Kiøbenhavn, Möller, 1774. 8vo. Uniformly bound in two nice contemporary half calf bindings with five raised bands and richly gilt spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. All edges coloured in red. A nice set. (32), 448 pp.; (16), 511, (1) pp. The uncommon first edition of Schønheyder’s educational work on Christianity. Johan Christian Schønheyder (1742 – 1803) was a Danish-Norwegian clergyman. He earned his theology degree in theology from the University of Copenhagen in 1760, at just 17 years old. After studying in Germany from 1765 to 1768 he accompanied Christian VII as a German travel chaplain on the king's grand tour to Germany, the Netherlands, Great Britain, and France. Schønheyder served as the court chaplain at Christiansborg from 1769 as the parish priest at Trinitatis Church in Copenhagen from 1771 to 1782, at Vor Frue Church also in Copenhagen, and as the dean (stiftsprost) of Zealand from 1782 to 1788, after which he became the bishop of the Diocese of Trondhjem until his death. He was the last bishop of the large diocese (which encompassed all of Norway north of Dovre) before it was divided after his death. Schønheyder had a strong interest in education of which this present work is a fine example.

Frankfurt a. M., 1817. 8vo. Cont. (orig.?) light blue paper binding w. gilt red title-label to spine. Spine worn w. lack of paper, but cardboard not worn through. Internally only occasional brownspotting. Overall nice and clean. Front free end-paper w. a beautiful 1/3 page original watercolour painting depicting "Burgtor in Rotenburg", dated "Hannover 26.4 1915." and signed "AZ fct." Frontispiece-engraving, (4), LXVI, 336, (1, -errata) pp. First edition of the important work which helped lay the foundation for German medieval scholarship and the acknowledgement of the importance, both historical and philological, of the contents that were to be found in the medieval folk songs and tales.Together with Eichendorff, Joseph Görres was the leading figure of Heidelberg romanticism and together with the compilations of Arnim, Brentano and the brothers Grimm, those of Görres brought the folk poetry back into life and turned it into a part of the public mind. The Burgtor so beautifully painted on the front free end-paper was built after the Castle at Rothenburg was destroyed in 1356 during an earthquake. The castle was built around 1142, and the first part of it was rebuilt as early as 1400. Throughout the 15th and the first half of the 16th century the rest of the Rothenburg Burgthor was finished; the history of this site thus coincides chronologically with the contents of the present volume.

New York, Norton & Company, 1952. 8vo. In the original full black cloth with gilt lettering to spine in the original dust jacket. Previous owner's name on front free end-paper (The economist Simon Kuznets) Gilt lettering with a bit of wear and capitals on dust jacket with wear. Otherwise a very fine and clean copy. First printing - and Simon Kuznets copy - of Rostow's famous work in which Rostow, probably for the first time, introduced an analytical tool and framework to analyze growth and progress in historical and contemporary economics. Rostow states in the preface that: "I should like to acknowledge valuable exchanges with [...] S. S. Kuznets" (Preface, p. IX).Rostow's work is to a large extent a response to Marx's stages (of feudalism, capitalism, socialism, and communism). Rostow's categorized economic growth and development in four stages: 1.The traditional society; 2.The pre-condition for take off; 3.The drive to maturity; 4.The age of high mass consumption. "Rostow's exposition has received very wide attention and approval, perhaps for several reasons. First, it is evolutionary; second, it is grounded in historical studies; third, it seems to show a predestined affluence for all; finally, it presents a case for an inner logic and drive from one stage to the next that requires no conscious decision-making or deliberate efforts to promote growth; it is analytic without being programmatic." (Ibid.).Walt Whitman Rostow (1916-2003) had a prominent role in the shaping of US foreign policy in Southeast Asia during the 1960s, he was a staunch anti-communist, and was noted for a belief in the efficacy of capitalism and free enterprise. Rostow served as a major adviser on national security affairs under the Kennedy and Johnson administrations..In 1960 Rostow published the book "The Stages of Economic Growth: A non-communist manifesto", in which he elaborated the ideas presented in the present book. Simon Smith Kuznets (1901 - 1985) Russian American economist was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for "his empirically founded interpretation of economic growth which has led to new and deepened insight into the economic and social structure and process of development".Kuznets revolutionized econometrics with the important book "National Income and Its Composition, 1919-1938. Published in 1941 which eventually formed the famous Kuznets Curve. This work relied to a large extent on Bowley's work on national income.

