Paris, L'Imprimerie Royale, 1716. 4to. Without wrappers. Extracted from "Mémoires de l'Academie des Sciences. Année 1713". With engraved frontispiece and titlepage to "Année" 1713. Pp. 324-348 and 2 large folded engraved plates. First appearance of Sauveur's last importent work on the theory of sound."Later, in work presented in 1713 (the paper offered), Sauveur derived the frequency of a string theoretically. He treated the string, stretched horizontally and hanging in a curve because of the gravitational field, as a compound pendulum and he found the frequency of the swinging motion, assumed to have small amplitude. His results agrees with the modern one except for a factor of the quadratic root of 10/phi....... It was through Sauveur and the Paris Academy that ideas about harmonics became well known in the early eighteenth century. Sauveur's terminology, including "harmonics" and "node", was adopted and still is current." (DSB XII, p. 128).

First printing of Fresnel's importent memoir on the aberration effect from a moving earth."In the same year in which the memoir on diffraction was submitted, Fresnel published an investigation of the influence of the earth's motion on light (the paper offered).....if we suppose the aether surrounding the earth to be at rest and unaffected by the earth's motion of the telescope, which we may suppose directed to the true place of the star, and the image of the star will therefore be displaced from the central spider-line at the focus by a distance equal to that which the earth describes while the light is travelling through the telescope. This agrees with what is actually observed."(Whittaker "A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity" I, pp. 108-9).

SCARRON, PAUL.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn61807
Amsterdam, Wetstein, 1712. 8vo. In contemporary full calf with four raised bands and with embossed title and ornamentation to spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Wear to extremities, head of spine chipped. Internally with a few dampstains. 436, (2), 180 pp. + 2 frontispiece. Uncommon later edition of Scarron’s highly popular masterpiece which recounts the adventures of a troupe of provincial travelling actors, weaving comic anecdotes of their romantic exploits and the central love story between Leandre and his beloved Angelique into a rich and realistic narrative depicting rural France. It was first published in 1651. "Scarron's work is very abundant and very unequal. ... the Roman comique (1651–1657) is a work the merit of which is denied by no competent judge. Unfinished, and a little desultory, this history of a troop of strolling actors is almost the first French novel, in point of date, which shows real power of painting manners and character, and is singularly vivid. It is in the style of the Spanish picaresque romance, and furnished Théophile Gautier with the idea and with some of the details of his Capitaine Fracasse. Scarron also wrote some shorter novels: La Précaution inutile, which inspired Sedaine's Gageure imprévue; Les Hypocrites, to which Tartuffe owes something, and others. Of his plays Jodelet (1645) and Don Japhet d'Arménie (1653) are the best.” (Encyclopedia Britannica) Paul Scarron (1610 – 1660) was a French poet, dramatist, and novelist, born in Paris. Scarron was the first husband of Françoise d'Aubigné, who later became Madame de Maintenon and secretly married King Louis XIV of France.

Den sjældne originaludgave Treschows filosofiske hovedværk.The scarce first edition Treschow's main philosophical work.Niels Treschow (1751 - 1833) is generally accepted as the most important Norwegian philosopher before the 20th century. He played a prominent role in the development of philosophy in Scandinavia in the late 18th and far into the 19th century. He was the first professor of Philosophy at the University of Christiania (today Oslo) (from 1813), and before that he had been professor of Philosophy at the University of Copenhagen (from 1803 till 1813), where he played a very important role, changing the tradition of philosophy in Scandinavia by being one of the first teachers of philosophy, who was also a philosopher himself. His lectures and works were of seminal character, and his way of thinking cleared a path for later important philosophers. He became "Ridder af Dannebrog" (an honorary title, -"Knight of Dannebrog" (Dannbrog being the Danish flag), and he was a member of both the Norwegian and the Danish Academies of Science.Treschow was especially fond of the German rationalists and romantics as well as of English Empiricism, which played a great role in his own philosophy. He was never very influenced by Kant's critical philosophy, and his own philosophy was to a large extemt governed by emotions and intuition, -he was never afraid to think according to his feelings.Apart from being a philosopher, Treschow was also a politician of some influence under the first Norwegian government. All of Treschow's works are scarce and sought after, and they rarely appear on the market.

