New York, American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1954. 8vo. The entire volume XXXIII (Part I-II), 1954 of The Bell System Technical Journal bound in a nice full green cloth. Library stamp to free front end-paper and title page. Minor discolouring to extremities. Binding tight, clean and fresh. Also internally very nice and clean. Pp. 1309-1330. [Entire volume: 1400 pp.] First edition of this famous and influential paper, which described the process used for routing telephone calls over trunk lines. The article revealed the internal operation of the long distance switching system in use at that time. This information caused hackers and phone phreaks to develop the Blue Box which enabled them to make free long-distance calls. Among the more famous phreaks can be found the two Apple founders Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs. The use of the Blue Box developed into a sub-culture and many of its users ended up with jail sentences for hacking. The article is now widely regarded as being the most infamous article in The Bell System Techinal Journal.

London, Taylor & Francis, 1854. 8vo. Bound in contemporary half calf with gilt lettering and five raised bands in gilt to spine. In "Philosophical Magazine", Fourth Series, Vol. 7. 1854. Wear to extremities and stamp to title-page. Otherwise fine and clean. Pp. 40-47. (Entire volume: VII, (1), 536 pp. + 4 engraved plates.) First edition The first abstract definition and treatment of the concept of a group. Lagrange and Galois had, among others, already used group theoretic methods for solving polynomial equations; however, they considered only particular examples of groups, e.g., roots. It was Cayley, who first gave an abstract definition of groups as a collection of symbols equipped with an operation. In this paper he also proved that every group is isomorphic to a group of permutations, i.e. Cayley's Theorem, and he introduced the so called "Cayley Tables".

lyn49595
(Paris, Bachelier), 1851. 4to. Without wrappers. In "Comptes rendus hebdomadaires des séances de l’Académie des sciences", Vol. 33, No 23. Pp. (631-) 648. (Entire issue offered). Legray's paper: pp. 643-644. Clean and fine. First printing of a landmark paper in photography, introducing his invention of the waxed-paper process."Gustave Legray brought photograpy on paper to its culmination in the 1850s with the waxed-paper process. A struggling young artist..., Legray abandoned painting for photography around 1848, and with the financial backing of the Comte de Briges opened a portrai studio on the top floor of the same house as the Bisson brothers, in the Madelaine district. His reputation, however, was made not in the field of portraiture but as an architectural and landscape photographer. He also taught photography and "nearly all renowned photographers of the day have been his pupils". Legray devoted a good deal of time to experiments and wrote a number of manuals. His invention of the waxed-paper proces dates to before 25 Febr. 1851, but the manipulation was not published until the following December (the paper offered)..... The wxed-paper process was far more than a modification of the calotype, as can be seen from the substances used in oidizing paper - rice water, sugar of milk, iodide of potassium, cyanide of potassium, fluoride of potassium (to which was later added white honey and the white of some egg). Sensitizing was done with an acid solution of nitrate of silver and development took place with gallic acid.... The process took its name from the fact that the paper was waxed before iodizing, instead of merely after exposure, to facilitate printing." (Helmut E. R. K. Gernsheim).

