.London, Printed by Taylor and Francis - Published by the Author, (1862-) 73. Folio. Papersize 54,5x36,5 cm. Lithographed and fully handcoloured. Two birds, female and male in natural surroundings on a trunk with fungi.. J. Gould & H.C. Richter, del. et lith. - Walter, Imp. Fine and clean. The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.

Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1809. Without wrappers as issued in "Annalen der Physik und der Physikalischen Chemie. Hrsg. Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert", Bd. 31, Drittes Stück. Titlepage to vol. 31. Pp. 225-336 a. 1 engraved plate. (Entire issue offered). Malus's papers: pp. 225-234 a. pp. 286-294. Wollaston's papers: pp. 235-251 a. pp. 252-262 a. Erläuterungen von Gilbert pp. 263-273. Laplace's paper: pp. 274-285. First apperance in German of these importent papers on the refraction and double refraction of light. The papers by Malus is his first two papers on the refraction of light and Laplace's paper is the memoir in which he commented Malus' paper and Huygen's refraction law. "In 1788 Haüy found experimentally that Huygen's law was true only in certain special cases, but in 1802 Wollaston found experimental evidence for the Huygenian construction (the second Wollaston paper offered). In ´"Mémoire sur la mesure du pouvoir réfringent" (the first paper offered) Malus showed that Wollaston's experiments were incomplete, and so the French corpuscularian physicists did not trust Wollaston's results. They thought, moreover, that Wollaston was associated with Tmomas Young and therfore with the new wave hypothesis. In this situation the Institute on January 1808 proposed a prize which required an experimental and theoretical explanation of double refraction. The French "Newtonian" scientists hoped that Malus would find a precise and general law for double refraction within the framework of an emission theory of light. Malus was a skilled mathematician and during 1807 he had carried out experiments on double refraction. By december 1808 Malus had finished his experimental investigations, which verified the Huygenian law. What remained was a theoretical deduction of the law. In January 1809, Laplace published a memoir in which he deduced Huygen's law law within the framework of Newtonian mechanics, using the principle of least action, and Malus considered this an insolence which deprived him of the priority. In 1810 Malus von the prize for his "Théorie sur la double réfraction", published in 1811."(DSB IX, p. 73).

First appearance of this importent paper, the first paper by Rutherford published in England, in which he describes his invention of the "Magnetic detector" before Marconi made use of it in his wireless telegraphy across the Atlantic in 1901.On his arrival at Cambridge (in 1895) his talents were quickly recognized by Professor Thomson. During his first spell at the Cavendish Laboratory, he invented the detector for electromagnetic waves, an essential feature being an ingenious magnetizing coil containing tiny bundles of magnetized iron wire. The detector made it possible to send wireless signals.

Berlin, G. Reimer, 1844. 4to. In "Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik, 28 Band, 2. Heft, 1844". In the original printed wrappers, without backstrip. Fine and clean. [Slonimskyi:] Pp. 179-183; Pp. 184-190. [Entire issue: Pp. 97-192, (2) + 1 plate.]. First printing of Slonimsky's paper on the design of his calculator or multiplying device, probably the earliest Russian contribution to designing a calculator. "In the middle of the last century, the mathematician Zinovy (Zelig) J. Slonimsky (1810-1904) invented a simple multiplication device to implement one of the theorems, which he had proven. The device could multiply every number of permitted length (i.e. the length permitted by the device-design) by every simple number. In other words, the device was something like a mechanical multiplication table. Later, the Slonimsky theorem was used for another simple multiplication device, namely for the calculating bars designed by Jofe. Both devices are interesting as examples of technical implementations of complicated mathematical ideas rather than as mechanical innovations." (Trogemann, Computing in Russia, P. 29).

Dansk oplysningsfilosofi 1700-1800). - Bibl. Danica I:919.

Entire issue offered. [Hilbert:] Pp. 342-50. [Entire issue: Pp. 309-456]. First publication of Hilbert's fundamental and exceedingly important paper on real algebraic geometry. "In 1888, David Hilbert published an influential paper [the present] which became fundamental for real algebraic geometry, and which remains an inspiring source for research even today." (Pfister & Scheiderer). David Hilbert, one of the most influential mathematicians of the 19th and early 20th centuries, is probably best known for the "Hilbert Problems" - a list of twenty-three problems in mathematics all unsolved at the time, and several of them were very exceedingly influential for 20th century mathematics. He is regarded as one of the founders of proof theory and mathematical logic, as well as for being among the first to distinguish between mathematics and metamathematics."Hermann Weyl described his teacher Hilbert's style: "It is as if you were on a swift walk through a sunny open landscape; you look freely around, demarcation lines and connecting roads are pointed out to you, before you must brace yourself to climb the hill; then the path goes straight up." (Princeton Companion to Mathematics).
