Paris, Huart, 1731. 8vo. Uniformly bound in two contemporary full calf bindings with four raised bands and richly gilt spines. Light wear to extremities. Boards with a few holes in the leather, showing the wooden boards underneath. Ex-libris pasted on to pasted down front end-papers. Small worm-tract in outer margin of last leaves in vol. 1, not affecting text. A nice set. XVI, 336, (16) pp.; (12), 331, (5) pp. First edition of Dupuy's comprehensive work on the mythological gods, demigods and most famous heroes of pagan antiquity. It offers detailed explanations of ancient fables and metamorphoses, arguing that the rituals, mysteries, sacrifices and other ceremonies of paganism are only imperfect imitations of sacred history. The book also includes a French translation of Dares Phrygius' account of the destruction of Troy, based on the Latin translation by Cornelius Nepos.

Berlin, Springer, 1935. 8vo. In contemporary halv cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Zeitschrift für Physik", Bd. 94, 1935. Entire volume offered. Stamp to front free end-paper. Fine and clean. Pp. 277-302. [Entire volume: VIII, 818 pp.]. First printing of Preisach seminal paper in which generalizes hysteresis loops as the parallel connection of independent relay hysterons - today known as the Preisach model of hysteresis. Hysteresis is the dependence of a system not only on its current environment but also on its past environment. This dependence arises because the system can be in more than one internal state. The Preisach Model is being used in such different branches of science as engineering, mechanics, biology and economics.

SAVART, FELIX. - THE RATIONALIZED VIOLIN AND THE PHYSICS OF THE VIOLIN.

(Paris, Crochard, 1820). No wrappers. In "Annales". In "Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago" Tome XIV, Juin issue, pp. 113-222. (Entire issue offered with halftitlepage to vol. 14). Savart's paper: pp. 113-172 and 3 folded engraved plates. Plates with some scattered brownspots. First printing of a pioneer paper on the acoustics of the violin and on the construction of the Trapezoidal Fiddle."In his earliest work Savart gave the first explanation of the function of certain parts of the violin. To learn how vibrations are transmitted from the strings to the rest of the instrument, he induced vibrations in a free wood plate by passing a vibrating string over a bridge at its center; he also used Chladni’s sand-pattern technique to observe the resulting nodal lines. Savart showed that the bridge transmits the string’s vibrations; that the plate can be made to vibrate at any frequency; and that the corresponding mode is a modification of an unforced mode. He demonstrated that the sound post also serves to transmit vibrations, and he explained that it therefore should not be placed under a nodal line. Thinking that symmetry and regularity would produce the best tone, Savart built a trapezoidal violin with rectangular sound holes. When the instrument was played before a committee that included Biot, the Composer Cherubini, and other members of the Academy of Sciences and the Académie des Beaux-Arts, its tone was judged as extremely clear and even, but somewhat subdued."(DSB).The issue also contains Eilhard Mitscherlich' famous paper in the first French version "Sur la Relation qui existe entre la forme cristalline et les proportions chimiques", pp. 172-190.

Halle, Niemeyer, 1929. 4to. Orig. full cloth w. gilt leather title-label to spine. A bit of minor brownspotting and sunning to front board; back board also a bit brownspotted. The two last leaves with a crease to lower margin, otherwise internally very nice and clean. XI, (1), 298 pp. First edition of Husserl's seminal work, which contains his philosophy of logic and mathematics. This important work entitled "Formal and Transcendental Logic" with the sub-title "An Attempted Critique of the Logic Reason" provides us with Husserl's final conception of logic. Though now famous as the father of phenomenology, Husserl was initially a student of mathematics, and in his two first works "Über den Begriff der Zahl" and "Philosophie der Aritmetik", his early philosophy is developed on the basis of mathematics with the aim to provide a sound foundation for mathematics by combining it with philosophy and psychology. His main work from 1900-1901, Logische Untersuchungen", probably one of the two most important and influential philosophical works of the 20th century, Husserl establishes a philosophy that asks the question of the essence of the matter of perception as opposed to the form of perception, as well as the meaning of the difference between formal or pure and material laws, truths and determinations, -all based on his strong interest in the relationship between the formalities of arithmetic and of logic. However, it is in his "Formal and Transcendental Logic" that Husserl most thoroughly introduces us to the formal character of logic and formulates his final conception of it. According to Husserl, logic is formal, because it is nothing more than the development of pure reason, and pure reason is a formal concept. As such, logic for Husserl becomes the self-interpretation of pure reason (die Selbstauslegung der reinen Vernunft) which is, again, a formal activity. Husserl also determines that there are two formal ways of conceiving logic, one being a tool for judging sentences true or false, and another, which includes knowledge. And so, this work not only provides us with a genetic-phenomenological investigation of philosophy and of the basis of logic, but it also provides us with an insight into the entire inner systematic structure of late Husserlian thought.

