Halle, Rengerschen Buchhandlung, 1802-(1803). Without wrappers as published in "Annalen der Physik. Herausgegeben von Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert", Bd. 10, Viertes Stück. (The entire issue offered (= Stück 4). Titlepage to vol. 10. Pp. 389-512 a. 1 engraved plate. + Extract from Ergänzungsheft zum Jahre 1802. (=Zweite Abhandlung). Volta's papers: pp. 421-449 a. pp. 497-520. Very light browning to 2. Abhandlung. First appearance in German of Volta's importent paper in which he describes the electrical forces that acts between the metal-plates in the Voltaic Pile. The German publication was printed in the same year as the Italian original "Sull' identita del Fluido Elettrico col Fluide Galvanico", 1802."A long memoir by Volta in two parts...reports that by measuring the electrometer deflections with different pairs of metals he found that the forces which drive the electric fluid...from the first metal to the second are: silver/copper 1, copper/iron 2, iron/thin 3, lead/tin 1, lead/zinc 5. Then the force for silver/zinc in immidiate contact is 12 (1+2+3+1+5), copper/tin 5 (= 3+2), iron/zinc 9 (5+1+3), etc. Thus 'the force or impulsion with which two metals act on the electric fluid is equal to the sum of the forces of the series of metals which stands between them, and...the electric force is the same as that which arises when the two extreme metals have no effect on the force of the latter'. This is the first statement of what Maxwell called 'Volta'slaw of contact electricity'..."(Partington IV, p.15.).

London, Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, 1821. Contemp. Hcalf. Minor scratches to spine. In: "Annals of Philosophy; or, Magazine of Chemistry, Mineralogy, Mechanics, Natural History... By Thomas Thomson.", New series Vol. I. VIII,479 pp. a. 7 engraved plates. (Entire volumes offered). Herapath's papers: pp. 273-293, 340-351 a. 401-416. First printing of these contoversial papers where Herapath revived the kinetic theory of gases. His theory was more or less neglected by the scientific community at his time. The kinetic theory remained dormant and forgotten after Euler's and Bernouilli's work "until 1816, when Herapath proposed a theory which is essential Bernoulli's. Unfortunately he chose to define temperature as being proportional to the momentum rather than the kinetic energy of molecules. Herapath was the first to show, more or less, that kinetic theory can provide simple explanations for the changes of state, diffusion, and the propagation of sound."(Trousdell "Essayas in the History of Mechanics", pp. 283 ff.).

XV,(3),352 pp. plus 1 lithographic folding map of Turkistan; hand colored in outline, and 12 wood engraved plates. First German edition (an English edition was published in 1864). "This was the first journey of its kind undertaken by a Western European; and since it was necessary to avoid suspicion, Vámbéry could not take even fragmentary notes, except by stealth. He returned to Europe in 1864. That following June, he paid a visit to London, where he was treated as a celebrity because of his daring adventures and knowledge of languages. That same year, he published his 'Travels in Central Asia', based on the few, furtive notes he was able to make while traveling with the dervishes. Returning to Hungary, Vámbéry was appointed professor of Oriental languages at the University of Budapest in 1865, retiring in 1905." - Wikipedia.

lyn43911
(Paris, Crochard, 1824). Without wrappers. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago.", tome 27, Cahier 3. Pp. 225-336. (Entire issue offered). Fourier's paper: pp. 236-281. First printing of this importent paper dealing with the "Green-House-Effect". It is the second paper from 1824 in which Fourier investigates the connection between the temperature of the earth and radiation. Fourier's analysis in these two papers is widely recognized as the first proposal of what is now known as the greenhouse effect theory. In the 1820s Fourier calculated that an object the size of the Earth and at its distance from the Sun should be considerably colder than the planet actually is if warmed only by the effects of incoming solar radiation. He examined various possible sources of the additional observed heat in articles published in 1824 (the paper offered is the second of the papers published 1824) and 1827. While he ultimately suggested that interstellar radiation might be responsible for a large portion of the additional warmth, Fourier's consideration of the possibility that the Earth's atmosphere might act as an insulator of some kind is widely recognized as the first proposal of what is now known as the greenhouse effect theory.

(4), 451-60 + 1 folded engraved plate. First appearance of Timothy Lane's description of his discharging electrometer. The instrument became popular in electrotherapy and was used to limit the power of the electrical discharge. (Heilbron, Electricity in the 17th & 18th Centuries).

This paper had the blessing of Niels Bohr; also Pauli, who wasin Copenhagen when the paper was completed, agreed with its overall content. The central goal of the paper was to formulate what Bohr called 'the stress (constraint), which is not analogous to the action of external forces' and to derive quantitative conclusions from it."
