Pp. 337-440 a. 1 engraved plate. (The entire issue offered (Heft 4). Fraunhofer's paper: Titlepage to vol. 40 and pp. 337-378. Clean and fine First edition of this importent paper where Fraunhofer analyzed diffration phenomena and interpretet them in terms of a wave theory of light, leading him to formulate the GRATING EQUATION. - "In the paper in 1823, Fraunhofer revealed his continued invstigation of diffraction gratings. Using a diamont point, he could rule up to 3,200 lines per Parish inch. He continued his study of the effect of oblique reays, developed formulations based on the wave conception, and calculated a revised set of wavelenghts for the major spectral lines. Thus, his earlier observations of the dark lines in the solar spectrum enabled him to make the highly precise measurements of dispersions; then his ude of the wave theory of light allowed him to derive, with suitable simplifications, the general formulation of the grating equation still in use today." (Reese V. Jenkins in DSB).

A stamp on titlepage otherwise fine and clean. Pp.69-87. [Entire volume: IV,412 pp]. First apperance (simultaneously printed in Philosophical Magazine) of a fundamental paper in the development of the Quantum Theory, as it here was set forth three fundamental ideas: 1. Slater's idea of 'a Virtual radiation field', 2. statistical conservation of energy and momentum, and 3. statistical independence of the processes of emission and absorption in distant atoms. (See Van der Waerden "Sources of Quantum Mechanics" No. 5)."In an effort to reconcile the particulate and wavelike properties of radiation, Bohr, Kramers, and Slater in 1924 formulated a new quantum theory of radiation. According to their hypothesis, momentum and energy-are conserved only statistically in interactions between radiation and matter." (DSB).The present paper became a great influence to Bothe and his Compton collisions and the Coincidence method which eventually resulted in him being awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics.

First printing of these 3 papers which represents Berzelius's discovery of Selenium. Berzelius "became a partner together with his friends Gahn and Palmstedt in the ownership of a factory near Gripsholm castle, manufacturing sulforic acid, vinegar, soap and white lead.During the summer of 1817 Berzelius spent an entire month supervising the manufacture. This lead to the discovery of a new elemen, Selenium, which he found in the form of a golden-brown sediment in the mud from the bottom of the lead chamber. This was an era when new elements could still be "scrabed of the walls....what had previously been known as "Swedish tellurium ore" was now found to be selenide of copper and silver with a 26 per cent selenium content." London, Printed by Taylor and Francis - Published by the Author, (1862-) 73 Folio. Papersize 54,5x36,5 cm. Lithographed and fully handcoloured. Two adults in a flowering bush. J. Gould & H.C. Richter, del. et lith. - Walter & Cohn, Imp. Fine and clean. The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.

Amperes' paper: pp. 390-411 and 2 folded engraved plates. First appearence of the paper in which Ampere describes his invention of the SOLENOID, the electro-magnetic device he used in his early electrodynamical experiments."A solenoid is a coil wound into a tightly packed helix. In physics, the term solenoid refers to a long, thin loop of wire, often wrapped around a metallic core, which produces a magnetic field when an electric current is passed through it. Solenoids are important because they can create controlled magnetic fields and can be used as electromagnets. The term solenoid refers specifically to a magnet designed to produce a uniform magnetic field in a volume of space (where some experiment might be carried out)."Poggendorff I, p. 29. - Ronalds, p. 10.

Tear to marbled paper of lower front board. Library stamps to pasted down front endpaper, verso of title-page, and last leaf. A few scattered brownspots, otherwise internally clean. X,253 pp. + errata. The first edition of Bopp's Vocalismus in which he sums up his critical thoughts and previously published articles on J. Grimm and Graff."It seems to me only an expression of the natural common feeling which binds us together as a Philological Society, to take some notice of the death of one of the greatest philologists of our time, without whose life and labours, indeed, the Science of Language might not have been, or at least might not have elevated itself so high as to deserve that title, so soon or so indisputably... Bopp must, more or less, directly or indirectly, be the teacher of all who at the present day study, not this language or that language, but Language itself..." (Russel Martineau, in: Portraits of Linguists. A Biographical Source Book for the History of Western Linguistics 1746-1963).During the time before Bopp, the languages of the antiquity, Greek, Latin and Hebrew, had provided the key for unlocking many of the mysteries of the modern languages of Europe and Western Asia. But the languages of the East that had been preserved in a larger sense were only beginning to be known; Bopp saw, as one of the first that these languages might be of even greater importance. Sanskrit, Bopp realized, was the language that might provide the general light that should be thrown on formative process of language, and together with the other known languages that had been investigated, Greek, Latin, Persian, and the Germanic languages, Sanskrit would be able to provide us with the final unity in the variety that are present in the Western languages. And thus, Bopp decided to go to Paris to study Sanskrit (Paris was the only place it could be done) in 1812. Bopp studied Sanskrit here for five years, and in fact, he was among the first pupils to study under Chézy, the holder of the very first chair of Sanskrit (1815), together with Wilhelm von Humboldt and A.W. Schlegel. It is thus during his studies here that he writes his first work, which turned out to be a work of breakthrough. "Following up the discovery of Sir William Jones (235) of the kinship of the Indo-European languages, and building upon the recognition by Rask (266) of the phonetic agreements of the Germanic language group, Bopp in this, his first publication, proved the exact correspondence of the construction of the verb in five main branches of Indo-European languages. He thereby established the science of comparative linguistics..." (PMM 275).His first publication was regarded as being a very important contribution to the science of linguistics, and it secured him the chair of Oriental Languages at the university of Berlin (1821-64).Bopp wrote and published very little, but that which he did publish has remained of the utmost importance to the development of the science of comparative linguistics. With his idea of tracing the common origin of the grammatical form of the five languages, a task that no one had attempted before him, and by analysing those forms, Bopp became the provider of the first dependable materials for a history of the languages compared."Bopp's importance lies in the fact that he was no mere grammarian but considered comparative philology to be an essential part of the history of civilization: out of their vocabulary he drew an accurate picture of the material and intellectual life of the earliest Indo-European people." (PMM 275).

Both works in "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", 5me Series - Tome IV. 572 pp. (The entire volume offered). Berthelot's works: pp. 5-131 a. 141-214 + pp. 445-537. Internally clean and fine. First appearance of this collection of Berthelot's famous memoirs on thermochemistry to which he turned his attention in 1865. In these lectures he introduced the concepts of 'exothermix' and 'endothermic'. He also intorduce his famous 3 principles - equivalence between internal and heat changes in chemical reactions, heat evolved or absorbed in a chemical change depends onlyon the initial and final states of the reactans and products, provided no external work is done, and "law of maximum work" which says that "every chemical change accomplished without the intervention of energy from outside tends towards the production of a body or system of bodies which produce the most heat". The principles of Thermochemistry given here Berthelot considered himself fundamental."In the 1860s Berthelot was done with synthesis and turned to thermochemistry, the study of the heat of chemical reactions. In some of his work he had unknowingly been anticipated by Hess, but he went much further. He devised a calorimeter within which he could measure the heat of chemical reactions and ran hundreds of determinations. This work along with that being conducted by Thomson threw the science of thermochemistry into high gear."(Asimov).