DANMARKS LITTERARISKE PROGRESSER -

lyn62520
Odense, 1782. 8vo. In contemporary half calf with four raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. In "Danmarks litterariske progresser", vol. 2, entire volume offered. A nice and clean copy. Pp. 172-175 (Entire volume: (4), 364, (2) pp.) The uncommon first mentioning of Adam Smith’s “Wealth of Nations” in Denmark. It was translated early into Danish (1779-1780) but curiously it did not spark any debate at first. “After the success which the book met very soon after its publication in England—the issue, as known, in nine parts in the years 1776–1779—one might have expected that the book should also in Denmark have attracted attention and have been the subject of enthusiastic discussion. That was, however, not the case; the only place where one finds the book mentioned soon after publication is—excepting Gyldendal’s own announcement in Adresse-Contoirs Efterretninger—in Det almindelige danske Bibliotek, 10th number for 1779 and 6th number for 1760, where the book is briefly mentioned in the notices of forthcoming publications with statement of its size and price. Not until much later - in the year 1782 - is there mention of the book. Announcements are found only in two monthly publications, namely, in Danmarks litterariske Progresser (1782, second volume, pages 172–175. Published in Odense) [The present and then later:] in Kjøbenhavnske nye Efterretninger for lærde Sager (October 25, 1782, No. 43, pages 683–687. Published in Copenhagen).” (Lai, Adam Smith Across Nations, p. 50).

ANDERSEN, H. C.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn57269
Kjøbenhavn, C. A. Reitzel, 1838. Indbundet ubeskåret i et nyere marmoreret papbind med forgyldt titelfelt på forpermen. Enkelte brunpletter.Bound uncut in a later marbled paper binding with gilt title to front board. A bit of brownspotting. Scarce first edition of Andersen's "Three Poetical Works", which contains the first printing on one of his most important fairy tales, "The Galoches of Fortune", which is in fact his very first fairy tale for adults, here in the original version (it was later re-written for publication in Andersen's collected fairy tales 1849-50). It appeared while Andersen was still publishing his first fairy tale-collection, namely as early as 1838, and constitutes the 18th fairy tale that he publishes, predating e.g. "The Steadfast Tin Soldier". "The Galoches of Fortune" is of the utmost importance to the development of Andersen's fairy tale writing and his style of writing. It is not only his first grown-up fairy-tale, it is also the first, in which he works with dividing a fairy tale into chapters, here bound together by the galoche-motive as the red line. This highly important fairy tale was so important that even though it differs in style from the other fairy tales for children that appeared during the same period, it needed to be included in the great collection of Andersen's fairy tales that appeared in 1849-50. But for this publication, the fairy tale needed re-writing, both linguistically and stylistically, and thus it is only in the present publication that we have it in its original version."The Galoches of Fortune" was very important to Andersen himself, who mentioned it in several letters while he was working on it. In a letter to Ms. Hanck, dated March 16 1938, he talks about his "Three new poetical works"; "The first (i.e. The Galoches of Fortune") is a fairy tale and I think the most satirical one I have written as well as some of the most phantastic that our literature holds." - Clearly showing the importance that Andersen himself bestowed upon the work. In a letter to Henriette Hanck, dated February 10 1838, he emphasized that "The Galoshes of Fortune" were "not for children". As the fairy-tale is more in line with the "Hoffmann-like imagination" that we also see in "A Walking Tour" than with the spirit and style of the Fairy Tales for Children, Andersen himself also had some anxieties about it, however, and wrote to Frederik Læssøe on February 23 1938 "I'm working on a fairy-tale, but now regret these juggling acts with the golden apples of imagination".His anxieties world prove not to be completely unfounded. The work was widely read, but it also caused quite a bit of controversy. Kierkegaard, for instance, hated the work and harshly criticized its satirical features. As "The Galoches of Fortune" appear in May 1838, Kierkegaard's first work, "From the Papers of one Still Living", appears in September the same year. That work constitutes his long, sharp critique of Hans Christian Andersen, in which he ridicules Andersen and the genre of fairy tales in general. Kierkegaard furthermore denies that Andersen has any aptitude as a novelist and accuses him of not having "philosophy of life". Andersen had already heard rumours of the book on 30th August and felt martyred at the thought of what lay ahead. The dramatic poem "A Real Soldier" was submitted to the Royal Theatre in April 1836, but returned in May of the same year. BFN 320.

Groningen, Batavia, 1935. 8vo. Original printed green wrappers. Light sunning to spine and upper part of front wrapper, otherwise a very fine, fresh and clean copy, also internally. Old owner's name to title-page, dated 1947. (8), 115 pp. First edition of Jasper's seminal work "Reason and Existence", which constitutes one of the most important contributions to the interpretation of the two great existentialists, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, as well as a primary witness to the anti-Nazi philosophy of pre-World War II philosophy and the themes that divided the great philosophers of the era. It is in this work that Jaspers introduces the concept of "das Umgreifende".The German philosopher and psychiatrist, Karl Theodor Jaspers (1883-1969) was one of the main exponents of existentialism in Germany and he had an enormous impact on theology, psychiatry and philosophy of his time. The present work constitutes the five lectures on reason and existence that he gave at the University of Groningen in Holland during the spring of 1935, a series of lectures that introduce us to the main themes of the philosophy of the influential thinker.
