(Frankfurt a. M.), S. Fischer Verlag, 1958. Orig. black full cloth w. red lettering to back and front board in excellent orig. red dust-jacket. An excellent, clean, near mint copy. First German edition of this modern classic, which tells the tragic story of the medical doctor and poet, Yuri Zhivago, in the years during the Russian Revolution.Though begun several decades earlier, the work was completed in 1956, and was submitted for publication to the journal "Novij Mir" the same year, but due to the controversial contents of the work and the Soviet government's dislike of Pasternak, it was rejected. The following year the manuscript was smuggled out of the Soviet Union by the Italian publisher Feltrinelli, who published the book in Russian in Milan in 1957. Already the following year numerous European translations of the work had been made, and the English and Italian ones appeared as the first. These immediate translations and the publications of them partly caused Pasternak being awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1958. Due to the immense popularity of the work, alle the European translations were reprinted numerous times. In 1965 the work was made into the large-scale film-production by David Lean, which was nominated for ten Oscars and won five.

Berlin, Springer, 1926. 8vo. Bound in contemporary half cloth. In "Zeitschrift für Physik", Bd. 39. Entire volume offered. Stamp to front free end paper. Fine and clean. Pp. 499-518. [Entire volume: IV, 948 pp]. First edition of this important paper in which Heisenberg - after inventing Quantum Mechanics the year before (1925) - investigates some of the fundamental aspects of the new theory. Heisenberg recognizes the invariance of the wave equation with respect to various transformations. "It is clear that such invariance exists with respect to an interchange of the coordinates of identical particles, e.g. of two electrons in an atom of two nuclei of the same kind in a molecule. As a consequence, the wave function of a non-degenerate stationary state must either remain unchanged or may only change sign when the transformation is applied to it....Indeed, in this way Pauli's exclusion principle for electrons found a formulation in terms of wave mechanics."(K. Kronik in Memorial Volume to Wolfgang Pauli).Cassidy 1926e

Berlin, Springer, 1934. 8vo. Bound in contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering, In "Zeitschrift für Physik", Band 89, 1934. Entire issue offered. Two stamps to title page, otherwise fine. Pp. 27-39. [Entire volume : VIII, 836 pp.]. First appearance of Weisskopf seminal paper in which he for the very first time gave an indication that QED (Quantum electro dynamics) might be made a tractable theory."At Pauli's suggestion [Weisskopf] computed the electron's self-energy in perturbation theory, including both electrons and positrons. In doing this calculation [Weisskopf] made a sign error, which was quickly pointed out by Wendell Furry; when this was taken into account, the result was a self-energy that diverged logarithmically as the electron's radius a tended to zero (1934). This was an astonishing result: Classical electrodynamics was long known to produce a linear divergence, and the one-particle version of QED, already mentioned, yielded a quadratically divergent self-energy. The "soft" logarithmic divergence of QED with electrons and positrons was a first indication that QED might be made a tractable theory" (Jackson, Victor Frederick Weisskopf).Later Feynman, Schwinger and Tomonago shared the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physics "for their fundamental work in quantum electrodynamics [QED], with deep ploughing consequences for the physics of elementary particels".

He was born in Germany and came to Copenhagen at the age of four when his father, Balthasar Münter (1735-1793), took up a pastoral position at St. Peter's Church. He himself became a theologian in 1781, followed by a two-year stay in Göttingen, where he studied church history and archaeology. From 1784 to 1787, he stayed in Italy, which resulted in the present work.
