Paris, Hippolyte-Louis Guérin & Louis-Franncois Delatour, 1753. 8vo. Uniformly bound in two contemporary full calf bindings with four raised bands and richly gilt spines. Old paper-label pasted on to top of spines. Ex-libris pasted on to pasted down front end-paper. Light wear to extremities, internally very nice and clean. (2), 384 pp. + 6 folded plates; (4), 454, (2) pp. + 9 folded plates. Second revised and enlarged edition of one of the most famous treatises published by the great French agronomist Henry Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782), in order to introduce Jethro Tull's innovative methods to France. Tull is considered to be one of the early proponents of a scientific – and especially empirical – approach to agriculture. He helped transform agricultural practices by inventing or improving numerous implements. "The first half of the eighteenth century had witnessed the beginning of a technological renaissance in agriculture, chiefly in England, where it was notably celebrated in the writings of Jethro Tull. Although the ideas of Tull and Duhamel enjoyed substantial popularity among a progressive group of French landowners, the opposition - either in the form of active criticism or in the passive inertia of an almost medieval agrarian society - was too strong for France to enjoy the rapid agricultural changes which occurred in England and, shortly after, in Scotland. However, enough progress was made for Duhamel to receive recognition for his pioneering work (the present) during his lifetime." (DSB)

Second Series" Bound with all the six original front-wrappers for all six parts of the volume (bound in at rear) in a very nice contemporary blue full cloth binding with gilt lettering and gilt ex-libris ("Belford College. Univ. London") to spine. Minor bumping to extremities. Binding tight, and in excellent, very nice, clean, and fresh condition, in- as well as ex-ternally. Simpson./ 1949-50" to pasted-down front free end-paper. Library-label tipped in at front free end-paper. Pp. 161-175. [Entire volume: (4), 483 pp.]. First edition of one of the last articles by a key figure in Map-colour theory. Percy John Heawood, proved in 1890 that Alfred Kempe's Four-colour theorem was flawed and established his own five-colour theory. "Heawood was, however, able to salvage an important idea, that of Kempe chains, from Kempe's proof. Using Kempe's work, Heawood was able to prove that every map is 5-colorable." (Hilton, Mathematical vistas: from a room with many windows, 2002, p. 148 ). "It is not known how Heawood became aware of the Four-Color problem. However, his life's work in mathematics was centered on it. After his first paper, 1890, he published seven more papers on the same subject, the last in 1949 at the age of 88.", his biographer Gabor Dirac wrote. (Fritsch, Rudolf. Paris, Crochard, 1836. 8vo. Contemp. hcalf. Raised bands, gilt spine. A few scratches to spine. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago.", 2e Series, Tome 66. 448 pp. a. 1 folded engraved plate. (Entire volume offered). Laurent's papers: pp. 136-213 a. pp. 314-335. Internally fine and clean. First printing of Laurent's long paper in which he tried to develope the rules of substitution into a chemical system oforganic compounds, the "Nucleus theory". Laurent is considered one of the most importent chemists in the 18th centuryHis first theoretical efforts were largely taxonomic in character. He then began to develop a pictorial model based on atomistic representations as considered by earlier French crystallographers. Laurent’s "nucleus theory" or "theory of derived radicals"located every substance at the intersection of two kinds of transformations: substitutions, which operate on the matter inside the fundamental radical and do not affect its general chemical behavior, and external modifications, which influence various chemical functions. (DSB)."In his studies of the derivatives of naphtalene, Laurent was impressed by the fact the the fundamental properties of these compounds remained, in spite of the various substitutions which took place in them. A certain nucleus seemed to impose its properties on all its derivatives. This nucleus theory was the basis for the unitary which was specifically formulated by Gerhardt."(Leicester & Klickstein "A Source Book in Chemistry", p. 345).The volume contains other notable papers by Regnault, D'Arcet, Chevreuil, Rose, Gay-Lussac and Carlo Matteucci's importent memoir "Sur la Propagation du Courant Electriques dans les Liquides", pp. 225-313.

Internally very fine and clean. Pp. 482-500. [Entire volume: (2), 749, (3), VII, 450 pp.]. First printing of Einstein's famous lecture in which he anticipated the discovery of black-body radiation and famously stated that: "the next phase in the development of theoretical physics will bring us a theory of light, which may be regarded as a sort of fusion of the undulatory and emission theories of light" (The present paper, Pp. 482-3). He furthermore stated that the electromagnetic fields that constitute light will no longer appear to be states of a hypothetical medium, but rather independent entities emitted by the sources of light, exactly as in the Newtonian emission theory of light. The paper was delivered as a lecture before the 81st assembly of the 'Gesellschaft Deutscher Naturforscher' in Salzburg on 21st September 1909.The occasion was important for Einstein since he for years had been working in scientific exile. Among those who attended Einstein's lecture were some of the world's foremost physicists such as; Max von Laue, Max Born, Arnold Sommerfeld. All published papers of their own in the present volume. Weil No. 30.

