. 8vo. Uniformly bound in two nice contemporary half calf bindings with five raised bands and richly gilt spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. All edges coloured in red. A nice set. (32), 448 pp.; (16), 511, (1) pp. The uncommon first edition of Schønheyder’s educational work on Christianity. Johan Christian Schønheyder (1742 – 1803) was a Danish-Norwegian clergyman. He earned his theology degree in theology from the University of Copenhagen in 1760, at just 17 years old. After studying in Germany from 1765 to 1768 he accompanied Christian VII as a German travel chaplain on the king's grand tour to Germany, the Netherlands, Great Britain, and France. Schønheyder served as the court chaplain at Christiansborg from 1769 as the parish priest at Trinitatis Church in Copenhagen from 1771 to 1782, at Vor Frue Church also in Copenhagen, and as the dean (stiftsprost) of Zealand from 1782 to 1788, after which he became the bishop of the Diocese of Trondhjem until his death. He was the last bishop of the large diocese (which encompassed all of Norway north of Dovre) before it was divided after his death. Schønheyder had a strong interest in education of which this present work is a fine example.

Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 1956. 4to. In publisher's red full cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Hinges loose and cloth to lower part of hinges with tear. Lbrary stamp to verso of title page. Internally fine and clean. XXX, (2), 452 pp. First edition of Ventris and Chadwick's exceedingly important work which constitutes the very first practical translation of Linear B (a syllabic script that was used for writing Mycenaean Greek - the earliest form of the Greek language) and certainly the earliest thorough discussion of Linear B translation. The decipherment of Linear B was not only of great interest to scholars and researchers, but also profoundly influenced European cultural history and affected how to define 'The Cradle of Europe': It demonstrated a Greek-speaking Minoan-Mycenaean culture on Crete, and presented Greek in writing some 600 years earlier than what was thought at the time.Linear B was initially deciphered by Ventris and Chadwick between 1951 and 1953. They published they first theories is 1952 in a short paper, a work which is still surrounded by much controversy; the present work is the first to contain what is generally accepted as the first thoroughly satisfying deciphering of Linear B. In a BBC radio program in 1952 Ventris concluded that the tablets (the ones translated in the present work) were Greek, and that there finally seemed to be a logical explanation to the mysterious signs: "One of the most interested listeners to the broad cast was a young Cambridge philologist specializing in Greek, John Chadwick. At the time, the Ventris theory was just the latest in a long line of supposed "solution", every one of which had failed. But Chadwick, who had himself failed to read the tablets on the assumption that they were Greek, was interested. On July 9, Chadwick wrote to [Ventris], congratulating him on the solution. They formed a close association and together wrote a report of the decipherment [Their 1952-paper]. It gave a decidedly confusing explanation of the decipherment. And it did not gather up all the loose ends." (Kahn, The Code Breakers, P. 933.)."At the time [in the early 50ies] the Linear B tablets from Knossos in the island of Crete were considered to be the earliest documents in the Greek language. Now the ancient Greeks have been claimed by Hellenists from the late 18th century onwards to be the founders of European civilization, all other peoples with an Indo-European linguistic heritage being excluded for some reason or another. In the description mankind's history, the absence or presence of the art of writing is even used for making the rather haphazard distinction between prehistory and history. So one can very well imagine why the island of Crete in offering hospitality to the first writing Greeks was proclaimed [...] the cradle of Europe." (Binsbergen, Black Athena Comes of Age, Pp. 102-3.).

