Titlepage to vol. 12. Pp. 1-116 a. 1 engraved plate. (The entire issue offered). Berzelius' paper: pp. 37-89. First German edition of this classic paper in chemistry in which Berzelius presented his system of nomenclature to the scientific world. The paper was first preseted in French "Essay sur la nomenclature chimique" in Journal de Physique the year before (1811)."Of his contributions, moreover, to the development of the atomic theory and the advancement of chemical science, not the least valuable was the introduction of a chemical symbolism which, with slight modifivcations, is in use at the present day. By giving his symbols a quantitative meaning - the symbol of an element representing one atomic proportion by weight - it was possible "to show briefly and clearly the number of elementary atoms in each compound and, after the determination of their relative weights, present the results of each analysis in a si8mple and easely retained manner.". This symbolism was speedily adopted on the Continent but, en England, only after some considerable time."(Findley "A Hundred Year of Chemistry", p. 14). - Holmberg, Bibliografi öfver Berzelius, 1812:7).

GOULD, JOHN.

lyn43978
London, Printed by Taylor and Francis - Published by the Author, (1862-) 73. Folio. Papersize 54,5x36,5 cm. Lithographed and fully handcoloured. Two birds, male and female on branches with fruits. J. Gould & H.C. Richter, del. et lith. - Walter, Imp. Fine and clean. The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.

The Arnauld family became its patrons and the abbey's subsequent history was directed by a number of the members of that family. PLANCK, MAX. - TOWARDS THE QUANTUM THEORY
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn41482
Berlin, 1897. 4to. Uncut and unopened in original printed wrappers. Fresh copy, fine and clean. Near mint. The entire "Heft" II: Pp. 35-81. Planck's paper pp.35-46. Max Planck is considered to be the founder of the quantum theory and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918. "Über irreversible Strahlungsvorgänge" is a mathematical description of the electromagnetic radiation emitted from a black-body."Über irreversible Strahlungsvorgänge was published in five parts in the period 1897-1901, the present volume being number 1."With the Kirchhoff-Wien-Boltzmann work as a background, Max Planck began his attack on the black-body problem in 1897. He labored under the erroneous impression for some time that Wien's formula was the only one which harmonized with the second law of thermodynamics. The experiments on black-bodies due to Lummer and Pringsheim, Rubens and Kurlbaum forced him from that position." (Planck, Max. Catalogue 258, Interlibrum Vaduz) "I had already been struggling with the problem of the equilibrium of matter and radiation for some years without success; I knew the problem is of fundamental significance for Physics." The significance was unparallelled, when he in December 1900 delivered a paper entitled "On the Theory of the Energy Distribution Law in the Normal Spectrum" before the German Physical Society, which today is considered the birth of quantum physics. The present volume constitutes a precursor to this work. - Akademie No 33
