(Berlin, Haude et Spener, 1754). 4to. Without wrappers as extracted from "Mémoires de L'Academie Royale des Sciences et belles Lettres", Tome VIII, pp. 262-282. First printing of Eulers's importent paper in which he defended the wave-theory of light in opposition to the newtonian corpuscular hypothesis. Most of the scientists and philosophers of the 18th century defended the corpuscular theory of light, but Euler "being impressed by the notion that the emission of particles would cause a diminuation in the mass of the radiating body, which was not observed, while the emission of waves involved no such consequence...he insisted strongly on the resamblance between light and sound; the whole of the space through which the heavenly bodies move is filled with a subtle matter, the aether, and light consists in vibrations of this aether; 'light is the same thing as sound in air'....The chief novelty of Euler's writings on light is his explanation of the manner in which material bodies appear coloured when wieved with white light; and, in particular the way in which colours of thin plates are produced." (Whittaker,A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity: pp. 97-98.). - Euler's worg comes here together with a paper by L'Abbe Mazeas on "Observations sur les Coleurs engendres par le Frottement des Surfaces plane et transparentes.". - Enestrom E:209.

(New York), American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1950. 8vo. Volume XXIX, July, No. 3, 1950 of "The Bell System Technical Journal". In the original printed blue wrappers. A bit of minor browning to extremities. Wrapper only attached to back hinge. Internally fine and clean. Pp. 343-359. [Entire issue: Pp. 295-468]. First edition of Shannon's influential paper on how to construct a telephone exchange network. "The problem of designing a good rearrangeable network was (probably first) considered in a paper of C. E. Shannon investigating memory requirements in a telephone exchange. On the networks that he considered he imposed the realistic "separate memory condition" to the effect that in operation a separate part of the memory can be signed to each call on progress. This means that completion of a new call or termination of an old call will not disturb the state of memory elements associated with any call in progress. [...] Shannon's separate memory condition is actually met by modern connecting networks [...]. (Benes, Vaclav Edward. Mathematical Theory of Connecting Networks and Telephone Traffic: 017, 1965, p. 119.) Claude Shannon is widely regarded as being the father of information theory and cryptography. Berlin, Springer, 1935. 8vo. In contemporary halv cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Zeitschrift für Physik", Bd. 95, 1936. Entire volume offered. Stamp to front free end-paper. Fine and clean. Pp. 752-62. [Entire volume: VIII, 818 pp.]. First appearance of this important paper which constitute the first description of the fundamental principles behind modern high power linear beam microwave electron tubes."They described a transit-time tube in which the three characteristic features; velocity modulation, phase focusing, and energy transfer were designed to occur in three separate regions, an arrangement which is also characteristic of a klystron. Further they demonstrated, in my opinion for the first time, that it is necessary, in order to achieve high RF power output, to use a linear electron beam, and that the beam must be positioned in such a way as to prevent the electrons from landing on RF electrodes - they must only be allowed to penetrate the fringe field of the RF electrodes, finally landing on a separate electrode, now called the collector. This arrangement made it possible to separate high frequency from beam guiding electrodes, thus permitting the use of high power electron beams" (Sarkar, History of Wireless). "which outlined the fundamental working principles of the klystron tube, a high power microwave oscillator, used to provide the transmitter power in the newly developed radar equipment. Leaving Arsenjeva in Russia, he later moved to the UK to continue development work on the klystron with Standard Telephones and Cables (STC), the UK arm of ITT. The day before England went to war with Germany Heil slipped out of the country returning to Germany to continue his work at Standard Electric Lorentz (SEL), ITT's German arm in Berlin. Heil's klystrons, known as "Heil's Generators", became key components in Germany's World War II radars.""After the war Heil's name appeared on an FBI list of Germans accused of war crimes. He was brought to the US by the military and worked at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Subsequently he formed his own company and carried out intensive research the physiology of the human ear and sound generation by small animals which he applied to the design of sound transducers. His 1973 patent for the Heil Air Motion Transformer (AMT) made him well known to HiFi buffs."

WEIZSÄCKER, CARL FRIEDRICH VON.

Berlin, Springer, 1935. 8vo. Bound in contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering, In "Zeitschrift für Physik", Band 96, 1935. Entire issue offered. Stamp to front free end-paper. Fine and clean. Pp. 431-458. [Entire volume :VIII, 801 pp]. First printing of Weizsäcker's exceedingly important paper containing the first appearance of Bethe-Weizsäcker formula, or Semi-Empirical Mass Formula (SEMF), a theoretical formula relating the curve of nuclear binding energy, nuclear masses, and certain other nuclear properties. In nuclear physics, the semi-empirical mass formula (SEMF) (sometimes also called Weizsäcker's formula, the Bethe-Weizsäcker formula, or the Bethe-Weizsäcker mass formula to distinguish it from the Bethe-Weizsäcker process) is used to approximate the mass and various other properties of an atomic nucleus. As the name suggests, it is based partly on theory and partly on empirical measurements. The theory is based on the liquid drop model proposed by George Gamow, which can account for most of the terms in the formula and gives rough estimates for the values of the coefficients. Although refinements have been made to the coefficients over the years, the structure of the formula remains the same today. The present volume also contain conttributions by Wener Heisenberg: Die Struktur der leichten Atomkerne.

New York, American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1957. 8vo. Volume 36, 1957 of "The Bell System Technical Journal". In the original printed blue wrappers. Sunning to spine, and very minor spotting to wrappers. Internally near mint. 348 pp. First edition of the first technical description of the TAT-1, the first submarine transatlantic telephone cable system. The 2,240-mile cable was laid by the cableship Monarch and ran from Gallanach Bay, near Oban in Argyll, to Clarenville, Canada."The papers that follow describe the design, manufacture and installation of the first transatlantic telephone cable system with all its component parts, including the connection microwave radio-relay system in Nova Scotia." (From the introduction to the present volume)."Years of development led up to 1956 when the first transatlantic telephone cable system started carrying calls; this is an interesting story in itself. Two coaxial cables about 20 miles apart carried 36 two-way circuits. Nearly 50 sophisticated repeaters were spaced from 10 to 40 miles along the way. Each vacuum tube repeater contained 5,000 parts and cost almost $100,000." (Petruzzellis, Thomas. Telephone Projects for the Evil Genius, 2008, p. 4). The electronic repeaters, the devices that held together the many separate cables, were designed by the Bell Telephone Laboratories. In terms of reliable operation, the most critical component of the system was the repeater. These devices, spaced at intervals of 37.5 nautical miles along the cable, compensated for loss. The repeaters were of a unique flexible design, which allowed them to be handled in the same manner as cable.TAT-1 carried the Moscow-Washington hotline between the American and Soviet heads of state.Other papers of interest contained in the present volume:1. Kiøbenhavn, (1740). 4to. In contemporary full calf with four raised bands. Wear to extremities, leather on spine cracked, tear to upper compartment. Leather on edges of boards split, boards with scratches. Inner hinges split. First and last leaves with marginal browning, but internally generally nice and clean. Complete with all 52 issues in both part 1 and 2. The rare first Danish translation of the very popular "Then swänska Argus" (1732–34), modeled on Joseph Addison’s Tatler and Spectator. This periodical helped introduce the ideas of the Enlightenment into Sweden, but its language and literary style were of even greater importance; it is regarded as ushering in the age of modern Swedish prose. This present Danish translation exerted some influence both on Riis’s Danske Spectator and on Holberg, who mentions it in the preface to Moralske Tanker.