(Copenhagen, 1754). 4to. In recently blue paper covered card board binding with white paper-label title-label to front board. Previous owner's name to pasted down front end-paper. Ex-libris pasted on to verso of front free end-paper. Without wrappers as issued in "Videnskabernes Selskabs Skrifter", internally a nice and clean copy. Pp. 189-216. Uncommon first edition of Kraft’s work on the immortality of the Soul is part of his philosophical engagement with the materialist debates of the 18th century. Here Kraft argues against materialist conceptions of the soul, particularly those put forth by La Mettrie in his “L'Homme Machine”. Kraft disputes La Mettrie's claim that the connection between thought and the body implies a causal relationship. He acknowledges that rational beings have larger brains than irrational ones and that thought is influenced by bodily conditions, illnesses, and emotions. However, he maintains that these observations only demonstrate a connection, not causation. Kraft distinguishes between time and eternity, arguing that while the finite can never attain eternity, it can achieve an infinite time with a beginning but no end. He contrasts this with the permanence of the infinite. Jens Kraft (1720–1765) was a Dano-Norwegian mathematician and philosopher. He was born in Frederikshald in Norway. While still a student in Copenhagen, he was influenced by Christian Wolff, having attended one of Wolff’s lectures during a visit to Halle. Later he was appointed professor of philosophy at the Sorø Academy, where he responded to Baumgarten’s Metaphysica with his own work, Metaphysik. Both philosophers structured their works into four divisions: Cosmologie, Ontologie, Psykologie, and Naturlig Theologie.

London, Grant Richards, 1901. 8vo. Uncut in the orig. full red bloth w. gilt lettering to spine. Some wear to corners and capitals. (6), 139, (1), 16 ("A Catalogue of Books Published by Grant Richards) pp. First edition of Hobson's second work on the link between imperialism and international conflict, based on his experiences from South Africa immediately during the Second Boer War.John Atkinson Hobson (1858 - 1940) was an important English economist and imperial critic, widely popular for his abilities as a writer and lecturer. He studied at Derby School and at Oxford, and in 1887 he moved to London, right in the middle of the economic depression. It is here that he writes his "Physiology of Industry" together with his friend, the mountain climber and businessman A.F. Mummery, which propounded "the theory of underconsumption". Hobson's work was not well received by the academic economists, and ultimately he was pushed out of their circle.During the 1890'ies he published a number of notable works on capitalism, poverty and social reform, among which his famous "John Ruskin: Social Reformer" from 1898, in which he anticipated the marginal productivity theory of distribution and presented his critique of the classical theory of rent. Now, Hobson was asked by the editor of the "Manchester Guardian", C.P. Scott, to become their South-African correspondent, which proved to be a turning point in his personal as well as professional life. It is during this time that he develops the idea that modern capitalism is a direct cause of imperialism. As a correspondent, he covers part of the Second Boer war, and his condemnation of the conflict is very strong. It is this conflict that is the focus of the present work, in which he continues his quest to prove that international conflict and imperialism are directly connected. The ideas of the present work are elaborated further in what must be considered his main work, "Imperialism" from 1902. It is Hobson's theories on imperialism that have gained him the great international reputation that he carries to this day, and it is these theories that have influenced thinkers such as Trotsky, Lenin, etc.

EISENSTEIN, G. [GOTTHOLD].

