DIRAC, P.A.M. - THE ALGEBRA OF QUANTUM MECHANICS.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn46991
London, Roayl Society, 1926. Royal 8vo. Full cloth. Gilt lettering to spine. In: "Proceedings of the Royal Society". Series A, Vol. 111. V,753,LIII pp., textillustr. and plates. (Entire volume offered). First appearance of these papers constituting Dirac's own theory of quantum mechanics."Dirac wanted to establish an algebra for quantum variables, or, as he now termed them, q-numbers... He wanted his q-number algebra to be a general and purely mathematical theory that could then be applied to problem of physics. Although it soon turned out that q-number algebra was equivalent to matrix mechanics, in 1926 Dirac's theory was developed as an original alternative to both wave mechanics and matric mechanics. It was very much Dirac's own theory, and he stuck to it without paying much attention to what went on inmatrix mechanics... In the summer of 1926, Dirac published a new and very general version of q-number algebra, this timepresented as a purely mathematical theory. In this paper (offered here) he did not refer to physics at all... The work had little impact on the physics community but seems to have been appreciated by those who cultivated the mathematical aspects of quantum physics. Most of the results obtained by Dirac in his paper "The Elimination of the Nodes in Quantum Mechanics" had been found earlier by the German theorists using a method of matric mechanics, but Dirac was able to improve on some of the results and deduce them from his own system of quantum mechanics."(Helge Kragh).

MENDELÉEFF, D. (MENDELÉEV, MENDELEYEV, MENDELÉEFF). - THE DECISIVE CONFIRMATION OF MENDELEEV'S PERIODIC TABLE OFTHE ELEMENTS.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn49528
Paris, Gauthier-Villars, 1875. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome 81, No 21. Pp. (909-) 992. With titlepage to vol. 81. Mendelejeff's paper: pp. 969-972. Titlepage lightly browned and with a punched stamp in lower margin. Otherwise clean and fine. First apperance of this importent paper which established that Gallium is identical with Eka-aluminum (the missing element between Aluminum and Indium) in Mendelejeff's periodic table. The properties of the new element corresponded well with those predicted. A bitter contorversy was raised between the discoverer of Gallium, Lecog de Boisbaudran and Mendelejeff. "The discovery of the three elements predicted by Mendeleev was, however, of decisive importance in the acceptance of his law. In 1875 Lecoq de Boisbaudran, knowing nothing of Mendeleev’s work, discovered by spectroscopic methods a new metal, which he named gallium. Both in the nature of its discovery and in a number of its properties gallium coincided with Mendeleev’s prediction for eka-aluminum, but its specific weight at first seemed to be less than predicted. Hearing of the discovery, Mendeleev sent to France "Zametka po povodu otkrytia gallia" (the paper offered) ("Note on the Occasion of the Discovery of Gallium"), in which he insisted that gallium was in fact his eka-aluminum. Although Lecoq de Boisbaudran objected to this interpretation, he made a second determination of the specific weight of gallium and confirmed that such was indeed the case. From that moment the periodic law was no longer a mere hypothesis, and the scientific world was astounded to note that Mendeleev, the theorist, had seen the properties of a new element more clearly than the chemist who had empirically discovered it. From this time, too, Mendeleev’s work came to be more widely known;"(DSB).Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1875 C.

Hafnia (Copenhagen), Gøde, 1662. 4to. In blindstamped vellum with title in contemporary hand to spine. Binding with wear and soiling. Front free end-paper with 14-line note in neat contemporary hand. Previous owner's name in contemporary hand. Leaf a2-4 with tear. With occassional browning and annotations throughout. (8), 352, (6) pp. The uncommon first edition of Bircherod’s important and highly influential systematic theological compendium. In the preface, Bircherod describes the book as a new overview (Synopsis) of orthodox Christian theology, new in form, not in content. His method was meant to address two main problems: attacks on theology and disorganized theological teaching. To solve this, he paired correct definitions with opposing heretical views and added all relevant Scripture references for clarity. Jens Bircherod (1658 – 1708) was a Danish bishop, professor in theology and hebrew. Biblioteca Danica I, 185Not in Thesaurus
