HERSCHEL, WILLIAM. - THE BASIS OF INTERFEROMETRIC IMAGING IN ASTRONOMY.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn42389
(London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1805). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1805 - Part I. Pp. 31-64 and 1 engraved plate. Clean and fine. First appearance of an importent paper, founding the metric of interstellar space. It was the contemporous discoveries of the first minor planets, ceres in 1801, Pallas in 1802 and Juno in 1803, that prompted Herschel to investigate the origin of the spurious diameters of stars. "Were their apparent diameters as real as those of planets or spurious as for stars? To address this question Herschel conducted an extensive series of experiments in his garden in Slough, examining through his telescope small globules of differing sizes and materials placed in a tree some 800 ft (ca. 244 m) away (Herschel 1805). His observations showed that for the smallest globules the diameters were all spurious and all of the same size. Furthermore, he found that, if just the inner part of the aperture of the telescope were used, the spurious diameters, whether of globules or of stars, were larger. If the whole aperture was employed, the diameters were smaller, and if only an outer annular aperture was used the diameters were smaller still. This experimental discovery that unfilled apertures can be used to obtain high angular resolution remains today the essential basis for interferometric imaging in astronomy (in particular Aperture Masking Interferometry). The theoretical justification of this result came with Airy's analysis of the diffraction pattern of a circular aperture 30 years later (Airy 1835), and it took a further 30 years before the idea of using multiple apertures was developed. In an early study the Reverend W. R. Dawes noted that he had `frequently found great advantage from the use of a perforated whole aperture' and that when observing Venus this produced `a central image of the planet perfectly colourless, and very sharply dened' (Dawes 1866). But it was left to Fizeau, in his submission to the Commission for the Prix Bordin the following year, to remark on `une relation remarquable et n´ecessaire entre la dimension des franges et celle de la source lumineuse' and suggest that by using an interferometric combination of light from two separated slits `il deviendra possible d'obtenir quelques donn´ees nouvelles sur les diametres angulaires de ces astres' (Fizeau 1868)."

MOISSAN, HENRI - ONE OF THE MAJOR PROBLEMS IN CHEMISTRY SOLVED - THE ISOLATION OF FLUORINE

Paris, G. Masson, 1887. 8vo. Contemp. hcalf, raised bands, gilt spine. Light wear along edges. Small stamps on verso of titlepage. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", 6e Series - Tome 12. 576 pp. (Entire volume offered). Moissan's paper: pp. 472-537. Many textillustrations of apparatus in woodcut. First appearance of the paper in which Moissan describes his isolation and observation of the properties of fluorine gas and his succes in producing diamond with his pectacular arc method. Fo these achievements he was the first French to be awarded the Nobel Price in chemistry (1906).The existence of the element fluorine had been well known for many years, but all attempts to isolate it had failed and some experimenters had died in the attempt."Moissan eventually succeeded in preparing fluorine in 1886 by the electrolysis of a solution of potassium hydrogen difluoride (KHF2) in liquid hydrogen fluoride (HF). The mixture was needed because hydrogen fluoride is a non-conductor. The device was built with platinum/iridium electrodes in a platinum holder and the apparatus was cooled to -50 °C. The result was to completely isolate the hydrogen produced from the negative electrode from the fluorine produced at the positive one. This is essentially still the way fluorine is produced today." (24), 144 pp. Beautiful Cambridge style binding with raised bands on back, blindtooled and gilt boards with light brown "mirror", marbled endpapers and blue marbled edges. The so-called Cambridge style binding was very popular in England in the 18th century, and was considered the speciality of the bookbinders of Cambridge, -thus the name; however, this bookbinding-style was practised even earlier in Denmark, where it is called a "mirror-binding", due to the effect caused by the lighter coloured oblong, square centre-piece which is polished and sourrounded by blindtooling and darker coloured mottled calf, creating a mirror-like look. The English were probably inspired by this new Danish method of binding, which is the only important Danish contribution to the art of bookbinding, and annexed the style, giving it the international term for it. This binding is an early example by the first and most important bookbinder in the history of the Cambridge style binding, the Danish J. Boppenhausen the elder. It is in exceptionally good condition. The contents are by the German professor of antiquities in Tübingen, Johannes Nicolai (1665-1708), who wrote this curious and interesting work on different uses and abuses of the glove, considered legally, ritually etc. Among many other examples on the use af the glove, we are told how the heated iron-glove was used for punishing criminals. First and only edition. Brunet IV:61.

KAUFMANN, W.(WALTER). - THE BIRTH OF PARTICLE PHYSICS.

Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1897. No wrappers. In: "Annalen der Physik und Chemie, Neue Folge", Bd. 61, No 7. Titlepager to vol. 61. Pp. 417-640 a. 1 folded plate. (Entire issue offered). Kaufmann's paper: pp. 544-552, textillustrations. A stamp to upper corner of titlepage. Clean and fine. First printing of this landmark paper in particle physics, in which Kaufmann found that the cathode are negatively charged particles, that certain properties of the cathode rays are independent of the nature of the gas that they traverse, and determining the ratio e/m. (charge/mass)"To define the 'birth of an era' is perhaps best left for parlor games. Let me write of the BIRTH OF PARTICLE PHYSICS nevertheless, define it to take place in April 1897, and appoint Kaufmann and Thomson as keepers of the gate. Their respective experimental arrangements...are of comparable quality, their experimental results equally good."(Pais "Inward Bound", p. 84.)."In 1897 three physicists, Weichert, Kaufmann, and Thomson, in independent experiments, found that cathode rays are indeed negatively charged particles having the peculiar property that the ratio of the mass and the charge of these particles is in the order of 1000 times smaller than for the lightest ion, the ion of the hydrogen. The term 'electron', which had previously been used to denote the 'elementary charge' , was soon adopted as the name of the new particle. The electron was the first of the later so-called 'elementary particles' to be discovered." (Siegmund Brandt "The Harvest of a Century" No. 4 (p.16 ff.).

Paris, Chez Garnéry, (1790). 8vo. Bound uncut with broard margins in a nice later half calf with richly gilt spine. Engraved frontispiece depicting a man holder a speech (Discourse de la lantern aux Parisiens, le Procureur Général portant la parole.). First three leaves with a faint damp stain. A fine and clean copy. (5),71,(3),67,(5),45,(3),12 pp. Rare first edition of Desmoulins' collected works. As a journalist and politician Desmoulins played a central role in the French Revolution.LA FRANCE LIBRE had at first been rejected by the French publisher due to its radical content: "popular and democratic government is the only constitution which suits France, and all those who are worthy of the name of men". The storming of the Bastille and Desmoulins' personal and public involvement changed the situation and the pamphlet was quickly published."Camille Desmoulins's pamphlet La France libre, which appeared in July 1789, can be seen as 'the first truly republican manifesto of the revolutionary era'. (Hammersley, French revolutionaries and English republicans, 2005, p. 36). DISCOURS DE LA LANTERNE AUX PARISIENS celebrated political violence and praised the loyalty and patriotism of the citizens who made up the Parisian mob. Since this pamphlet was written from the perspective of the Place de Grève lamppost Desmoulins became known as the "Procureur-général de la lanterne" ("the Lanterne Prosecutor" or "Lanterne Attorney").Desmoulins was a close friend of Georges Danton, a leading figure in the early stages of the French Revolution. Together they were executed by the guillotine on the April 5, 1794 for their central role in the Revolution.
