Frankfurt & Leipzig, Renger, 1730. 4to. In contemporary full calf with five raised bands and richly gilt spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Light wear to extremities. Small wormtract to lower margin, not affecting text. A nice and clean copy. (16), 696, (16) pp. + 2 plates. Early Latin edition, one of Wolff's main works, in which he explains the Principle of Non-Contradiction and the Principle of Sufficient Reason. Wolff aims to derive the propositions applicable to all conceivable objects from well-defined concepts and fundamental axioms. “Christian Wolff (1679–1754) was a philosopher, mathematician, and scientist of the German Enlightenment. He is widely and rightly regarded as the most important and influential German philosopher between Leibniz and Kant. His scholarly output was prolific, numbering more than 50 (most multi-volume) titles, in addition to dozens of shorter essays and prefaces and nearly 500 book reviews. Through his series of textbooks, published first in German and then in Latin, Wolff made signal contributions to nearly every area of philosophical investigation of his time, including but not limited to logic, metaphysics, ethics, political philosophy, and aesthetics. Wolff is perhaps best known in his role as (co-)founder of the “Leibnizian-Wolffian philosophy”, and while Wolff himself rejected the term, the philosophical system it designates quickly gained broad, if not universal, acceptance within German universities in the first half of the eighteenth century.” (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy).

Kiøbenhavn, Popp, 1796. 8vo. In contemporary half calf with gilt lettering to spine. Light wear to extremities. Internally with light occassional browning, but generally a good copy. (6), 730 pp. Rare first edition of Hornemann’s pioneering treatise on Danish economic botany - the earliest systematic attempt to classify native Danish plants based on their practical use in agriculture, horticulture, and industry. Issued as the result of a prize essay competition held by the newly founded Naturhistorieselskab (Natural History Society), the work marked a turning point in the practical application of botanical knowledge in Denmark. Jens Wilken Hornemann (1770–1841) later became one of Denmark’s most influential botanists. Trained under Martin Vahl at the University of Copenhagen and the Naturhistorieselskab he was appointed lecturer at the Botanical Garden in 1801, and succeeded Vahl as editor of Flora Danica in 1804. Hornemann's Plantelære remained the principal Danish handbook of economic botany until Johan Lange’s mid-century publications. As such, it played a foundational role in the systematization and dissemination of applied botanical knowledge in Denmark during the Enlightenment and early 19th century.

Berlin, Springer, 1926. 8vo. Bound in contemporary half cloth. In "Zeitschrift für Physik", Bd. 39. Entire volume offered. Stamp to front free end paper. Fine and clean. Pp. 499-518. [Entire volume: IV, 948 pp]. First edition of this important paper in which Heisenberg - after inventing Quantum Mechanics the year before (1925) - investigates some of the fundamental aspects of the new theory. Heisenberg recognizes the invariance of the wave equation with respect to various transformations. "It is clear that such invariance exists with respect to an interchange of the coordinates of identical particles, e.g. of two electrons in an atom of two nuclei of the same kind in a molecule. As a consequence, the wave function of a non-degenerate stationary state must either remain unchanged or may only change sign when the transformation is applied to it....Indeed, in this way Pauli's exclusion principle for electrons found a formulation in terms of wave mechanics."(K. Kronik in Memorial Volume to Wolfgang Pauli).Cassidy 1926e
