Paris, Eugène Renduel, 1830. Beautiful cont. hcalf w. richly gilt back and gilt ornamental border on both boards. Printed on fine paper. Minor brownspotting, otherwise internally nice and clean. An excellent copy. Rare first edition. An early work by the renowned author, Paul Lacroix (1807-1884), who was famous for his several important historical works and his numerous works of bibliographical contents, regarding which he can be said to have continued the tradition of Nodier. He wrote a number of historical novels, which were very popular at the time, and of which Les Deux Fous is considered one of the best. They were reprinted numerous times, and were translated into several languages; -most of them deal with the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, a period not commonly investigated at that time. Most of his works are published under pseudonym, because of which he is now best known under the name of "Bibliophile Jacob". Aged 28 he was awarded the cross of the "Légion d'Honneur" for his work on the history of the 16th century, and 1842 he founded "L'Alliance des Arts" together with M. Thoré. Carteret 2;14. Not in Barbier.

Halae Saxonum, Orphanotrophii, 1731. 8vo. In a nice contemporary Cambridge-style mirror binding with four raised bands and richly gilt spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Leather on boards cracked, with a few holes in the leather, making the wooden boards underneath visible. Internally very nice and clean. (16), 542, (46) pp. First edition of one of the earliest histories of philosophy to appear in Germany, "Buddeus (1731: p. 25) begins his history with “the philosophy of the Hebrews”, identifying Adam as its ultimate progenitor, “for although he lost a large part of human wisdom [in the fall], it is very probable that he retained some fragments and remnants of it”. After Adam, Buddeus discusses the wisdom of later patriarchs such as Noah, Jacob, and Moses, eventually culminating in the teachings of the Cabbala. The second stage of philosophy’s history begins with “the philosophy of the gentiles, especially the barbarians” (Buddeus, 1731: p. 37), under which he groups the ancient Chaldeans, Persians, Phoenicians, Sabeans, Indians, Muslims, and Africans. About the last, Buddeus (1731: p. 64) writes: “In Africa, besides the Egyptians, the Libyans, and the Ethiopians, they are said to have been unacquainted with philosophy. But there are a few obscure and uncertain things that have become known to us about it” (these “obscure and uncertain things” turn out to be merely ancient reports of gymnosophists and astronomical learning in Ethiopia). The third stage of philosophy’s history is Greek philosophy, followed by medieval philosophy (in which Buddeus mentions a number of Islamic philosophers, but says little about their teachings). The final stage is “more recent philosophy” (Buddeus, 1731: p. 363), which curiously ends not with any European philosopher but with an ancient Chinese one: Confucius. Buddeus appears to have included Confucius because of the great interest in him in Europe that followed the publication in 1687 of Confucius Sinarum philosophus, sive scientia Sinensis latine exposita [Confucius, philosopher of China, or Chinese knowledge expounded in Latin] (Intorcetta, Herdtrick, de Rougemont, & Couplet, 1687)." (Wang, Racism and Eurocentrism in Histories of Philosophy).Johann Franz Buddeus (1667-1729), born in Pomerania, was professor of Greek and Latin, moral philosophy and theology at Leipzig and Halle.

(London, Richard Taylor and William Francis, 1854). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1854, Vol. 144 - Part I. Pp. 177-228, 3 fine textillustrations in woodcut. Clean and fine. First appearance of this importent paper in which Graham coins the word "dialysis" denoting the passage by diffusion of dissolved substances as a function of their concentration and molecular mass. In this way he further explained 'exomosis'."Thomas Graham (1805-1869) studies diffusion in gases and solutions and discovers and names the phenomenon now known as the osmotic force. He finds that certain substances (i.e. glue) pass more slowly through membranes than others (i.e. common salt). He calls the former colloids and the latter crystalloids and introduces the notion of dialysis to describe these observations. The beginning of his famous lecture "On osmotic force" with illustrations is shown on the right."(From Anders Gedeon "Science and Technology in Medicine", p. 244, where part of the first page and the illustrations from the offered paper, are shown).Garrison & Morton: 686 ("Investigation on osmotic force; provided importent information for the physiologists").

Rasende over at være forbigået udsendte Heiberg Suum cuique. Til mine Medborgere (1798), hvori han indgående og vidtløftigt udbreder sig om professor Olsens uduelighed og fremhæver sin egen fortræffelighed. Olsen svarede naturligvis igen, og notarialfejden var i gang. De to hovedpersoner krydsede klinger flere gange, og mange andre blandede sig i striden, heriblandt Malthe Conrad Bruun med Beviis at en monarkisk Regjering ikke er forbunden at bortgive Embeder efter de Søgendes Dulighed (1798)." lyn43913
(Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1857). Without wrappers. In "Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg. von J.C. Poggendorff", Bd. 102, No 12. Pp. 481-644 a. 1 folded engraved plate. (Entire issue offered). Kirchhoff's paper: pp. 529-545. Clean and fine. Firs appearance of Kirchhoff's first paper on conductivity in which he presents his Circuit-Law. The significance of this paper is that Kirchhoff proved with action at a distance that electric disturbances travel along wires of neglible resistance with the velocity of light. He accomplished this with the laws of Newtonian electrodynamics before Maxwell formulated his equations."The theory of variable currents raised more difficult problems. The law of dynamical interactions between currents had been formulated by Ampere (1826) in the spirit of the concept of action at a distance....The field was still open when Kirchhoff entered it in 1857 with his own general theory of the motion of electricity in conductors (in the paper offered). His first paper, in which he treated linear conductors from the same premises as Weber, turned out to coincide in all essentials with an investigation carried out by Weber shortly before but delayed in publication. Both physicists noticed a remarkable implication of their theory: in a perfectly conducting circuit, oscillating currents could be propagated with a constant velocity, independent of the nature of the conductors, and numerically equal to the velocity of light. Both Weber and Kirchhoff however, pointing to the extreme character of the condition of infinite conductivity, dismissed this result as a mere accidental coincidence."(DSB VII, p. 380-81).

Wien, Julius Springer, 1929. 8vo. Bound in a contemporary full cloth with red title label with gilt lettering to spine. Previous owner's name [Bent Schultzer, Danish professor in philosophy] to title page. A fine and clean copy. VI, 114 pp. First edition of Carnap's Abriss der Logistik which constitutes one of very first textbooks in modern logic, the influence of which was immense. The basic purpose of Carnap's publication is to make the logical system, from Russell and Whitehead's seminal work within mathematical logic, Principia Mathematica, available to a broader audience. "While published a year after Hilbert and Ackermann's more prominent Grundzüge der theoretischen Logik [1928], Carnap's Abriss - essentially finished in 1927, largely independant of Grundzüge, and circulated widely - also had significant influence, especially in Vienna, where Carnap taught at the time." (Creath, The Cambridge companion to Carnap. P. 181).Carnap himself wrote about Abriss: "In 1924 I wrote the first version of the later book, Abriss der Logistik . It was based on Principia. Its main purpose was to give not only a system of symbolic logic, but also to show its application for the analysis of concepts and the construction of deductive systems".Rudolf Carnap was an influential German philosopher who was active in Europe before 1935 and in the United States thereafter. He was a leading member of the Vienna Circle and a famous advocate of logical positivism.