Forsøgene vidererfører Chladnis forskning over disse figurer, idet denne opdagede fænomenet sidst i 1700-tallet. Afhandlingen blev prisbelønnet af Videnskabernes Selskab med en sølvmedalje.

London, John Marray, 1922. 8vo. Uncut in the original green full cloth in the original dust jacket. Letter from Haldane to "Principal Rattray" pasted on the front free end paper: "12 Nov 1922 / Dear Principal Rattray, / MERE ". Author's presentation inscription to top of half title: "Principal Rattray / from the Author / In memory of her verses to the University / College of Leicester 11 feb 1922.". Corners and capitals a bit bumped. Dust jacket with wear and some loss at extremities, especially capitals and lower part of back jacket, no loss of text anywhere. Internally very nice and clean. XIV, 302, (4, -advertisements) pp. First edition of Haldane's important work with presentation inscription to Principal Rattray, published the year after his main and most famous work "The Reign of Relativity". In that work Haldane had propounded a theory that Einstein's theory supported the thesis that the distinction between knowledge and that which is known is a distinction within knowledge itself. "He therefore mistakenly treated Einstein's "observer" as if it were akin to Kant's "transcendental unity of apperception". "The Reign of Relativity", in consequence became a compendium of F.H. Bradley and Bernard Bosanquet, a defense of vitalism in biology continued in "The Philosophy of Humanism and other Subjects" (1922), and even a vindication of the general will. " (D.S.B. VI:26). Robert Fleming Rattray (1886-1967) became Pastor of the Great Meeting in Leicester in 1917. "He was a strong supporter of both the adult education movement and the Lit. and Phil. and of the scheme, promoted by the Society among other organisations, to establish a University in Leicester. In early 1921 he was approached to be the planned College's first Principal and in May 1921 he was appointed as the first Principal of the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland College (later University College, Leicester). Rattray joined the Lit. and Phil. on his arrival in Leicester in 1917. In 1920, already well-established as a teacher and writer on philosophy, his first major contribution to the Lit. and Phil. was to assist in the setting up of a new Philosophy Section in 1920, with Rattray as its first Chairman. In its first year, 1920-21 Rattray gave a course of six lectures on "Some Fundamental Problems of Philosophy and the following year he gave a second course of eight lectures on "modern" (i.e. not classical or medieval) philosophers, covering Descartes, Spinosa, Leibnitz, Locke, Berkeley, Hume and Kant. He remained at Leicester as Principal of the University College until 1931 when he moved to Cambridge to become Pastor of the Unitarian Memorial Chapel, and remained in Cambridge after his retirement through to his death at the age of 81." (Copenhagen, 1754). 4to. In recently blue paper covered card board binding with white paper-label title-label to front board. Previous owner's name to pasted down front end-paper. Ex-libris pasted on to verso of front free end-paper. Without wrappers as issued in "Videnskabernes Selskabs Skrifter", internally a nice and clean copy. Pp. 189-216. Uncommon first edition of Kraft’s work on the immortality of the Soul is part of his philosophical engagement with the materialist debates of the 18th century. Here Kraft argues against materialist conceptions of the soul, particularly those put forth by La Mettrie in his “L'Homme Machine”. Kraft disputes La Mettrie's claim that the connection between thought and the body implies a causal relationship. He acknowledges that rational beings have larger brains than irrational ones and that thought is influenced by bodily conditions, illnesses, and emotions. However, he maintains that these observations only demonstrate a connection, not causation. Kraft distinguishes between time and eternity, arguing that while the finite can never attain eternity, it can achieve an infinite time with a beginning but no end. He contrasts this with the permanence of the infinite. Jens Kraft (1720–1765) was a Dano-Norwegian mathematician and philosopher. He was born in Frederikshald in Norway. While still a student in Copenhagen, he was influenced by Christian Wolff, having attended one of Wolff’s lectures during a visit to Halle. Later he was appointed professor of philosophy at the Sorø Academy, where he responded to Baumgarten’s Metaphysica with his own work, Metaphysik. Both philosophers structured their works into four divisions: Cosmologie, Ontologie, Psykologie, and Naturlig Theologie.

