Copenhagen, A/S Regnecentralen, 1964. 8vo. In the original yellow printed wrappers. "Gier Algol 3. Kurt E. Larsen" written in hand to front wrapper. 67 pp. A bit of wear to extremities and a bit of soiling, internally clean. First edition of the Gier Algol III manual, a users' manual of the Algol 60 compiler system. The Algol 60 programming language was exceedingly influential and innovative and gave rise to many other programming languages, such as BCPL, B, Pascal, Simula and C. It is stated on the title-page that this is the "Second edition of A Manual of Gier Algol", which means, not that this is a later printing/edition of the paper, but that it is the second version of Gier Algol, being the 3rd paper in the Algol series. "Where Algol 58 was considered quite properly to be a draft, Algol 60 was appreciated, almost immediately, as a rounded work of art. It was to become a universal tool with which to view, study, and proffer solutions to almost every kind of problem in computation." (Origins of Cyberspace 813)."The language was designed by a committee of American and European computer scientist to address some of the problems with Fortran programming language. It had significant influence on later programming language design. John Backus developed a method for describing the syntax of the Algol 58 programming language. This was revised and expanded by Peter Nauer for Algol 60 and the resulting approach is known as Backus Naur form." (O'Regan, Gerard. A brief history of computing, 2008, 80 p.).The Gier Algol was developed by the leading Danish computer scientist at that time: Henning Christensen, Gunnar Ehrling, Jørn Jensen, Peter Kraft, Paul Lindgreen, Knuth-Sivert Skog, Peter Willemoes and Peter Nauer, the later being a pioneer in computer science and in 2005 he won the ACM A.M. Turing Award for his work on defining the ALGOL 60 programming language. The N in the BNF notation stands for Nauer. (Backus-Naur form).

London, Victor Gollanoz, 1936. 8vo. Orig. blue full cloth w. gilt lettering on spine. Spine a bit soiled, otherwise nice and clean, also internally. Rare first edition of Ayer's most important and well known work, in which he presents his Verification Principle, which defines a sentence as being meaningful if, and only if, is has a verifiable empirical import. He began writing the book at the young age of 24, and two years later it was published. Ayer is considered a clear and stringent writer. "Ayer's philosophical ideas were deeply influenced by those of the Vienna Circle and David Hume. His clear, stringent and polemical exposition of them makes "Language, Truth and Logic" essential reading on the tenets of Logical Positivism -- the book is regarded as a classic of 20th century analytic philosophy, and is widely read in philosophy courses around the world." (Wikipedia). The great logical positivist, Sir Alfred Jules Ayer (1910-89), was Grote Professor of Philosophy of Mind and Logic at the University College London from 1946 till 1959, and afterwards he became Wykeham Professor of Logic at the University of Oxford.

Leipzig, Ambrosius Barth, 1928. 8vo. In contemporary full cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Annalen der Physik", Vierte Folge, Band 87. Entire volume offered. Library labels pasted on the pasted down front free end paper. Stamp to title page, othrewise a fine copy. Pp. 55-129 [Entire volume: (1), 736, VII pp.]. First appearance of Bethe's important doctoral thesis on the theory electron diffraction by nickel crystals which remains of fundamental value in understanding observational data. "Bethe obtained his doctorate-summa cum laude-in 1928 with a thesis that analyzed and explained the results that Clinton Joseph Davisson and Lester Germer had obtained in their experiments on electron diffraction by nickel crystals. When the de Broglie wave length of electrons is comparable to the lattice spacings of a crystal they diffract in a manner similar to x-rays. Bethe made use of the methods that von Laue and Ewald had formulated for x-ray diffraction by crystals and found that their results could readily and successfully be adapted to the electron case." (DSB)."Bethe was one of the great physicists of the twentieth century. After the advent of quantum mechanics, in two classic articles published in 1933 in the Handbuch der Physik he detailed the applications of the new quantum theory to atomic and solid state physics. After the discovery of the neutron in 1932 in a series of articles in the Reviews of Modern Physics, he did the same for nuclear physics. In 1938 he formulated the nuclear physics responsible for energy production in stars. During World War II he contributed importantly to the development of radar and of atomic weapons. Because of his involvement in making A- and H-bombs possible, he subsequently devoted considerable efforts in limiting further developments of atomic weaponry and bringing about international agreements for the reduction of extant nuclear weapons and the curtailment of their production and design. He made Cornell University, his base of operation from 1935 until his death, an outstanding center of theoretical physics and a model research community in all branches of physics." (DSB).

Kjøbenhavn (Copenhagen), Gyldendal, 1872. 8vo. Nice contemporary brown half calf with gilt spine. Capitals and corners worn and spine with some worn patches. Occasional brownspotting. Old owner's names to front end-papers. (2), VIII, 85, (1) pp. Scarce first edition of the first Danish translation of Mill’s seminal “Utilitarianism”, translated by the great Georg Brandes. Mill’s “Utilitarianism” constitutes a classic within the field of moral and political thought and is considered "the most influential philosophical articulation of a liberal humanistic morality that was produced in the nineteenth century." (Encycl. Of Philosophy). Originally published as a series of three separate articles in 1861, it was collected and printed as a single work under the canonical title in 1863. This publication is now considered the classic exposition and defense of Utilitarianism in ethics, a revolution within moral philosophy. The work was translated into Danish by the immensely influential literary critic Georg Brandes, by many considered the greatest intellectual of his time. Brandes played a key role in introducing especially German and British thought to Scandinavia, most notably the works by such thinkers as Darwin and Nietzsche. He is also the first to translate Mill’s works and make them accessible to a Scandinavian readership. His translation of “Utilitarianism” appeared in 1872 and was responsible for spreading the utilitarian philosophy to a wider audience in the North. The idea of Utilitarianism became immensely influential in Scandinavia. It inspired, for instance, Haralds Høffdig (1843-1931) to formulate the welfare principle, contributing to the formation of the welfare state that the Scandinavian countries are so famous for.