Berlin, G. Reimer, 1844. 4to. In "Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik, 28 Band, 1 Heft, 1844". In the original printed wrappers, without backstrip. Fine and clean. [Eisenstein:] Pp. 28-35; Pp. 36-43; Pp. 44-48; Pp. 49-52; Pp. 53-67. [Entire issue: IV, 96, (2) pp. + 2 folded plates.]. First printing of six exceedingly influential papers by the German mathematics prodigy Eisenstein. Even though he died prematurely at the age of 29, he managed to prove biquadratic reciprocity, Quartic reciprocity (Presented in the present: "Lois de réciprocité"), Cubic reciprocity (Presented in the present: "Nachtrag zum cubischen Reciprocitätssatze..."), to be imprisoned by the Prussian army for revolutionary activities in Berlin and making Gauss state that: "There have been only three epoch-making mathematicians: Archimedes, Newton, and Eisenstein". Alexander von Humboldt, then 83, accompanied Eisenstein's remains to the cemetery. The papers presented in the present issue is among his most prominent and made him famous throughout the mathematical world. (James, Driven to innovate, P. 88). "The twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth volumes of Crelle's Journal, published in 1844, contained twenty-five contributions by Eisenstein. These testimonials to his almost unbelievable, explosively dynamic productivity rocketed him to fame throughout the mathematical world. They dealt primarily with quadratic and cubic forms, the reciprocity theorem for cubic residues, fundamental theorems for quadratic and biquadratic residues, cyclotomy and forms of the third degree, plus some notes on elliptic and Abelian transcendentals. Gauss, to whom he had sent some of his writings, praised them very highly and looked forward with pleasure to an announced visit. In June 1844, carrying a glowing letter of recommendation from Humboldt, Eisenstein went off to see Gauss. He stayed in Göttingen fourteen days. In the course of the visit he won the high respect of the "prince of mathematicians," whom he had revered all his life. The sojourn in Göttingen was important to Eisenstein for another reason: he became friends with Moritz A. Stern-the only lasting friendship he ever made. While the two were in continual correspondence on scientific matters, even Stern proved unable to dispel the melancholy that increasingly held Eisenstein in its grip. Even the sensational recognition that came to him while he was still only a third-semester student failed to brighten Eisenstein's spirits more than fleetingly. In February 1845, at the instance of Ernst E. Kummer, who was acting on a suggestion from Jacobi (possibly inspired by Humboldt), Eisenstein was awarded an honorary doctorate in philosophy by the School of Philosophy of the University of Breslau.Eisenstein soon became the subject of legend, and the early literature about him is full of errors. His treatises were written at a time when only Gauss, Cauchy, and Dirichlet had any conception of what a completely rigorous mathematical proof was. Even a man like Jacobi often admitted that his own work sometimes lacked the necessary rigor and self-evidence of methods and proofs." (DSB)

Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1834. 8vo. Contemp. hcalf. Spine gilt and with gilt lettering. Spine slightly rubbed. In: "Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg.von Poggendorff", Bd. 32 (= 2. Reihe, Bd. 2). VIII,666 pp. a. 5 folded lithographed plates. (Entire volume offered). Faraday's paper: pp. 401-453 a. 1 lithographed plate. Stamp to verso of titlepage and verso of plates. Clean and fine, printed on good paper. First appearance in German - prepared by Faraday himself for publication in Annalen - of an importent historical paper in chemistry and physics in which Faraday reexamines some of his earlier views on electro-chemical decomposition and critizises in detail the theories of Grotthuss, Davy, Riffault and Chompré, Biot, De la Rive and Hachette. Here Faraday's give coins the names, still in use, for several electrical phenomena."For his next series of researches (the paper offered), Faraday reverted to subjects which had been among the first to attract him as an apprentice attending Davy's lectures; the voltaic pile, and the relation of electricity to chemistry......To test the doctrine (of Davy and De La Rive) of the influence of terminals, Faraday moistened a piece of paper in a saline solution, and supported it in the air on wax, so as to occupy part of the interval between two needle points which were connected with an electric machine...under these circumstances it was found thet the salt underwent decomposition......Since in this case no metallic terminals of any kind were in contact with the solution it was evident that all hypotheses which attributed decomposition to the action of the terminals were untenable...many of the perplexities which had harassed the older theories were at once removed when the phenomena were regarded from Faraday's point of view."(Whittaker)."Faraday's paper, 'on electrochemical decompositions, is mostly a review and criticism of earlier theories of electrolysis and the statement of his own theory tat: 'electr-chemical decomposition does not depend upon any direct attraction and repulsion of the poles (meaning thereby the metallic terminations either of the voltaic battery, or ordinary electrical machine arrangements).' Decomposition occurs on pieces of paper not directly connected with the poles of an electrical machine, the silent discharge passing throug the air." (Partington IV:p. 115).From 1831 to 1852 Michael Faraday published his "Experimental Researches in Electricity" in The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. These papers contain not only an impressive series of experimental discoveries, but also a collection of heterodox theoretical concepts on the nature of these phenomena expressed in terms of lines of forces and fields. He published 30 papers in all under this general title. They represents Faraday's most importent work, are classics in both chemistry and physics and are the experimental foundations for Maxwell's electro-magnetic theory of light, using Faraday's concepts of lines of force or tubes of magnetic and electrical forces. His many experiments on the effects of electricity and magnetism presented in these papers lead to the fundamental discoveries of 'induced electricity' (the Farday current), the electronic state of matter, the identity of electricity from different sources, equivalents in electro-chemical decomposition, electrostatic induction, hydro-electricity, diamagnetism, relation of gravity to electricity, atmospheric magnetism and many other."Among experimental philosophers Faraday holds by universal consent the foremost place. The memoirs in which his discoveries are enshrined will never ceaseto be read with admiration and delight; and future generations will preserve with an affection not less enduring the personal records and familiar letters, which recall the memory of his humble and unselfish spirit."(Edmund Whittaker in A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity).
