Rare second edition of this handbook on the cultivation of fruit trees and the study of fruit by of one of the major works by the co-founder of German pomology J. L. Christ (1739–1813), a pastor by profession, was the leading pomologist of his time. In two of his own tree nurseries, he dedicated himself to the cultivation of fruit trees and laid the foundation for systematic fruit growing. His systematic classification of fruit varieties is also significant

Old paper-label pasted on to top of spines. Ex-libris pasted on to pasted down front end-paper. Light wear to extremities, internally very nice and clean. Second revised and enlarged edition of one of the most famous treatises published by the great French agronomist Henry Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782), in order to introduce Jethro Tull's innovative methods to France. Tull is considered to be one of the early proponents of a scientific – and especially empirical – approach to agriculture. He helped transform agricultural practices by inventing or improving numerous implements. "The first half of the eighteenth century had witnessed the beginning of a technological renaissance in agriculture, chiefly in England, where it was notably celebrated in the writings of Jethro Tull. Although the ideas of Tull and Duhamel enjoyed substantial popularity among a progressive group of French landowners, the opposition - either in the form of active criticism or in the passive inertia of an almost medieval agrarian society - was too strong for France to enjoy the rapid agricultural changes which occurred in England and, shortly after, in Scotland. However, enough progress was made for Duhamel to receive recognition for his pioneering work (the present) during his lifetime." (DSB)

Kjøbenhavn (Copenhagen, Reitzel, 1836. 8vo. Both volumes together in one very nice contemporary half calf with richly gilt spine. Corners bumped, slight wear to capitals, and wear along edges. Old owner's name to title-page. A small damp stain to outer margin throughout, only on the last leaves touching a few letters. A few leaves with light brownspotting. All in all an unusually nice copy. First edition of the the first full translation into Danish of “The Odyssey”, being Wilster’s magnificent translation, which is an epic classic on Danish hexameters that is still read today, in spite of the appearance of later translations. The translation was extremely popular when it appeared and has maintained its role as the standard translation of Homer's Odyssey to this day.

First printing of a groundbreaking paper in biochemistry and physiology, as Graham here introduced the distinction between colloidal and crystalloid substances by his method of separating animal and other fluids."Although some isolated investigations on colloids had been carried out before Graham, his publications in this field laid the foundations of colloid chemistry. In "On the Diffusion of Liquids," Graham applied to liquids the exact method of inquiry he had applied to gases twenty years before, and he succeeded in placing the subject of liquid diffusion on about the same footing as that to which he had raised the subject of gaseous diffusion prior to the discovery of his numerical law.
