lyn62255
Hafnia (Copenhagen), Gøde, 1662. 4to. In blindstamped vellum with title in contemporary hand to spine. Binding with wear and soiling. Front free end-paper with 14-line note in neat contemporary hand. Previous owner's name in contemporary hand. Leaf a2-4 with tear. With occassional browning and annotations throughout. (8), 352, (6) pp. The uncommon first edition of Bircherod’s important and highly influential systematic theological compendium. In the preface, Bircherod describes the book as a new overview (Synopsis) of orthodox Christian theology, new in form, not in content. His method was meant to address two main problems: attacks on theology and disorganized theological teaching. To solve this, he paired correct definitions with opposing heretical views and added all relevant Scripture references for clarity. Jens Bircherod (1658 – 1708) was a Danish bishop, professor in theology and hebrew. Biblioteca Danica I, 185Not in Thesaurus

WÖHLER, FRIEDRICH. - THE BEGINNING OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn44898
(Paris, Crochard, 1828). 8vo. Without wrappers. Extract from 'Annales de Chimie et de Physique', Series 2 - Volume 37. Pp. 330-334. First appearance in French of this milestone paper, marking the beginnings of organic chemistry, in which Wöhler describes how he managed to synthezise urea from cyanate of ammonia. The French version here is translated from the German paper "Ueber künstliche Bildung des Harnstoffs.", which was issued the same year (1828). This broke down the old distinction between organic and inorganic substances. "This was the first synthesis of an organic compound, and this accomplishment is generally regarded as the beginning of organic chemistry."(Sparrow "Milestones of Science", p.37). The discovery destroyed the vitalistic theory which held that organic compounds could be produced only by living organisms, and led eventually to the brilliant results that have been achieved in attempts to synthesize other organic compounds.Dibner: Heralds of Science, no. 45. - Sparrow: Milestones of Science, no. 197. - Garrison & Morton, no. 671. DALTON, JOHN. - LAW OF MULTIPLE PROPORTIONS.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn43644
(Halle, Rengerschen Buchhandlung, 1807). Without wrappers as published in "Annalen der Physik. Herausgegeben von Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert", Bd. 27, Zwölftes Stück. (The entire issue offered (= Stück 12). Pp. 369-488 a. 1 folded engraved plate. Dalton's papers: pp. 369-387 and pp. 388-399. First appearance in German of two importent papers on the multiple proportions of gases, announcing the first example of the Law of multiple proportions. The first paper was read to the Manchester Society in 1802, but first published in 1805. It is Dalton's first chemical memoir, and it "disclosed the insight obtained through study of the combinations of oxygen with nitrous gas, into the LAW OF MULTIPLE PROPORTIONS."(D.N.B)."One thing Dalton did in order to provide support for his heavely attacked theory of mixed gases was to begin an experimental inquiry into the proportions of the various gases in the atmosphere. This inquiry accidentally raised the whole question of the solubility of gases in water. By 12. Novwember 1802 he had discovered enough to read to the Manchester Society his paper "On the Proportion of Several Gases or Elastic Fluids..." (the paper offered). When read, although not when published, it contained the staement that carbon dioxide "is held in water, not by chemical affinity, but merely by the pressure of the gas...on the surface, forcing it into the pores of water.". The researches on solubility thus led to an extension of his mechanical ideas."(DSB III, p. 541).Smyth No. 36 a. 37. (German version).

MENDELEJEFF, (MENDELÉEV, MENDELEYEV, MENDELÉEFF), DIMITRY IVANOVICH. - THE DECISIVE CONFIRMATION OF MENDELEEV'S PERIODIC TABLE OFTHE ELEMENTS.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn47272
Paris, Gauthier-Villars, 1875. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome 81, No 21. Pp. (909-) 992. With titlepage to vol. 81. A stamp to verso of titlepage, showing on recto. Mendelejeff's paper: pp. 969-972. First apperance of this importent paper which established that Gallium is identical with Eka-aluminum (the missing element between Aluminum and Indium) in Mendelejeff's periodic table. The properties of the new element corresponded well with those predicted. A bitter contorversy was raised between the discoverer of Gallium, Lecog de Boisbaudran and Mendelejeff. "The discovery of the three elements predicted by Mendeleev was, however, of decisive importance in the acceptance of his law. In 1875 Lecoq de Boisbaudran, knowing nothing of Mendeleev’s work, discovered by spectroscopic methods a new metal, which he named gallium. Both in the nature of its discovery and in a number of its properties gallium coincided with Mendeleev’s prediction for eka-aluminum, but its specific weight at first seemed to be less than predicted. Hearing of the discovery, Mendeleev sent to France "Zametka po povodu otkrytia gallia" (the paper offered) ("Note on the Occasion of the Discovery of Gallium"), in which he insisted that gallium was in fact his eka-aluminum. Although Lecoq de Boisbaudran objected to this interpretation, he made a second determination of the specific weight of gallium and confirmed that such was indeed the case. From that moment the periodic law was no longer a mere hypothesis, and the scientific world was astounded to note that Mendeleev, the theorist, had seen the properties of a new element more clearly than the chemist who had empirically discovered it. From this time, too, Mendeleev’s work came to be more widely known;"(DSB).Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1875 C.

Halle, Rengerschen Buchhandlung, 1802-(1803). Without wrappers as published in "Annalen der Physik. Herausgegeben von Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert", Bd. 10, Viertes Stück. (The entire issue offered (= Stück 4). Titlepage to vol. 10. Pp. 389-512 a. 1 engraved plate. + Extract from Ergänzungsheft zum Jahre 1802. (=Zweite Abhandlung). Volta's papers: pp. 421-449 a. pp. 497-520. Very light browning to 2. Abhandlung. First appearance in German of Volta's importent paper in which he describes the electrical forces that acts between the metal-plates in the Voltaic Pile. The German publication was printed in the same year as the Italian original "Sull' identita del Fluido Elettrico col Fluide Galvanico", 1802."A long memoir by Volta in two parts...reports that by measuring the electrometer deflections with different pairs of metals he found that the forces which drive the electric fluid...from the first metal to the second are: silver/copper 1, copper/iron 2, iron/thin 3, lead/tin 1, lead/zinc 5. Then the force for silver/zinc in immidiate contact is 12 (1+2+3+1+5), copper/tin 5 (= 3+2), iron/zinc 9 (5+1+3), etc. Thus 'the force or impulsion with which two metals act on the electric fluid is equal to the sum of the forces of the series of metals which stands between them, and...the electric force is the same as that which arises when the two extreme metals have no effect on the force of the latter'. This is the first statement of what Maxwell called 'Volta'slaw of contact electricity'..."(Partington IV, p.15.).

Leipzig, Breitkopf & Härtel, 1883. Contemp. hcalf. Raised bands, gilt spine, titlelabel with gilt lettering. X,245,(1) pp. Internally fine and clean. Scarce first edition of this importent work which is a large extension of Meyer's classic paper of 1870, in which he independently of Mendeleev, discovered that the properties of the elements are a periodic function of (or vary in a periodic manner with) the atomic weight - the Periodic Table."The significance of atomic weights in the demonstration of chemical periodicity, and the suspicion that some atomic weights were not accurate, led Meyer and Seubert to examine critically and to recalculate all atomic weights then considered importent. Their study was published in 1883 (the work offered). All atomic weights were referred to the standard of unity for the atomic weight of hydrogen, a standard that Meyer championed.....In 1903 the newly created International Commission of Atomic Weeights decided to publish parallel tables based on H=1 and O=16, a practice followed for many years."(DSB IX, pp. 351-352).
