LEWIS, GILBERT N. - THE MASS-ENERGY EQUATION DERIVED WITHOUT RELATIVITY.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn47278
London, Taylor & Francis, 1908. Contemp. hcalf. Title-and tomelabels in leather on spine, gilt lettering, spine gilt. Wear to spine ends. A crack along hinges (covers not detached). Spine worn. A stamp to verso of titlepage. In: "The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science", Vol. XVI, Sixth Series. VIII,984 pp., textillustr. and 28 plates. (Entire volume offered). Lewis's paper: pp. 705-717. Internally clean and fine. First apperance of Lewis' first paper on relativity in which he derived the mass-energy relationship in a different way from Albert Einstein's derivation.Lewis’ other theoretical interests also flourished at M.I.T. The publication of Einstein’s theory of relativity (1905) and his mass-energy equation renewed Lewis’ interest in his early speculations on radiation. He derived the mass-energy equation from his early idea of the pressure of light without using the principle of relativity (1908). This striking concurrence of his view with Einstein’s convinced Lewis of the value of his youthful ideas and made him one of the very few early supporters of Einstein and relativity in America. Lewis is best known for his discovery of the covalent bond in chemistry. and his naming of the "photon" in 1926.The volume contains further importent papers by Rutherford & Royds, Lord Kelvin, Barkla, Soddy, J.J. Thomson, W.H. Bragg.

First edition of this importent paper on the logarithms of complex numbers, where Euler clarified such functions. He disagreed with Leibniz that a special function was only applicable for positive numbers, and showed that i was applicable for both negative and positive numbers, only with a difference of a constant. When Euler here (the offered item) came out with the correct form for the logarithm, it was not generally accepted. - Enestrom, Euler Bibliography E 168.

In these papers he shows for the first time how to determine equal weights of substances, that all acids differ only in water content, and that dry acids combines in equal proportions with alkali. In the first paper he also gives the Pygnometer Bottle its modern form."Probably his most importent work was on the strenght of acids and the quantity required to neutralize a given quantity of alkali (two papers published in 1699 and 1700) - the papers offered - Homberg recognized that different alkalis neutralized the same acid in different proportion but believed that the relative strenghts of two acids could be determined by using the same alkali in each case. he treated the the question of neutralization (or dissolvability, as he called it) in quite quantitative fashion, showing that if an alkaline salt were treated with an acid, the gain of weight ofthe salt wasan indication of the amount of acid absorbed....Homberg nevertheless understood the fundamentals of the process and thereby laid the foundation for an understanding the nature of salts."(DSB VI, p. 478).Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1700 C.

Berlin, Julius Springer, 1933. Royal8vo. Bound in contemporary half calf with gilt lettering to spine. In "Die Naturwissenschaften", Vol. 21, 1933. A library stamp to title page, otherwise a very fine and clean. Pp. 787-788. First printing of the influential Meissner effect which lead to the discovery of the phenomenological theory of superconductivity by Fritz and Heinz London in 1935; The Meissner effect is an expulsion of a magnetic field from a superconductor during its transition to the superconducting state and it allowed the first theoretical predictions for superconductivity to be made"In the spring of 1933, in the course of these measurements Meissner and his colleague Robert Ochsenfeld observed a new phenomenon that contributed greatly to the understanding of superconductivity. The magnitude of the magnetic field measured between conductors was a function of the direction of the current, which could be explained by the role played by the earth's magnetic field. Therefore, Meissner and Ochsenfeld carried out the measurements of changes in the magnetic field close to the conductors when these were subject only to the earth's field, that is, without any current running through them. Before superconductivity set in, the magnetic lines of force penetrated the crystals with almost no resistance because of their low susceptibility. From what was known about superconductivity at that time, it was expected that the distribution of the lines of force would remain unchanged if the temperature were lowered below the threshold level. However, Meissner and Ochsenfeld observed an increase in the lines of force in close proximity to the superconductors. Meissner interpreted this result as follows: the magnetic field flux was displaced from the crystals when superconductivity set in the magnetic field flux that previously flowed inside the conductors was now flowing between the crystals." (Entire issue offered with titlepage to vol. 51). Wöhler a. Liebig's paper: pp. 273-308 a.1 engraved plate - Berzeliu's paper: pp. 308-314. Some scattered brownspots. First apperance, but together with the publication in Liebig's Annalen the same year, of Wöhler and Liebig's milestone paper in which they brought order to the complexity of organic compounds. The paper was followed with berzelius' letter in which he praised the authors for their remarkable work and he indicates how their compounds could be represented by formulas. The paper initiated a search for common radicals in other organic compounds from chemists all over the world."The first significent step in finding the order behind the bewildering complexity of organic compounds was made by Wöhler and Liebig in their joint researc on benzaldehyde (oil of bitter almonds) and its derivatives. Here for the first time it was clealy seen that a group of atoms could remain intact throughout a series of reactions and function as a whole - as a radical..... Gay-Lussac's researches on cyanogen confirmed the possibility of the existence of organic radicals, but they first became really significant with the this study of Wöhler and Liebig."
