Worcester MA, The Heffernan Press, 1976. Royal8vo. In the original blue printed wrappers. In "The Bell Journal of Economics": Vol. 7, No. 2, Spring 1976. Entire volume offered. Very light wear to extremities otherwise a very fine and crisp copy (not ex-library). Pp. 426-448 [Entire volume: Pp. 359-736]. First printing of Goldberg important paper in which he was the first first to emphasise the incompleteness of long-term contracts and the key role of long-term contracts in establishing a process for adjusting the terms of the agreement to changing market conditions over time. The paper initiated together with Williamson's paper published the same year the new field of "transactions-cost economics".Here he "foresaw the essential similarity between the issues that arise in public utility regulation and the issues in administering a long-term contract: "In searching for a rationale for regulation we should look not at the shape of the long-run average cost curve, but instead at the complexities involved in devising and administering such a contract. Indeed, natural monopoly industries will be characterized in this paper not by their alleged decreasing average costs, but by the features which make long-term relationships between consumers and producers desirable and which further make it extremely difficult to determine at the outset the specific terms of that relationship."" Wien, Julius Springer, 1929. 8vo. Bound in a contemporary full cloth with black leather titel label with gilt lettering to front board. Ex-libris pasted on to pasted down front free end paper. A fine and clean copy. VI, 114 pp. First edition of Carnap's Abriss der Logistik which constitutes one of very first textbooks in modern logic, the influence of which was immense. The basic purpose of Carnap's publication is to make the logical system, from Russell and Whitehead's seminal work within mathematical logic, Principia Mathematica, available to a broader audience. "While published a year after Hilbert and Ackermann's more prominent Grundzüge der theoretischen Logik [1928], Carnap's Abriss - essentially finished in 1927, largely independant of Grundzüge, and circulated widely - also had significant influence, especially in Vienna, where Carnap taught at the time." (Creath, The Cambridge companion to Carnap. P. 181).Carnap himself wrote about Abriss: "In 1924 I wrote the first version of the later book, Abriss der Logistik . It was based on Principia. Its main purpose was to give not only a system of symbolic logic, but also to show its application for the analysis of concepts and the construction of deductive systems".Rudolf Carnap was an influential German philosopher who was active in Europe before 1935 and in the United States thereafter. He was a leading member of the Vienna Circle and a famous advocate of logical positivism.

Berlin, C. F. Himburg, 1790. 8vo. In contemporary marbled paper covered boards. A few annotations to pasted down front end-paper and stamp (Grevskabet Christiansholm) to pasted down front end-paper and front free end-paper. Wear to extremities and dampstain affecting upper margin on first few leaves, otherwise internally very nice and clean. (8), 364 pp. + frontispiece and 11 plates. Third edition of this first textbook of descriptive systematic botany and botanical Latin. It also contains Linnaeus's first published description of his binomial nomenclature. ‘Philosophia Botanica marks a developmental stage in Linnaeus's botanical philosophy, expanding upon concepts initially presented in his ‘Fundamenta Botanica’ (1736) and ‘Critica Botanica’ (1737). The book also establishes a basic botanical terminology. “Continuing his study on the classification of plants, Linnaeus published [the present work]. In this he attempted to organize a natural system based on structure, but this work was never completed” (Sparrow 135)“Linnaeus’ main mission was to complete his reform of botany. In the work produced during his stay in Holland he had established the principles, maintained more or less unchanged for the rest of his life, but they still had to be developed and put into practice. In 1751 he published Philosophies botanica, his most influential work but actually only an expanded version of Fundamenta botanica. In it Linnaeus dealt with the theory of botany, the laws and rules that the botanist must follow in order to describe and name the plants correctly and to combine them into higher systematic categories. At the same time he struggled with the enormous undertaking of cataloging all of the world’s plant and animal species and giving each its correct place in the system.” (DSB)

Stamp to front free end-paper and titlepage, otherwise fine and clean. pp.56-69. [Entire volume: VII, (1), 861 pp.]. First printing of Landau and Peierls's important paper in the development of quantum field theory. The present paper became seminal for Bohr and Rosenfeld's 1933 paper which is often credited with having laid the foundation for quantum electrodynamics. Landau and Peierls published a critical analysis of the consequences of such limitations in a relativistic quantum theory of fields (second paper offered). Landau and Peierls came to the negative conclusion that in several cases, the concept of momentum was without physical meaning and quantities such as the strength of a field was un-measurable.
