Amsterdam, Pierre de Coup, 1712. 4to. In contemporary full calf with five raised bands. Binding with considerable wear, scratches, wormholes and stains to boards, upper and lower compartment on spine with loss of leather, corner bumped and with loss of leather, especially upper corner on frontboard. Hinges weak. Small worm-tract to outer margin of first 250 ff., otherwise internally nice and clean. (2), CXXII, (4), 613, (1), (4), 506, (32), 28 pp. + frontispiece. Second edition of the first French translation of Pufendorf's magnum opus, one of the fundamental works of natural law. In this milestone work of political and legal thought, Pufendorf presents his system of universal law, which profoundly revised the natural law theories of Hobbes and Grotius. In his teaching, that the will of the state is but the sum of the individual wills that constitute it, he shows himself a precursor of Rousseau and of the "Social Contract"."It is a complete system of public, private and international law. Against Hobbes's view he contended that the state of nature was one of peace, not war, and heurged the view that international law... existed between all nations... [a work] of great importance" (David Walker, The Oxford Companion to Law)."In the 'De jure naturae et gentium' Pufendorf took up in great measure the theories of Grotius and sought to complete them by means of the doctrines of Hobbes and of his own ideas. His first important point was that natural law does not extend beyond the limits of this life and that it confines itself to regulating external acts. He disputed Hobbes's conception of the state of nature and concluded that the state of nature is not one of war but of peace. But this peace is feeble and insecure, and if something else does not come to its aid it can do very little for the preservation of mankind. As regards public law Pufendorf, while recognizing in the state (civitas) a moral person (persona moralis), teaches that the will of the state is but the sum of the individual wills that constitute it, and that this association explains the state. In this a priori conception, in which he scarcely gives proof of historical insight, he shows himself as one of the precursors of Rousseau and of the Contrat social. Pufendorf powerfully defends the idea that international law is not restricted to Christendom, but constitutes a common bond between all nations because all nations form part of humanity." (Encyclopedia Brit.).Graesse V, 504Brunet only mention the later 1720- and 1734-edition.

Paris, Crochard, 1818. 8vo. In contemporary half calf. Wear to extremities and paperlabel pasted on to top to spine. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago.", tome 8 (Cahier 3). Entire volume offered. Stamps to verso of title-page and verso of plates. (Pelletier & Caventou's paper): pp. 323-324. (Entire issue:) 448 pp. + 1 plate. First printing of this classic paper in chemistry in which the authors announced their discovery of Strychnine. This was the first alkali of vegetable origin to be discovered after morphine. This discovery (and their discovery of chlorophyll) brought them international fame. "Strychnine was only the second alkaloid to be extracted, the first was morphine. Pelletier and Caventou wanted to name their new alkaloid vauqueline after Nicolas Vauquelin, one of their associates who had refined the technique of ether extraction for use in isolating alkaloids. However, the officers of the Académe des Sciences in Paris rejected the idea on the grounds that a respected scientist’s name should not be paired with a deadly poison. In addition to strychnine the pair isolated other important compounds from plants including caffeine, chlorophyll and the anti-malaria drug quinine. (Paul L. Burnham). Parkinson:"Breakthroughs", 1818 C. - Garrison & Morton: 1846. The first issue also contains their importent memoir "Examen chimique de la Cochenillee et de sa matière colorante", pp. 250-287 which describes how they obtained crotonic acid from croton oil and analyzed carmine in the cochineal.

München, Piper & Co., (1950). 8vo. Original orange full cloth with gilt lettering. Original dust-jacket. Dust-jacket with some tears to extremities and lacking ab. 2 cm. at lower capital. Internally very nice and clean. With the bookplate of the famous American educator Paul Arthur Schilpp. 349, (1), (1, -advertisement) pp. Inscribed by the author to front free end-paper: "Für Paul Schilpp/ Herzlich/ Karl Jaspers". First edition, later issue (8th.-11th. thousand), presentation-copy for Paul Schilpp, of one of Jaspers' most important works within political philosophy. The German philosopher and psychiatrist Karl Theodor Jaspers (1883-1969) was one of the main exponents of existentialism in Germany and he had an enormous impact on theology, psychiatry and philosophy of his time. Later on, his works in political philosophy came to exersize an even greater influence upon 20th century thought. "Karl Jaspers (1883 - 1969) began his academic career working as a psychiatrist and, after a period of transition, he converted to philosophy in the early 1920s. Throughout the middle decades of the twentieth century he exercised considerable influence on a number of areas of philosophical inquiry: especially on epistemology, the philosophy of religion, and political theory. His philosophy has its foundation in a subjective-experiential transformation of Kantian philosophy, which reconstructs Kantian transcendentalism as a doctrine of particular experience and spontaneous freedom, and emphasizes the constitutive importance of lived existence for authentic knowledge. Jaspers obtained his widest influence, not through his philosophy, but through his writings on governmental conditions in Germany, and after the collapse of National Socialist regime he emerged as a powerful spokesperson for moral-democratic education and reorientation in the Federal Republic of Germany." Leipzig, Laurentius Sigism. Cornerus, 1665. Contemp. full vellum, but back to wide as another work has been taken out. Engraved frontisp. (30),391,(30) pp. Some light browning to leaves. On verso of frontispiece a note in contemporary hand. Scarce second edition of Wower's Polymathia presented as a fragment of a greater work he was writing "De Studia Veterum", i.e. on the intellectual pursuits of the ancients, or on the studies to which the ancients devoted themselves, by which he meant the "artes liberales" as appears from the plan of the work printed at the beginning of the "fragment". The "studia veterum" in Wower's eyes, the model and the point of departure from any studia of the moderns. The work concerns one of the great "artes liberales", namely "Grannatice". He tries to extract a theory of "grammatice" out of the staggering testimonies of ancient testimonies (from the third BC to the end of Antiquity), as though they were all campatible with each other, which they are not. (Benetto Bravo, Critice and Historical Criticism). - Not in Brunet . Not in Graesse.
