Its Resultate aus den Beobachtungen des magnetischen Vereins appeared in six volumes (1836–1841) and included fifteen papers by Gauss, twenty-three by Weber, and the joint Atlas des Erdmagnetismus (1840). These and other publications elsewhere dealt with problems of instrumentation (including one of several inventions of the bifilar magnetometer), reported observations of the horizontal and vertical components of magnetic force, and attempted to explain the observations in mathematical terms." Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1855. Without wrappes. In: "Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg. von J.C. Poggendorff", 94. Bd., No 1 ("Heft" No 1, 1855). Pp. 1-176 a. 4 folded engraved plates. (Entire issue offered). Titlepage to vol. 94 (small stamp on verso). Fick's paper: pp. 59-86. Helmholtz's paper: pp. 1-28. Clean and fine. First appearance of Fick's importent paper in molecular physics in which he annouced his two laws of diffusion.Fick's first law relates the diffusive flux to the concentration field, by postulating that the flux goes from regions of high oncentration to regions of low concentration, with a magnitude that is proportional to the concentration gradient (spatial derivative). - Fick's second law predicts how diffusion causes the concentration field to change with time. (Wikipedia).First appearance of HELMHOLTZ'S fundamental paper in physiological optics in which he examined the sensitivity of the eye for the individual elements of the violet end of the spectrum; he was able to detect a whole series of distinct tones of purple: he alters the name 'invisible rays' to that of 'ultra-violet rays'; discussion of the relations of the wavelenghts of complementary colours and the intensity required if the mixture of simple complementarity colours is to produce white. He answered these questions quantatively. "THE TREATISE (the paper offered), WHICH HAS BEEN FUNDAMENTAL FOR ALL LATER WORK OF THE SAME KIND, concludes with an inquiry into the validity of Newton's Colour Circle, which Helmholtz designates as one of the most brilliant inspirations of that great thinker."(Leo Koenigsberge "Hermann von Helmholtz" pp. 131-133).

JOHANNSEN, W. (WILHELM). - INTRODUCING "PURE LINES" IN GENETICS.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn44335
Jena, Gustav Fischer, 1903. Lex8vo. Fine contemp. hcloth., spine gilt and with gilt lettering. (6),68 pp., textfigs. Internally clean and fine. First edition of a groundbreaking work in genetics in which Johannsen introduces the concept of "pure line". Johannsen's work is dedicated to Francis Galton, "the creator of the exact science of heredity". Johannsen was the first to attribute to mutation the origin of the small differences in the continous kind of variability characteristic of normal heredity."Yet Johannsen had shown that Galton's "law of regression" was wrong when applied as Galton had done - to impure or mixed populations. He proved that selection was ineffective - that is, regression to parental averages was complete - only in the offspring derived by self-fertilization from a single parent, as in peas, beans, and other "selfers." The offspings and descendants from such a plant Johannsen referred to as a "pure line". His theory was that offspring of a pure line were genetically identical and that fluctuating variability among such offspring was due to effects of change and enviromental factors. These effects were not heritable and hence were not subject to the action of selection, either natural or artificial."(DSB VII, p. 114).Garrison & Morton No. 242.

lyn40476
(Berlin, Haude et Spener, 1754). 4to. Without wrappers as extracted from "Mémoires de L'Academie Royale des Sciences et belles Lettres", Tome VIII, pp. 262-282. First printing of Eulers's importent paper in which he defended the wave-theory of light in opposition to the newtonian corpuscular hypothesis. Most of the scientists and philosophers of the 18th century defended the corpuscular theory of light, but Euler "being impressed by the notion that the emission of particles would cause a diminuation in the mass of the radiating body, which was not observed, while the emission of waves involved no such consequence...he insisted strongly on the resamblance between light and sound; the whole of the space through which the heavenly bodies move is filled with a subtle matter, the aether, and light consists in vibrations of this aether; 'light is the same thing as sound in air'....The chief novelty of Euler's writings on light is his explanation of the manner in which material bodies appear coloured when wieved with white light; and, in particular the way in which colours of thin plates are produced." (Whittaker,A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity: pp. 97-98.). - Euler's worg comes here together with a paper by L'Abbe Mazeas on "Observations sur les Coleurs engendres par le Frottement des Surfaces plane et transparentes.". - Enestrom E:209.
