.London, Printed by Taylor and Francis - Published by the Author, (1862-) 73. Folio. Papersize 54,5x36,5 cm. Lithographed and fully handcoloured. Two birds, female and male outside the nest on a cliff, natural sorroundings. J. Gould & H.C. Richter, del. et lith. - Walter & Cohn, Imp. Fine and clean. The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.

Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1950. 8vo. In the original red cloth, spine with gilt lettering. Dust jacket with miscolouring to spine and upper and lower capitals with a with tears. Ex-libris (Knud Lundbæk) pasted on to pasted down front end-paper. Inner front hindge split. Otherwise a good copy. XVII, (1), 607, (1) pp. First edition of Carnap’s important work on inductive logic which “led to a renaissance in the use of probability theory to model the inductive process” (Cambridge Companion to Carnap). He here turned his attention away from the more traditional deductive inferential frameworks on which he had so far primarily focused and towards the newer probabilistic and statistical frameworks now being constructed and applied with increasing frequency in the physical, biological, and social sciences. Rudolf Carnap (born 1891 in Ronsdorf, Germany, died 1970 in Santa Monica, California) was an immensely influential analytic philosopher, who has contributed decisively to the fields of logic, epistemology, semantics, philosophy of science, and philosophy of language. He was one of the leading figures of the Vienna Circle, and a prominent logical positivist. He studied philosophy, physics and mathematics at the universities of Berlin and Freiburg, and worked at the universities of Jena, Vienna and Prague until 1935, when he, due to the war, emigrated to the U.S., where he became an American citizen in 1941. In America he became professor of the University of Chicago.

BATTEUX, CHARLES.

Kiøbenhavn, Hallager, 1773 & 1774. 8vo. Uniformly bound in four contemporary full calf bindings with five raised bands and richly gilt spines. All edges coloured in red. Light wear to extremities, a few stains and scratches to boards. "F. C. Raben", Danish Count and traveller, in gilt lettering to spines. Stamp ("Christiansholm", Danish castle, owned by F. C. Raben) to each title-page. A nice set. (16), 425, (7) pp.; 395, (5) pp.; 396, (4) pp.; 426, (6) pp. Rare first Danish translation of Batteux’ “Les Beaux-Arts”, originally published in French in 1746, where he attempted to find a unity among existing theories of beauty and taste in "a single principle". His views were widely accepted, not only in France but throughout Europe. “The decisive step towards the system of the fine arts (thereby to the modern idea, "fine art") was taken by the Abbé Batteux in his famous and influential treatise ... [making him] the first to set forth a clearcut system of the fine arts in a treatise devoted entirely to this subject.” (Paul Oskar Kristeller, "The Modern System of the Arts”). “In 1746 he published his treatise Les Beaux-Arts réduits à un même principe, an attempt to find a unity among the various theories of beauty and taste, and his views were widely accepted. The reputation thus gained, confirmed by his translation of Horace (1750), led to his becoming a member of the Académie des Inscriptions (1754) and of the French Academy (1761). In the Beaux-Arts, Batteux developed a theory which is derived from Locke through Voltaire’s sceptical sensualism. He held that Art consists in the faithful imitation of the beautiful in nature. Applying this principle to the art of poetry, and analysing, line by line and even word by word, the works of great poets, he deduced the law that the beauty of poetry consists in the accuracy, beauty and harmony of individual expression. This narrow and pedantic theory had at least the merit of insisting on propriety of expression. His Histoire des causes premières was among the first attempts at a history of philosophy, and in his work on Epicurus, following on Gassendi, he defended Epicureanism against the general attacks made against it.” (Encyclopedia Britannica). Leipzig, Ambrosius Barth, 1919. 8vo. In contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Annalen der Physik", Vierte Folge, Band 59. Entire volume offered. Hinges weak a library labels pasted on the pasted down front free end paper. Stamp to title page, othrewise a fine copy. Pp. 101-133; Pp. 743-752. [Entire volume: VII, (1), 760 pp.]. First printing of WEYL ambitious paper in which he used the Stoney units, named after the Irish physicist George Johnstone Stoney, to unify quantum processes and gravity thereby seeking to create a "Unified Field Theory". The paper appears to have inspired Dirac's fascination with the large number hypothesis. Also contain in this volume is the first appearance of EÖTVÖS' important paper in which he explains the eastward deflection of falling objects. In the paper, he also describes a device with which the effect can be demonstrated experimentally. The Eötvös effect is the change in perceived gravitational force caused by the change in centrifugal acceleration resulting from eastbound or westbound velocity. When moving eastbound, the object's angular velocity is increased (in addition to the earth's rotation), and thus the centrifugal force also increases, causing a perceived reduction in gravitational force. This phenomenon had been observed in the early 20th century on research ships on which gravity was measured; they noticed that measurements of g yielded smaller values when the ship went eastward, and larger ones when they went westward. These observations are mentioned by Eötvös in a paper in which he provides the explanation of the effect.

Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 1956. 4to. In publisher's red full cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Hinges loose and cloth to lower part of hinges with tear. Lbrary stamp to verso of title page. Internally fine and clean. XXX, (2), 452 pp. First edition of Ventris and Chadwick's exceedingly important work which constitutes the very first practical translation of Linear B (a syllabic script that was used for writing Mycenaean Greek - the earliest form of the Greek language) and certainly the earliest thorough discussion of Linear B translation. The decipherment of Linear B was not only of great interest to scholars and researchers, but also profoundly influenced European cultural history and affected how to define 'The Cradle of Europe': It demonstrated a Greek-speaking Minoan-Mycenaean culture on Crete, and presented Greek in writing some 600 years earlier than what was thought at the time.Linear B was initially deciphered by Ventris and Chadwick between 1951 and 1953. They published they first theories is 1952 in a short paper, a work which is still surrounded by much controversy; the present work is the first to contain what is generally accepted as the first thoroughly satisfying deciphering of Linear B. In a BBC radio program in 1952 Ventris concluded that the tablets (the ones translated in the present work) were Greek, and that there finally seemed to be a logical explanation to the mysterious signs: "One of the most interested listeners to the broad cast was a young Cambridge philologist specializing in Greek, John Chadwick. At the time, the Ventris theory was just the latest in a long line of supposed "solution", every one of which had failed. But Chadwick, who had himself failed to read the tablets on the assumption that they were Greek, was interested. On July 9, Chadwick wrote to [Ventris], congratulating him on the solution. They formed a close association and together wrote a report of the decipherment [Their 1952-paper]. It gave a decidedly confusing explanation of the decipherment. And it did not gather up all the loose ends." (Kahn, The Code Breakers, P. 933.)."At the time [in the early 50ies] the Linear B tablets from Knossos in the island of Crete were considered to be the earliest documents in the Greek language. Now the ancient Greeks have been claimed by Hellenists from the late 18th century onwards to be the founders of European civilization, all other peoples with an Indo-European linguistic heritage being excluded for some reason or another. In the description mankind's history, the absence or presence of the art of writing is even used for making the rather haphazard distinction between prehistory and history. So one can very well imagine why the island of Crete in offering hospitality to the first writing Greeks was proclaimed [...] the cradle of Europe." (Binsbergen, Black Athena Comes of Age, Pp. 102-3.).

London, Grant Richards, 1901. 8vo. Uncut in the orig. full red bloth w. gilt lettering to spine. Some wear to corners and capitals. (6), 139, (1), 16 ("A Catalogue of Books Published by Grant Richards) pp. First edition of Hobson's second work on the link between imperialism and international conflict, based on his experiences from South Africa immediately during the Second Boer War.John Atkinson Hobson (1858 - 1940) was an important English economist and imperial critic, widely popular for his abilities as a writer and lecturer. He studied at Derby School and at Oxford, and in 1887 he moved to London, right in the middle of the economic depression. It is here that he writes his "Physiology of Industry" together with his friend, the mountain climber and businessman A.F. Mummery, which propounded "the theory of underconsumption". Hobson's work was not well received by the academic economists, and ultimately he was pushed out of their circle.During the 1890'ies he published a number of notable works on capitalism, poverty and social reform, among which his famous "John Ruskin: Social Reformer" from 1898, in which he anticipated the marginal productivity theory of distribution and presented his critique of the classical theory of rent. Now, Hobson was asked by the editor of the "Manchester Guardian", C.P. Scott, to become their South-African correspondent, which proved to be a turning point in his personal as well as professional life. It is during this time that he develops the idea that modern capitalism is a direct cause of imperialism. As a correspondent, he covers part of the Second Boer war, and his condemnation of the conflict is very strong. It is this conflict that is the focus of the present work, in which he continues his quest to prove that international conflict and imperialism are directly connected. The ideas of the present work are elaborated further in what must be considered his main work, "Imperialism" from 1902. It is Hobson's theories on imperialism that have gained him the great international reputation that he carries to this day, and it is these theories that have influenced thinkers such as Trotsky, Lenin, etc.

Internally only occasional brownspotting. Overall nice and clean. Front free end-paper w. a beautiful 1/3 page original watercolour painting depicting "Burgtor in Rotenburg", dated "Hannover 26.4 1915." and signed "AZ fct." Frontispiece-engraving, (4), LXVI, 336, (1, -errata) pp. First edition of the important work which helped lay the foundation for German medieval scholarship and the acknowledgement of the importance, both historical and philological, of the contents that were to be found in the medieval folk songs and tales.Together with Eichendorff, Joseph Görres was the leading figure of Heidelberg romanticism and together with the compilations of Arnim, Brentano and the brothers Grimm, those of Görres brought the folk poetry back into life and turned it into a part of the public mind. The Burgtor so beautifully painted on the front free end-paper was built after the Castle at Rothenburg was destroyed in 1356 during an earthquake. The castle was built around 1142, and the first part of it was rebuilt as early as 1400. Throughout the 15th and the first half of the 16th century the rest of the Rothenburg Burgthor was finished; the history of this site thus coincides chronologically with the contents of the present volume.