Braunschweig, Vieweg & Sohn, 1914. Later full cloth. A stamp to the general titlepage. IX,1072;414 pp., textillustrations. "Verhandlungen der Deutschen Physikalischen Gesellschaft im Jahre 1914. Sechzehnter Jahrgang. Hrsg. von Karl Scheel." Einstein paper pp. 820-828. Internally clean and fine. The whole volume offered First edition. In this paper "Contributions to quantum theory" two considerations are given which are interrelated by a common goal, inasmuch as it is attempted to derive two of the most importent achievementss of quantum theory, viz. Planck's radiation law and Nernst's third law of thermodynamics, in a new manner. The proofs do not involve Boltzmann's equation and are thus based enterely on macroscopic thermodynamics. They do introduce, however, the quantum hupothesis. (Einstein points out that the alleged 'proofs' which try to derive the theorem of Nernst from the mere fact that the heat capacity of all substances goes to zero at absolute zero temterature, are not genuine). lyn54404
London, Cambridge University Press, 1822. 4to. In recent paper wrappers. Extracted from the "Transactions of the Cambridge Philosophical Society", Volume 1, bound with the title-page of the volume. Fine and clean. (2), (63)-76 First appearance of Babbage paper on the notation employed in the Calculus of Functions."Babbage's major Contribution to mathematics was his calculus of functions, which he became interested in as early as 1809 and continued to develop during his years at Cambridge. Babbage presents his major ideas on the subject in the above two papers, published in the "Philosophical Transactions" in 1815 and 1816. "It can be said with some assurance that no mathematician prior to Babbage had treated the calculus of functions in such systematic way...Babbage must be given full credit as the inventor of a distinct and importent branch of mathematics" (Dubbey 1978, 90). Elsewhere Dubby states that his new scheme would serve as a generalized calculus to include all problems capable of analytical formulation, and it is possible to see here a hint of the inspiration for his concept of THE ANALYTICAL ENGINE. While the work on the engines and his other scientific, social and political activities caused him virtually to abandon mathematical research at the age of thirty, the calculus of functions was the area he often yearned to continue. In fact the calculus of functions was not taken up by other workers, and it is the aspect of Babbage's mathematical work that modern mathematicians find most fascinating (Dubbey 1989, 18-19)." Tübingen, Cotta'schen Buchhandlung, 1803. 8vo. Uncut in the original wrappers. Most of spine-paper missing, but cords tight. Internally nice and clean, and with a few light pencilmarks. Old owner's name to title-page (dated 1900). IV, 326, (1) pp. First edition of Schelling's important treatise, in which he in 14 lectures put forward his thoughts about the academic education in the differenrt subjects at the universities. He also gives a synopsis of his own philosophy. Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling (1775 - 1854), German philosopher and educator and a major figure of German idealism in the post-Kantian development in German philosophy. Living in Tübingen he became a friend of Hegel and Hölderlin. During his professorship at Jena in 1798 he was in close contact with leading figures of Romanticism and was also co-editor with Hegel of the Critical Journal of Philosophy. "Vorlesungen über die Methode des akademischen Studiums" is Schelling's Encyclopedia of philosophical sciences, according to which philosophy is the presupposition for all the special sciences. In it he argues that the task of the university is to properly hold the balancing relationship between the absolute knowledge and special knowledge.Schelling's lectures from 1803 give no didactic statements, but discuss, justify and emphasize the role and importance of the methodical scientific thinking for the free and general social education. Wilhelm Von Humboldt's model concerning education, Prussian education system, which is based on the idea of freedom and the principle of unity, instituted compulsory attendance, specific training for teachers, national testing for all students, national curriculum set for each grade and mandatory kindergarten, is large built upon Schelling's ideas presented in the present work.

HERSCHEL, WILLIAM. - THE BASIS OF INTERFEROMETRIC IMAGING IN ASTRONOMY.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn45883
(London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1805). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1805 - Part I. Pp. 31-64 and 1 engraved plate. Clean and fine. First appearance of an importent paper, founding the metric of interstellar space. It was the contemporous discoveries of the first minor planets, ceres in 1801, Pallas in 1802 and Juno in 1803, that prompted Herschel to investigate the origin of the spurious diameters of stars. "Were their apparent diameters as real as those of planets or spurious as for stars? To address this question Herschel conducted an extensive series of experiments in his garden in Slough, examining through his telescope small globules of differing sizes and materials placed in a tree some 800 ft (ca. 244 m) away (Herschel 1805). His observations showed that for the smallest globules the diameters were all spurious and all of the same size. Furthermore, he found that, if just the inner part of the aperture of the telescope were used, the spurious diameters, whether of globules or of stars, were larger. If the whole aperture was employed, the diameters were smaller, and if only an outer annular aperture was used the diameters were smaller still. This experimental discovery that unfilled apertures can be used to obtain high angular resolution remains today the essential basis for interferometric imaging in astronomy (in particular Aperture Masking Interferometry). The theoretical justification of this result came with Airy's analysis of the diffraction pattern of a circular aperture 30 years later (Airy 1835), and it took a further 30 years before the idea of using multiple apertures was developed. In an early study the Reverend W. R. Dawes noted that he had `frequently found great advantage from the use of a perforated whole aperture' and that when observing Venus this produced `a central image of the planet perfectly colourless, and very sharply dened' (Dawes 1866). But it was left to Fizeau, in his submission to the Commission for the Prix Bordin the following year, to remark on `une relation remarquable et n´ecessaire entre la dimension des franges et celle de la source lumineuse' and suggest that by using an interferometric combination of light from two separated slits `il deviendra possible d'obtenir quelques donn´ees nouvelles sur les diametres angulaires de ces astres' (Fizeau 1868)."
