lyn59043
Chicago, Open Court, 1902. Small 8vo. Orig. full red cloth. Wear to topof spine. Old owners name on title-page. VII,143 pp., textfigs. Clean and fine. First English edition of Hilbert's "Grundlagen der Geometrie" from 1899, one of the most influential publications in 2oth Century mathematics. Throughout the 19th century geometry was developed far beyond our intuitive conception of space; hyperbolic geometry was discovered by Gauss, Bolyai, and Lobachevsky and elliptic geometry by Riemann. However, Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry still involved an intuitive idea about the concepts 'point', 'line', 'lies on', 'between', etc. In his 'Grundlagen' Hilbert set out to give a strictly formal formulation of geometry were points, lines, planes are nothing more than abstract symbols and concepts as 'lies on' are simply algebraic relations between these symbols. Through his method Hilbert could analyse independence and completeness of the axioms for geometry and he presented a new smaller set of axioms for Euclidean geometry. It can not be said that the 'Grundlagen' contains new and surprising discoveries, its importance lies in the great influence which Hilbert's method had on all fields of mathematics, and even other sciences as physics, chemistry, and biology. The 'Grundlagen' initiated a whole new paradigm shift and eventually evolved mathematics, throughout the 20th century, into a network of axiomatic formal systems.

Berlin, Springer, 1935. 8vo. In contemporary halv cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Zeitschrift für Physik", Bd. 95, 1936. Entire volume offered. Stamp to front free end-paper and titlepage, Extremities with light soiling. Pp. 752-62. [Entire volume: VIII, 818 pp.]. First appearance of this important paper which constitute the first description of the fundamental principles behind modern high power linear beam microwave electron tubes."They described a transit-time tube in which the three characteristic features; velocity modulation, phase focusing, and energy transfer were designed to occur in three separate regions, an arrangement which is also characteristic of a klystron. Further they demonstrated, in my opinion for the first time, that it is necessary, in order to achieve high RF power output, to use a linear electron beam, and that the beam must be positioned in such a way as to prevent the electrons from landing on RF electrodes - they must only be allowed to penetrate the fringe field of the RF electrodes, finally landing on a separate electrode, now called the collector. This arrangement made it possible to separate high frequency from beam guiding electrodes, thus permitting the use of high power electron beams" (Sarkar, History of Wireless). "which outlined the fundamental working principles of the klystron tube, a high power microwave oscillator, used to provide the transmitter power in the newly developed radar equipment. Leaving Arsenjeva in Russia, he later moved to the UK to continue development work on the klystron with Standard Telephones and Cables (STC), the UK arm of ITT. The day before England went to war with Germany Heil slipped out of the country returning to Germany to continue his work at Standard Electric Lorentz (SEL), ITT's German arm in Berlin. Heil's klystrons, known as "Heil's Generators", became key components in Germany's World War II radars.""After the war Heil's name appeared on an FBI list of Germans accused of war crimes. He was brought to the US by the military and worked at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Subsequently he formed his own company and carried out intensive research the physiology of the human ear and sound generation by small animals which he applied to the design of sound transducers. His 1973 patent for the Heil Air Motion Transformer (AMT) made him well known to HiFi buffs."

Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1950. 8vo. In the original red cloth, spine with gilt lettering. Dust jacket with miscolouring to spine and upper and lower capitals with a with tears. Ex-libris (Knud Lundbæk) pasted on to pasted down front end-paper. Inner front hindge split. Otherwise a good copy. XVII, (1), 607, (1) pp. First edition of Carnap’s important work on inductive logic which “led to a renaissance in the use of probability theory to model the inductive process” (Cambridge Companion to Carnap). He here turned his attention away from the more traditional deductive inferential frameworks on which he had so far primarily focused and towards the newer probabilistic and statistical frameworks now being constructed and applied with increasing frequency in the physical, biological, and social sciences. Rudolf Carnap (born 1891 in Ronsdorf, Germany, died 1970 in Santa Monica, California) was an immensely influential analytic philosopher, who has contributed decisively to the fields of logic, epistemology, semantics, philosophy of science, and philosophy of language. He was one of the leading figures of the Vienna Circle, and a prominent logical positivist. He studied philosophy, physics and mathematics at the universities of Berlin and Freiburg, and worked at the universities of Jena, Vienna and Prague until 1935, when he, due to the war, emigrated to the U.S., where he became an American citizen in 1941. In America he became professor of the University of Chicago.

(Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1857). Without wrappers. In "Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg. von J.C. Poggendorff", Bd. 102, No 12. Pp. 481-644 a. 1 folded engraved plate. (Entire issue offered). Kirchhoff's paper: pp. 529-545. Clean and fine. Firs appearance of Kirchhoff's first paper on conductivity in which he presents his Circuit-Law. The significance of this paper is that Kirchhoff proved with action at a distance that electric disturbances travel along wires of neglible resistance with the velocity of light. He accomplished this with the laws of Newtonian electrodynamics before Maxwell formulated his equations."The theory of variable currents raised more difficult problems. The law of dynamical interactions between currents had been formulated by Ampere (1826) in the spirit of the concept of action at a distance....The field was still open when Kirchhoff entered it in 1857 with his own general theory of the motion of electricity in conductors (in the paper offered). His first paper, in which he treated linear conductors from the same premises as Weber, turned out to coincide in all essentials with an investigation carried out by Weber shortly before but delayed in publication. Both physicists noticed a remarkable implication of their theory: in a perfectly conducting circuit, oscillating currents could be propagated with a constant velocity, independent of the nature of the conductors, and numerically equal to the velocity of light. Both Weber and Kirchhoff however, pointing to the extreme character of the condition of infinite conductivity, dismissed this result as a mere accidental coincidence."(DSB VII, p. 380-81).

Paris, Eugène Renduel, 1830. Beautiful cont. hcalf w. richly gilt back and gilt ornamental border on both boards. Printed on fine paper. Minor brownspotting, otherwise internally nice and clean. An excellent copy. Rare first edition. An early work by the renowned author, Paul Lacroix (1807-1884), who was famous for his several important historical works and his numerous works of bibliographical contents, regarding which he can be said to have continued the tradition of Nodier. He wrote a number of historical novels, which were very popular at the time, and of which Les Deux Fous is considered one of the best. They were reprinted numerous times, and were translated into several languages; -most of them deal with the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, a period not commonly investigated at that time. Most of his works are published under pseudonym, because of which he is now best known under the name of "Bibliophile Jacob". Aged 28 he was awarded the cross of the "Légion d'Honneur" for his work on the history of the 16th century, and 1842 he founded "L'Alliance des Arts" together with M. Thoré. Carteret 2;14. Not in Barbier.
