(Frankfurt a. M.), S. Fischer Verlag, 1958. Orig. black full cloth w. red lettering to back and front board in excellent orig. red dust-jacket. An excellent, clean, near mint copy. First German edition of this modern classic, which tells the tragic story of the medical doctor and poet, Yuri Zhivago, in the years during the Russian Revolution.Though begun several decades earlier, the work was completed in 1956, and was submitted for publication to the journal "Novij Mir" the same year, but due to the controversial contents of the work and the Soviet government's dislike of Pasternak, it was rejected. The following year the manuscript was smuggled out of the Soviet Union by the Italian publisher Feltrinelli, who published the book in Russian in Milan in 1957. Already the following year numerous European translations of the work had been made, and the English and Italian ones appeared as the first. These immediate translations and the publications of them partly caused Pasternak being awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1958. Due to the immense popularity of the work, alle the European translations were reprinted numerous times. In 1965 the work was made into the large-scale film-production by David Lean, which was nominated for ten Oscars and won five.

With titlepage to Part I of theTransacti First appearance of Daniell's first paper on the construction of the famous "Daniell-Cell", in which he announced his invention of the battery, THE FIRST RELIABLE SOURCE OF AN ELECTRIC CURRENT. In the new invention by Charles Wheatstone of the electric telegraph in 1837, the Daniell cell was used as the electric source. In 1831 Daniell was appointed profesor of Chemistry at King's College London. He invented several scientific instruments, including a hygrometer for measuring humidity he is best known for his work in electrochemistry, his interests having been aroused by the work of his good friend Faraday. Volta's battery had the defect of rapid diminution in current. What was needed, however, was a battery yielding a constant current over a considerable lenght of time. In 1836 Daniell succeeded, producing the Daniell cell, of copper and zinc. his was the first reliable source of electric current.Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1836 P.

Leipzig, Laurentius Sigism. Cornerus, 1665. Contemp. full vellum, but back to wide as another work has been taken out. Engraved frontisp. (30),391,(30) pp. Some light browning to leaves. On verso of frontispiece a note in contemporary hand. Scarce second edition of Wower's Polymathia presented as a fragment of a greater work he was writing "De Studia Veterum", i.e. on the intellectual pursuits of the ancients, or on the studies to which the ancients devoted themselves, by which he meant the "artes liberales" as appears from the plan of the work printed at the beginning of the "fragment". The "studia veterum" in Wower's eyes, the model and the point of departure from any studia of the moderns. The work concerns one of the great "artes liberales", namely "Grannatice". He tries to extract a theory of "grammatice" out of the staggering testimonies of ancient testimonies (from the third BC to the end of Antiquity), as though they were all campatible with each other, which they are not. (Benetto Bravo, Critice and Historical Criticism). - Not in Brunet . Not in Graesse.

"Methods of indexing Finger Mark" being the first appearance. These two paper constitute the very first appearance of the anthropometric classification of fingerprint."Galtons establisment of fingerprinting as an easy and almost infallible means of human identification transformed a difficult subject, and his taxonomy of prints is basically that used today".(DSB).

London, Taylor and Francis, 1902. 8vo. Bound in contemporary half calf with marbled boards and gilt lettering to spine. Two title labels in red and black with gilt lettering to spine and five rasied bands with gilt ornamentation. In "Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science", Sixth Series, Vol. 4, 1902. Front hinge cracked, frontboard almost detached.L Library label pasted on to pasted down front free end-paper and library stamp to verso of title page. A very fine and clean copy. Pp. 370-96; Pp. 569-585. [Entire volume: (8), 732 pp. + 6 plates. First printing of Rutherford and Soddy's seminal paper on the nature of radioactivity, "the revolutionary theory that radio-activity is a by-product of the transmutation of one form of matter into another." (PMM 411). The theory "provided the break with the past that was clearly needed [...] In this great theory of radioactivity which these young men sprung on the learned, timid, rather unbelieving, and, as yet, unquantized world of physics of 1902 and 1903, they unabashedly but forward the idea that some atomic species are subject to spontaneous transmutation." (PAIS, Inward Bound). They both were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their work within radioactivity. Rutherford and Soddy introduced the expression "atomic energy" in this paper, "not just for the energy released by a radioactive element, but much more generally for the energy locked in any atom" (Brown et al., Twentieth Century Physics, I, p. 63)."By this time Rutherford had recognized the need for skilled chemical assistance in his radioactivity investigations and had secured the services of a young chemistry demonstrator at McGill, Frederick Soddy. Together they removed most of the activity from a thorium compound, calling the active matter thorium X; but they too found that the X product lost its activity and that the thorium recovered its original level in a few weeks. Had Becquerel's similar finding for uranium not been immediately at hand, they might have searched for errors in their work. In early 1902, however, they began to plot the activities as a function of time, seeing evidence of a fundamental relationship in the equality of the time for thorium X to decay to half value and thorium to double in activity. This work led directly to Rutherford's greatest achievement at McGill, for with Soddy he advanced the still-accepted explanation of radioactivity. Their iconoclastic theory, variously called transformation, transmutation, and disintegration, first appeared in 1902 and was refined in the following year. Although alchemy had long been exorcised from scientific chemistry, they declared that "radioactivity is at once an atomic phenomenon and the accompaniment of a chemical change in which new kinds of matter are produced." The radioactive atoms decay, they argued, each decay signifying the transmutation of a parent into a daughter element, and each type of atom undergoing its transformation in a characteristic period. This insight set the course for their next several years of research, for the task was then to order all the known radioelements into decay series and to search for additional members of these families." (DSB)The volume contains several other important papers by contemporary phycicians.