Kiøbenhavn, Hallager, 1773 & 1774. 8vo. Uniformly bound in four contemporary full calf bindings with five raised bands and richly gilt spines. All edges coloured in red. Light wear to extremities, a few stains and scratches to boards. "F. C. Raben", Danish Count and traveller, in gilt lettering to spines. Stamp ("Christiansholm", Danish castle, owned by F. C. Raben) to each title-page. A nice set. (16), 425, (7) pp.; 395, (5) pp.; 396, (4) pp.; 426, (6) pp. Rare first Danish translation of Batteux’ “Les Beaux-Arts”, originally published in French in 1746, where he attempted to find a unity among existing theories of beauty and taste in "a single principle". His views were widely accepted, not only in France but throughout Europe. “The decisive step towards the system of the fine arts (thereby to the modern idea, "fine art") was taken by the Abbé Batteux in his famous and influential treatise ... [making him] the first to set forth a clearcut system of the fine arts in a treatise devoted entirely to this subject.” (Paul Oskar Kristeller, "The Modern System of the Arts”). “In 1746 he published his treatise Les Beaux-Arts réduits à un même principe, an attempt to find a unity among the various theories of beauty and taste, and his views were widely accepted. The reputation thus gained, confirmed by his translation of Horace (1750), led to his becoming a member of the Académie des Inscriptions (1754) and of the French Academy (1761). In the Beaux-Arts, Batteux developed a theory which is derived from Locke through Voltaire’s sceptical sensualism. He held that Art consists in the faithful imitation of the beautiful in nature. Applying this principle to the art of poetry, and analysing, line by line and even word by word, the works of great poets, he deduced the law that the beauty of poetry consists in the accuracy, beauty and harmony of individual expression. This narrow and pedantic theory had at least the merit of insisting on propriety of expression. His Histoire des causes premières was among the first attempts at a history of philosophy, and in his work on Epicurus, following on Gassendi, he defended Epicureanism against the general attacks made against it.” (Encyclopedia Britannica). (Copenhagen, 1754). 4to. In recently blue paper covered card board binding with white paper-label title-label to front board. Previous owner's name to pasted down front end-paper. Ex-libris pasted on to verso of front free end-paper. Without wrappers as issued in "Videnskabernes Selskabs Skrifter", internally a nice and clean copy. Pp. 189-216. Uncommon first edition of Kraft’s work on the immortality of the Soul is part of his philosophical engagement with the materialist debates of the 18th century. Here Kraft argues against materialist conceptions of the soul, particularly those put forth by La Mettrie in his “L'Homme Machine”. Kraft disputes La Mettrie's claim that the connection between thought and the body implies a causal relationship. He acknowledges that rational beings have larger brains than irrational ones and that thought is influenced by bodily conditions, illnesses, and emotions. However, he maintains that these observations only demonstrate a connection, not causation. Kraft distinguishes between time and eternity, arguing that while the finite can never attain eternity, it can achieve an infinite time with a beginning but no end. He contrasts this with the permanence of the infinite. Jens Kraft (1720–1765) was a Dano-Norwegian mathematician and philosopher. He was born in Frederikshald in Norway. While still a student in Copenhagen, he was influenced by Christian Wolff, having attended one of Wolff’s lectures during a visit to Halle. Later he was appointed professor of philosophy at the Sorø Academy, where he responded to Baumgarten’s Metaphysica with his own work, Metaphysik. Both philosophers structured their works into four divisions: Cosmologie, Ontologie, Psykologie, and Naturlig Theologie.

Berlin, G. Reimer, 1844. 4to. In "Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik, 28 Band, 1 Heft, 1844". In the original printed wrappers, without backstrip. Fine and clean. [Eisenstein:] Pp. 28-35; Pp. 36-43; Pp. 44-48; Pp. 49-52; Pp. 53-67. [Entire issue: IV, 96, (2) pp. + 2 folded plates.]. First printing of six exceedingly influential papers by the German mathematics prodigy Eisenstein. Even though he died prematurely at the age of 29, he managed to prove biquadratic reciprocity, Quartic reciprocity (Presented in the present: "Lois de réciprocité"), Cubic reciprocity (Presented in the present: "Nachtrag zum cubischen Reciprocitätssatze..."), to be imprisoned by the Prussian army for revolutionary activities in Berlin and making Gauss state that: "There have been only three epoch-making mathematicians: Archimedes, Newton, and Eisenstein". Alexander von Humboldt, then 83, accompanied Eisenstein's remains to the cemetery. The papers presented in the present issue is among his most prominent and made him famous throughout the mathematical world. (James, Driven to innovate, P. 88). "The twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth volumes of Crelle's Journal, published in 1844, contained twenty-five contributions by Eisenstein. These testimonials to his almost unbelievable, explosively dynamic productivity rocketed him to fame throughout the mathematical world. They dealt primarily with quadratic and cubic forms, the reciprocity theorem for cubic residues, fundamental theorems for quadratic and biquadratic residues, cyclotomy and forms of the third degree, plus some notes on elliptic and Abelian transcendentals. Gauss, to whom he had sent some of his writings, praised them very highly and looked forward with pleasure to an announced visit. In June 1844, carrying a glowing letter of recommendation from Humboldt, Eisenstein went off to see Gauss. He stayed in Göttingen fourteen days. In the course of the visit he won the high respect of the "prince of mathematicians," whom he had revered all his life. The sojourn in Göttingen was important to Eisenstein for another reason: he became friends with Moritz A. Stern-the only lasting friendship he ever made. While the two were in continual correspondence on scientific matters, even Stern proved unable to dispel the melancholy that increasingly held Eisenstein in its grip. Even the sensational recognition that came to him while he was still only a third-semester student failed to brighten Eisenstein's spirits more than fleetingly. In February 1845, at the instance of Ernst E. Kummer, who was acting on a suggestion from Jacobi (possibly inspired by Humboldt), Eisenstein was awarded an honorary doctorate in philosophy by the School of Philosophy of the University of Breslau.Eisenstein soon became the subject of legend, and the early literature about him is full of errors. His treatises were written at a time when only Gauss, Cauchy, and Dirichlet had any conception of what a completely rigorous mathematical proof was. Even a man like Jacobi often admitted that his own work sometimes lacked the necessary rigor and self-evidence of methods and proofs." (DSB)
