MAIMAN, T. A.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn47047
London, Macmillan, 1960. Royal8vo. Bound in full cloth with two black leather title label to spine. In "Nature", Vol. 187, 1960. First printing of this fundamental paper in the history of the laser, which described the first operating laser. The paper "might be considered the most important per word of any of the wonderful papers in Nature over the past century" (Garwin. A century of Nature. P. 107)."Maiman made the first laser operate on 16 may 1960 at the Hughes Research Laboratory in California, by shining a high-power flash lamp on a ruby rod with silver-coated surfaces. He promptly submitted a short report on the work (Stimulated Optical Radiation in Ruby) to the journal Physical Review Letters, but the editors turned it down." (Ibid.). Maiman turned to Nature where the paper was better received and published on 6 August. It was turned down by Physical Review Letters because Maiman in June 1960 had submitted a paper with a similar topic (Optical and Microwave-Optical Experiments in Ruby). "While lasers quickly caught the public imagination, perhaps for their similarity to the 'heat rays' of science fiction, practical applications took years to develop. A young physicist named Irnee D'Haenens, while working with Maiman on the ruby laser, joked that the device was 'a solution looking for a problem,' and the line lingered in the laser community for many years" (Britannica). The development of the laser was essentially built upon the insights discovered by Albert Einstein in 1917 in his "Zur Quantentheorie der Strahlung". Einstein had shown theoretically that stimulated emission of electromagnetic radiation, a re-derivation of Max Planck's law of radiation, would make an atom or molecule to fall to a lower energy state and emit more waves. The development of the laser is not only of seminal importance in itself, it is also a testament to a period in which many of the achievements within theoretical physics reached in the early part of the 20th century went from being theoretical to applied. Gedeon 92.

Paris, Crochard, 1818. 8vo. In a bit later half cloth. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago.", tome 8 (Cahier 3). Entire volume offered. No institutional stamps. Light occassional brownspotting, otherwise a good copy. (Pelletier & Caventou's paper): pp. 323-324. (Entire issue:) 448 pp. + 1 plate. First printing of this classic paper in chemistry in which the authors announced their discovery of Strychnine. This was the first alkali of vegetable origin to be discovered after morphine. This discovery (and their discovery of chlorophyll) brought them international fame. "Strychnine was only the second alkaloid to be extracted, the first was morphine. Pelletier and Caventou wanted to name their new alkaloid vauqueline after Nicolas Vauquelin, one of their associates who had refined the technique of ether extraction for use in isolating alkaloids. However, the officers of the Académe des Sciences in Paris rejected the idea on the grounds that a respected scientist’s name should not be paired with a deadly poison. In addition to strychnine the pair isolated other important compounds from plants including caffeine, chlorophyll and the anti-malaria drug quinine. (Paul L. Burnham). Parkinson:"Breakthroughs", 1818 C. - Garrison & Morton: 1846. The first issue also contains their importent memoir "Examen chimique de la Cochenillee et de sa matière colorante", pp. 250-287 which describes how they obtained crotonic acid from croton oil and analyzed carmine in the cochineal.

Headlines in neat contemporary hand to each leaf. Extremities with wear. Last 11 ff. with heavy damstain, otherwise internally nice and clean. (36), 501, (86) pp. First edition Schultens’ important work in which he fundamentally changed comparative Semitic philology. He stated that Hebrew is no longer could be regarded as the first language, from which the other Oriental languages diverged, but as one Semitic language among the others. “Schultens emphasized with revolutionary exaggeration the extent of the change brought about by the new knowledge. Far from accepting the traditional view that Arabic (like other languages) was a degenerate form of Hebrew, Schultens maintained that Hebrew was only one Semitic dialect, while the purest and clearest such dialect was Arabic…But in spite of the high value accorded to Arabic by Schultens, his use of it was infelicitous and far from commendable even from the point of view of an Arabist. He nevertheless marked the beginning of an epoch which continued into the mid-20th century, in which one of the main forms of learned linguistic study was the use of cognate languages for the elucidation of difficulties in Hebrew” (Barr, “Literature,” 1395.)
