Leipzig & Wolfenbüttel, Meisner, 1729. 8vo. In a very nice contemporary Cambridge-style mirror binding with five raised bands and richly gilt spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Corners bumped. A very nice and clean copy. (10), 341, (50) pp. The rare first German translation of De la Mothe’s edifying treatise on humility and humbleness. Claude Grostete de la Mothe (1647–1713), ”theologian, was born at Orleans in 1647, and was the son of Jacques Grostête de la Buffière, a member of the Paris bar, and an elder of the protestant church at Charenton. He assumed, according to custom, the name of one of his father's estates. He graduated in law at Orleans University 1664, and in the following year joined the Paris bar; but in 1676, having abandoned law for theology, he became protestant pastor at Lizy, near Melun. In 1682 he accepted a call to Rouen, but returned to Lizy on finding that no successor could be obtained, and was secretary of the provincial synod held there. On the revocation of the edict of Nantes in 1685, he sought refuge in London with his wife. Marie Berthe, daughter of a Paris banker, was naturalised in 1668, and was minister first of the Swallow Street, and then, from 1694 till his death, of the Savoy Church. In 1712 he was elected a member of the Berlin Royal Society; in 1713 he collected subscriptions in England for the Huguenots released from the French galleys; and he died in London 30 Sept. 1713. La Mothe's father abjured protestantism, and his brother, Marin des Mahis, an ex-pastor become a canon of Orleans. La Mothe published 'Two Discourses relating to the Divinity of our Saviour,' London, 1693, 'The Inspiration of the New Testament asserted and explained,' London, 1694, and several treatises in French, one of them in defence of the Camisard prophets.” (DNB).

Despite Siemens being the one credited for the invention, Wilde was the first to publish a paper describing it; this was communicated to the Royal Society by Michael Faraday in 1866.Joseph Sidebotham (1824-1882) was the first to practice photography in Manchester and of the most important local photographers in general. His interest was, however, not confined to photography; he was an amateur botanist, entomologist and astronomer. London, Edward Stanford, 1879. Without wrappers in "Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society and monthly Record of Geography", April issue with titlepage to vol. 1, 1879. Pp.(2), 225-288 a. 2 folded maps. Cayley's paper: pp. 259-261 Fitrst appearance of Cayley's famous paper on the Four-Colour-Problem"The four-colour map problem (to prove that on any map only four colours are needed to separate countries) is celebrated in mathematics. It resisted the attempts of able mathematicians for over a century and when it was successfully proved in 1976 the ‘computer proof’ was controversial: it did not allow scrutiny in the conventional way. At the height of his influence in 1878, Arthur Cayley had drawn attention to the problem at a meeting of the London Mathematical Society and it was duly ‘announced’ in print. (the paper offered). He made a short contribution himself and he encouraged the young A. B. Kempe to publish a paper on the subject. Though ultimately unsuccessful, the work of Cayley and Kempe in the late 1870s brought valuable insights..... Francis Galton is revealed as the ‘go-between’ in suggesting Cayley publish his observations in Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society." (Tony Crilly). The Four-Colour-Theorem was proved in 1976 by Kenneth Appel and Wolfgang Haken. It was the first major mathematical theorem to be proved using a computer.

Leipzig, B.G. Teubner, 1882. Contemp. hcloth. IV,201,(1) pp., textfigs. At end inserted "Anfangsgründe der beschreibende Geometrie nebst einem Anhang über Kartenprojection. Ein Leitfaden beim Unterricht an höheren Lehranstalten von Wilhelm Mink." Orig. printed wrappers. 47 pp. textfigs. Internally fine and clean. Scarce first edition of this groundbreaking work. "The work on non-Euclidean geometry had brought the realization that geometries are man-made constructions bearing upon physical space but not necessarely exact idealization of it. This fact implied that several major changes had to be incorporated in any axiomatic approach to geometry. These were recognized and stressed by Moritz Pasch (1843-1930), who was the first to make major contributions to the foundations of geometry. His "Vorlesungen über neuere Geometrie", (the offered item) is a groundbreaking work." (Morris Kline)."Pasch initiated the axiomatic method, although the foundational developments of his time were against this point of view. Thus Cantor's striking discoveries were based, from an axiomatic point of view, on nothing...As late as 1903 Frege poked fun of at the axiomatic method as presented in Hilbert's "rundlagen der Geometrie....particularly Peano continued Pasch's work. In 1889 Peano published both his exposition of geometry, following Pasch, and his treatment of number...Pasch played a crucial role in the innovation of the axiomatic methode. This method, with contributions from logic and algebra, is a central feature of twentieth-century mathematics." (DSB). - Sommerville "Bibliography of Non-Euclidean Geometry", p. 67 (1882).
