(16), 374 pp.; (28), 338 pp. Uncommon first edition of this set containing various works by German theologian Baumgarten. Baumgarten studied theology at the University of Halle where he later became a professor. His work primarily focused on the integration of Enlightenment rationalism with Lutheran orthodoxy, aiming to reconcile faith and reason. Baumgarten's theological approach emphasized historical-critical methods, laying the groundwork for a more scientific and historical analysis of the Bible and Christian history.

Berlin, Springer, 1935. 8vo. Bound in contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering, In "Zeitschrift für Physik", Band 96, 1935. Entire issue offered. Two stamps to title page, otherwise fine. Pp. 431-458. [Entire volume :VIII, 801 pp]. First printing of Weizsäcker's exceedingly important paper containing the first appearance of Bethe-Weizsäcker formula, or Semi-Empirical Mass Formula (SEMF), a theoretical formula relating the curve of nuclear binding energy, nuclear masses, and certain other nuclear properties. In nuclear physics, the semi-empirical mass formula (SEMF) (sometimes also called Weizsäcker's formula, the Bethe-Weizsäcker formula, or the Bethe-Weizsäcker mass formula to distinguish it from the Bethe-Weizsäcker process) is used to approximate the mass and various other properties of an atomic nucleus. As the name suggests, it is based partly on theory and partly on empirical measurements. The theory is based on the liquid drop model proposed by George Gamow, which can account for most of the terms in the formula and gives rough estimates for the values of the coefficients. Although refinements have been made to the coefficients over the years, the structure of the formula remains the same today. The present volume also contain conttributions by Wener Heisenberg: Die Struktur der leichten Atomkerne.

Letter from Haldane to "Principal Rattray" pasted on the front free end paper: "12 Nov 1922 / Dear Principal Rattray, / MERE ". Author's presentation inscription to top of half title: "Principal Rattray / from the Author / In memory of her verses to the University / College of Leicester 11 feb 1922.". Corners and capitals a bit bumped. Dust jacket with wear and some loss at extremities, especially capitals and lower part of back jacket, no loss of text anywhere. Internally very nice and clean. XIV, 302, (4, -advertisements) pp. First edition of Haldane's important work with presentation inscription to Principal Rattray, published the year after his main and most famous work "The Reign of Relativity". In that work Haldane had propounded a theory that Einstein's theory supported the thesis that the distinction between knowledge and that which is known is a distinction within knowledge itself. "He therefore mistakenly treated Einstein's "observer" as if it were akin to Kant's "transcendental unity of apperception". "The Reign of Relativity", in consequence became a compendium of F.H. Bradley and Bernard Bosanquet, a defense of vitalism in biology continued in "The Philosophy of Humanism and other Subjects" (1922), and even a vindication of the general will. " (D.S.B. VI:26). Robert Fleming Rattray (1886-1967) became Pastor of the Great Meeting in Leicester in 1917. "He was a strong supporter of both the adult education movement and the Lit. and Phil. and of the scheme, promoted by the Society among other organisations, to establish a University in Leicester. In early 1921 he was approached to be the planned College's first Principal and in May 1921 he was appointed as the first Principal of the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland College (later University College, Leicester). Rattray joined the Lit. and Phil. on his arrival in Leicester in 1917. In 1920, already well-established as a teacher and writer on philosophy, his first major contribution to the Lit. and Phil. was to assist in the setting up of a new Philosophy Section in 1920, with Rattray as its first Chairman. In its first year, 1920-21 Rattray gave a course of six lectures on "Some Fundamental Problems of Philosophy and the following year he gave a second course of eight lectures on "modern" (i.e. not classical or medieval) philosophers, covering Descartes, Spinosa, Leibnitz, Locke, Berkeley, Hume and Kant. He remained at Leicester as Principal of the University College until 1931 when he moved to Cambridge to become Pastor of the Unitarian Memorial Chapel, and remained in Cambridge after his retirement through to his death at the age of 81." London, Macmillan & Co., 1932. 8vo. Orig. full brown cloth w. gilt lettering to spine. Orig. brown dust-jacket w. wear and a bit of loss to corners and capitals. Otherwise and excellent and clean copy w. only some occasinal minor brownspotting. XIV, 247 pp. First edition of this standard work on wages, Hick's first major work, in which he proposed the macroeconomic hypothesis about INDUCED INNOVATION and foreshadowed important later developments in neoclassical distribution theory. Sir John Richard Hicks (1904 - 1989) was one of the most important and influential economists of the twentieth century. He has contributed seminally to moth micro- and macro-economics and in 1972 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences together with Kenneth Arrow for "pioneering contributions to general economic equilibrium theory and welfare theory."As a labor economist, Hicks already in 1932, aged 28, wrote his first major work, his very important "Theory of Wages", which serves as a fundamental basis for recent theories of distribution, now widely developed in e.g. Cambridge. Hick's early work is still considered standard in the field, and a vast amount of literature has been published on his hypothesis of induced innovation, which is presented in this work for the first time. The theory is formulated as thus: "a change in the relative prices of the factors of production is itself a spur to invention, and to invention of a particular kind-directed to economizing the use of a factor which has become relatively expensive." And this theory has also frequently been applied to increases in energy costs, which would thus come to motivate a quicker improvement in energy efficiency. But not only did Hicks here propound the still influential theory of induced innovation, this work is also considered as foreshadowing many of his later theories, which have become significant contributions to neoclassical distribution theory; e.g. a reformulation of marginal productivity theory, further development of the product exhaustion theorem, a macroeconomic theory of relative factor shares etc., etc. "The object of this book is "a restatement of the Theory of Wages in a form which shall be reasonably abreast of modern economic knowledge." The treatment is based on the Marginal Productivity theory, although that theory is stated in a rather new way, designed to facilitate its use in realistic study of the labour market. This is followed by a more general study of the working of the labour market under competitive conditions, and by a theory of the secular forces governing the general level of wages. The second part of the book deals with the regulation of wages. There is a chapter on the Theory of Industrial Disputes, and one on the economic forces which have facilitated the Growth of Trade Union Power in England. The last chapters contain a detailed analysis of the effects of wage-regulation on unemployment, including the distribution of unemployment between industries, and the prospects of a reduction in unemployment through an increase in productivity." (Front of dust-jacket).A second edition appeared in 1963.The work is scarce in the original dust-jacket.
