First edition of Ångströms scarce doctoral dissertation, dealing with the optics of conical refraction.Ångström was one of the early formulators of the science of modern spectroscopy; he wrote extensively on terrestrial magnetism, the conduction of heat, and especially spectroscopy. He published a monumental map of the normal solar spectrum that expressed the length of light waves in units of one ten-millionth of a millimeter, a unit of length now known as the angstrom. He discovered that hydrogen is present in the sun's atmosphere, and he was the first to examine the spectrum of the aurora borealis.

First appearence of the paper in which Ampere describes his invention of the SOLENOID, the electro-magnetic device he used in his early electrodynamical experiments."A solenoid is a coil wound into a tightly packed helix. In physics, the term solenoid refers to a long, thin loop of wire, often wrapped around a metallic core, which produces a magnetic field when an electric current is passed through it. Solenoids are important because they can create controlled magnetic fields and can be used as electromagnets. The term solenoid refers specifically to a magnet designed to produce a uniform magnetic field in a volume of space (where some experiment might be carried out)."Poggendorff I, p. 29. - Ronalds, p. 10.

A stamp on titlepage otherwise fine and clean. Pp.69-87. [Entire volume: IV,412 pp]. First apperance (simultaneously printed in Philosophical Magazine) of a fundamental paper in the development of the Quantum Theory, as it here was set forth three fundamental ideas: 1. Slater's idea of 'a Virtual radiation field', 2. statistical conservation of energy and momentum, and 3. statistical independence of the processes of emission and absorption in distant atoms. (See Van der Waerden "Sources of Quantum Mechanics" No. 5)."In an effort to reconcile the particulate and wavelike properties of radiation, Bohr, Kramers, and Slater in 1924 formulated a new quantum theory of radiation. According to their hypothesis, momentum and energy-are conserved only statistically in interactions between radiation and matter." (DSB).The present paper became a great influence to Bothe and his Compton collisions and the Coincidence method which eventually resulted in him being awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics.

EÖTVÖS, ROLAND v. (LORÁND). - ESTABLISHING THE PROPORTIONALLITY BETWEEN GRAVITATIONAL AND INERTIAL MASS.

(Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1896). Without wrappers as issued in "Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg. von G. Wiedemann.", Neue Folge Bd. 59, Zehntes (No 10 1896). Entire issue offered. Pp. 193-416 a. 1 folded plate. Eötvös's paper: pp. 354-400 a. 15 large textillustrations, depicting his experimental apparatus. Clean and fine. First appearance of Eötvös's main paper on gravitational phenomena, which became the subject of his lifework, and in which he showed experimentally, that the inertial mass and the gravitational mass are proportional, a discovery that became ONE OF THE BUILDING STONES OF THE THEORY OF GENERAL RELATIVITY."The second extremely important application of the Eötvös balance involved a predetermination of the rate of gravitational acceleration for different bodies. It had been known from earlier work that all bodies fall with the same acceleration (in a vacuum), but the best previous determinations yielded only a limited accuracy. In response to a prize announcement by the University of Gottingen, Eötvös and his collaborators followed up his early measurements on this subject. The new measurements provided not merely a more accurate proof of a principle believed right until then, but much more: his results, proving that gravitational mass and inertial mass are equivalent, the possible deviation being about five parts in 109, became one of the building stones of the theory of general relativity. The experiment proves the “weak” form of the principle of equivalence, which states that the trajectory of a test particle, under the influence of gravitational fields only, depends only on its initial position and velocity, not on its mass and nature. Later confirmation of his results (during the last fifty years) reduced the possible deviation from perfect equivalence by a factor of 1,000." (DSB, IV, 379 ff.).

(Berlin, Stockholm, Paris, Almqvist & Wiksell, 1901). 4to. Without wrappers as extracted from"Acta Mathematica. Hrsg. von G. Mittag-Leffler", vol. 24, pp. 1-88. First edition. "After Poinceré, the most significant work on solutions of equations of the form dy/dx= P(x,y)/Q (x,y) is due to Ivar Bendixon (1861-1935). One of his major results (the offered paper) provides a criterion by means of which, in certain regions, one can show that no closed trajectory exists....The theorem now named after Poincaré and Bendixon, which is the latter's 1901 paper, provides a positive criterion for the existence of a periodic solution of (the above equation)." Lagrange's formula occupied numerous other mathematicians, including Arbogast, Parceval, Servois, Hindenburg and Bürgman....; and virtually every analyst of the nineteenth century considered the problem."
