WÖHLER, FRIEDRICH. - THE BEGINNING OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn44898
(Paris, Crochard, 1828). 8vo. Without wrappers. Extract from 'Annales de Chimie et de Physique', Series 2 - Volume 37. Pp. 330-334. First appearance in French of this milestone paper, marking the beginnings of organic chemistry, in which Wöhler describes how he managed to synthezise urea from cyanate of ammonia. The French version here is translated from the German paper "Ueber künstliche Bildung des Harnstoffs.", which was issued the same year (1828). This broke down the old distinction between organic and inorganic substances. "This was the first synthesis of an organic compound, and this accomplishment is generally regarded as the beginning of organic chemistry."(Sparrow "Milestones of Science", p.37). The discovery destroyed the vitalistic theory which held that organic compounds could be produced only by living organisms, and led eventually to the brilliant results that have been achieved in attempts to synthesize other organic compounds.Dibner: Heralds of Science, no. 45. - Sparrow: Milestones of Science, no. 197. - Garrison & Morton, no. 671. lyn60798
London, 1750. 8vo. In a nice contemporary full sprinkled calf binding with five raised bands and richly gilt spine. All edges coloured in red. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Corners bumped and head and foot of spine slightly chipped. Internally very fine and clean, a nice copy. (4), VII, (1), 255 pp. First French translation of Bolingbroke’s “Letters on the Spirit of Patriotism”, originally published the year before in 1749. The letters reflect his ideas on patriotism, the role of the monarch, and the state of political parties during his time. Henry Saint-John, Viscount Bolingbroke (1678-1751) was a prominent English statesman and philosopher. He was known for his involvement in British politics during the early 18th century, serving as Secretary of State and later as a key figure in the Tory party. Bolingbroke was a skilled orator and writer, contributing significantly to political discourse through his speeches and writings. He is particularly remembered for his role in the negotiations leading to the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, which ended the War of the Spanish Succession. Despite his political successes, Bolingbroke's career was marked by controversy and exile due to his shifting allegiances and opposition to the Hanoverian succession. He spent several years in exile in France before being pardoned and allowed to return to England, where he continued to be involved in political and philosophical debates until his death.

DIRAC, P.A.M. - THE ALGEBRA OF QUANTUM MECHANICS.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn46991
London, Roayl Society, 1926. Royal 8vo. Full cloth. Gilt lettering to spine. In: "Proceedings of the Royal Society". Series A, Vol. 111. V,753,LIII pp., textillustr. and plates. (Entire volume offered). First appearance of these papers constituting Dirac's own theory of quantum mechanics."Dirac wanted to establish an algebra for quantum variables, or, as he now termed them, q-numbers... He wanted his q-number algebra to be a general and purely mathematical theory that could then be applied to problem of physics. Although it soon turned out that q-number algebra was equivalent to matrix mechanics, in 1926 Dirac's theory was developed as an original alternative to both wave mechanics and matric mechanics. It was very much Dirac's own theory, and he stuck to it without paying much attention to what went on inmatrix mechanics... In the summer of 1926, Dirac published a new and very general version of q-number algebra, this timepresented as a purely mathematical theory. In this paper (offered here) he did not refer to physics at all... The work had little impact on the physics community but seems to have been appreciated by those who cultivated the mathematical aspects of quantum physics. Most of the results obtained by Dirac in his paper "The Elimination of the Nodes in Quantum Mechanics" had been found earlier by the German theorists using a method of matric mechanics, but Dirac was able to improve on some of the results and deduce them from his own system of quantum mechanics."(Helge Kragh).