Two library paper labels pasted on to spine. Wrappers loose, internally fine and clean. (V), 1, 54 pp. Offprint of Hayek influential paper on durable and non-durable goods presented as a Critique of the Crises-Theory of W.T. Foster and W. Catchings with some Remarks on the Theory of the Relationship between Money and Capital.Widely publicized in the United States at the timewere proposals by Foster and Catchings which Hayek has described asvariations on 'underconsumption' theories of economic cycles. Hayekargued against such theories in his initial lectures as a Privatdozent in Vienna: "His published essay "Gibt es einen Widersinn desSparens?" (1929) (later translated into English as "The Paradox of Saving") came to the attention of Lionel (later Lord) Robbins, whoinvited Hayek to give a series of lectures at the London School of Economics. So successful were the lectures, and the ensuingpartnership with Robbins, that Hayek remained in England to becomethe Tooke professor at the LSE." (Kresge, Hayek on Hayek, P. 8)"This state of affairs, however, may yet be endangered by a new theory of under-consumption now current in the United States and in England. Its authors are people who spare neither money nor time in the propagation of their ideas. Their doctrine is no less fallacious than all the previous theories of under- consumption, but it is not impossible that with able exposition and extensive financial backing it may exert a certain influence on policy in Anglo-Saxon countries. For this 'reason it seems worthwhile subjecting this theory to detailed and exhaustive criticism." (The present paper).

USA, [No printer], 1941. Lex8vo. In the original printed wrappers. "Reprinted for private circulation from The Astrophysical Journal, Vol. 94, No. 3, November 1941". Previous owner's name, the famous English physicist, astronomer and mathematician, [J. H. Jeans] to top right corner of front wrapper. Very light miscolouring to lower left corner of front wrapper, otherwise a very fine and clean copy. Pp. 511-524. Scarce offprint issue, from the library of the influential English physicist and astronomer James Hopwood Jeans, of Chandrasekhar's important paper in which he developed his statistical theory of stellar encounters. In the 1983 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in physic for key discoveries that led to the currently accepted theory on the later evolutionary stages of massive stars.Chandresekhar is famous for showing that the final fate of a star depends on its mass, furthermore he calculated that massive stars would be unable to evolve into white dwarfs, the limiting size called the Chandresekhar Limit."An important question from the point of view of what can be observed is how the cumulative effect of chance encounters affects the orbit of a star measured by what is called "time of relaxation" of the stellar system. Conventional wisdom assumed it could be theoretically calculated by considering the cumulative effect of a large number of two-body encounters. A closer analysis convinced Chandrasekhar that such an idealization did not provide a good approximation to the physical situation in the stellar system. The gravitational field fluctuated in space and time. New methods of treating the problem based on statistics were required. He laid the foundations of such new methods in one of his most celebrated and widely quoted papers, "Stochastic and Statistical Problems in Astronomy," published in 1943. The probability methods reviewed in this paper have found application beyond astronomy in a wide variety of problems and fields as different as colloidal chemistry and stellar dynamics." (DSB) James Hopwood Jeans (1877 -1946) made several important contributions in many areas of physics, including quantum theory, the theory of radiation and stellar evolution. His analysis of rotating bodies led him to conclude that Laplace's theory that the solar system formed from a single cloud of gas was incorrect, proposing instead that the planets condensed from material drawn out of the sun by a hypothetical catastrophic near-collision with a passing star. This theory is not accepted today. Furthermore he is the founder of British cosmology.

First printing of this influential series of papers by Schoenflies, his "fundamental researches into the topological aspects of point set theory" (Anderson. Who gave you the epsilon? P. 144)."The greater part of Schoenflies' original contributions to topology is contained in three papers [The offered] and is devoted to plane topology. He proved the topological invariance of the dimension of the square, and he invented the notions and theorems that are connected with the characterization of the simple closed curve in the plane by its dividing the plane into two domains of which it is the everywhere attainable boundary. There are numerous gaps and wrong statements in this part of Schoenflies' work, and these errors led L. Brouwer to some of his startling discoveries." (DSB).
