MAIMAN, T. A.

lyn59908
London, Macmillan, 1960. Royal8vo. Bound in contemporary half cloth with with lettering to spine. In "Nature", Vol. 187, 1960. Entire volume offered. Stamp to verso of front board and title-page, otherwise fine and clean. Pp. 493-4. [Entire volume: XCI, 1140 pp.]. First printing of this fundamental paper in the history of the laser, which described the first operating laser. The paper "might be considered the most important per word of any of the wonderful papers in Nature over the past century" (Garwin. A century of Nature. P. 107)."Maiman made the first laser operate on 16 may 1960 at the Hughes Research Laboratory in California, by shining a high-power flash lamp on a ruby rod with silver-coated surfaces. He promptly submitted a short report on the work (Stimulated Optical Radiation in Ruby) to the journal Physical Review Letters, but the editors turned it down." (Ibid.). Maiman turned to Nature where the paper was better received and published on 6 August. It was turned down by Physical Review Letters because Maiman in June 1960 had submitted a paper with a similar topic (Optical and Microwave-Optical Experiments in Ruby). "While lasers quickly caught the public imagination, perhaps for their similarity to the 'heat rays' of science fiction, practical applications took years to develop. A young physicist named Irnee D'Haenens, while working with Maiman on the ruby laser, joked that the device was 'a solution looking for a problem,' and the line lingered in the laser community for many years" (Britannica). The development of the laser was essentially built upon the insights discovered by Albert Einstein in 1917 in his "Zur Quantentheorie der Strahlung". Einstein had shown theoretically that stimulated emission of electromagnetic radiation, a re-derivation of Max Planck's law of radiation, would make an atom or molecule to fall to a lower energy state and emit more waves. The development of the laser is not only of seminal importance in itself, it is also a testament to a period in which many of the achievements within theoretical physics reached in the early part of the 20th century went from being theoretical to applied. London, Printed by J.F. for Job. Williams and are to be sold by Richard Davis, 1669. Folio (315 x 205). In contemporary full calf. Light wear to extremities, boards with scratches. Small paper label pasted on to top of spine. Small stain to title-page but internally generally fine and clean. (8), 398 pp. Third expanded edition of Pearson’s highly influential ‘Exposition of the Creed. First published in 1659 it remained on the the most influential works on the Apostles’ Creed in the Anglican Church throughout the 17th century. Pearson dedicated his work to his parishioners of St. Clement's, Eastcheap, where he had previously preached the essence of the work several years earlier. Regarding the Christian cross, he explained in his commentary on the Apostles' Creed that the Greek term stauros initially meant "a straight standing Stake, Pale, or Palisador," but when additional transverse or prominent parts were added to form a perfect Cross, it still retained its original name. He asserted that "The Form then of the Cross on which our Saviour suffered was not a simple, but a compounded, Figure, according to the Custom of the Romans, by whose Procurator he was condemned to die. In which there was not only a straight and erected piece of Wood fixed in the Earth, but also a transverse Beam fastened unto that towards the top thereof."

Missing leather on upper compartment on spine, front board partly detached. Previous owner's name to title-page in contemporary hand. Light marginal browning throughout. (6), 442 pp. First edition of Michaelis’ work on Jeremiah and lamentation with commentaries on each chapter of the books with Latin, Greek, and Hebrew texts. In 1753, he had come up with the idea for the the Royal Danish Arabia Expedition (1761-1767) and had gotten the Danish minister Bernstoff to agree to it. In 1760, when the expedition was becoming a reality, Michaelis recommended Niebuhr as a participant, and he outlined the entire purpose of the trip - namaly the list of 100 questions that he prepared and published for the members of the expedition, in order for them to answer in the course of the voyage. For all intents and purposes, Michaelis was the spiritual father of the Arabia-expedition.