Kiøbenhavn, Möller, 1774. 8vo. Uniformly bound in two nice contemporary half calf bindings with five raised bands and richly gilt spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. All edges coloured in red. A nice set. (32), 448 pp.; (16), 511, (1) pp. The uncommon first edition of Schønheyder’s educational work on Christianity. Johan Christian Schønheyder (1742 – 1803) was a Danish-Norwegian clergyman. He earned his theology degree in theology from the University of Copenhagen in 1760, at just 17 years old. After studying in Germany from 1765 to 1768 he accompanied Christian VII as a German travel chaplain on the king's grand tour to Germany, the Netherlands, Great Britain, and France. Schønheyder served as the court chaplain at Christiansborg from 1769 as the parish priest at Trinitatis Church in Copenhagen from 1771 to 1782, at Vor Frue Church also in Copenhagen, and as the dean (stiftsprost) of Zealand from 1782 to 1788, after which he became the bishop of the Diocese of Trondhjem until his death. He was the last bishop of the large diocese (which encompassed all of Norway north of Dovre) before it was divided after his death. Schønheyder had a strong interest in education of which this present work is a fine example.

Berlin, G. Reimer, 1844. 4to. In "Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik, 28 Band, 1 Heft, 1844". In the original printed wrappers, without backstrip. Fine and clean. [Eisenstein:] Pp. 28-35; Pp. 36-43; Pp. 44-48; Pp. 49-52; Pp. 53-67. [Entire issue: IV, 96, (2) pp. + 2 folded plates.]. First printing of six exceedingly influential papers by the German mathematics prodigy Eisenstein. Even though he died prematurely at the age of 29, he managed to prove biquadratic reciprocity, Quartic reciprocity (Presented in the present: "Lois de réciprocité"), Cubic reciprocity (Presented in the present: "Nachtrag zum cubischen Reciprocitätssatze..."), to be imprisoned by the Prussian army for revolutionary activities in Berlin and making Gauss state that: "There have been only three epoch-making mathematicians: Archimedes, Newton, and Eisenstein". Alexander von Humboldt, then 83, accompanied Eisenstein's remains to the cemetery. The papers presented in the present issue is among his most prominent and made him famous throughout the mathematical world. (James, Driven to innovate, P. 88). "The twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth volumes of Crelle's Journal, published in 1844, contained twenty-five contributions by Eisenstein. These testimonials to his almost unbelievable, explosively dynamic productivity rocketed him to fame throughout the mathematical world. They dealt primarily with quadratic and cubic forms, the reciprocity theorem for cubic residues, fundamental theorems for quadratic and biquadratic residues, cyclotomy and forms of the third degree, plus some notes on elliptic and Abelian transcendentals. Gauss, to whom he had sent some of his writings, praised them very highly and looked forward with pleasure to an announced visit. In June 1844, carrying a glowing letter of recommendation from Humboldt, Eisenstein went off to see Gauss. He stayed in Göttingen fourteen days. In the course of the visit he won the high respect of the "prince of mathematicians," whom he had revered all his life. The sojourn in Göttingen was important to Eisenstein for another reason: he became friends with Moritz A. Stern-the only lasting friendship he ever made. While the two were in continual correspondence on scientific matters, even Stern proved unable to dispel the melancholy that increasingly held Eisenstein in its grip. Even the sensational recognition that came to him while he was still only a third-semester student failed to brighten Eisenstein's spirits more than fleetingly. In February 1845, at the instance of Ernst E. Kummer, who was acting on a suggestion from Jacobi (possibly inspired by Humboldt), Eisenstein was awarded an honorary doctorate in philosophy by the School of Philosophy of the University of Breslau.Eisenstein soon became the subject of legend, and the early literature about him is full of errors. His treatises were written at a time when only Gauss, Cauchy, and Dirichlet had any conception of what a completely rigorous mathematical proof was. Even a man like Jacobi often admitted that his own work sometimes lacked the necessary rigor and self-evidence of methods and proofs." (DSB)

Neither Sweden nor Denmark-Norway had wanted war to begin with but once pushed into it through their respective alliances, Sweden made a bid to acquire Norway by way of invasion while Denmark-Norway made ill-fated attempts to reconquer territories lost to Sweden in the 17th century. Peace was finally concluded on grounds of status quo ante bellum with the Treaty of Jönköping on 10 December 1809.
