Leipzig, J.A. Barth, 1912. Bound in two contemp. hcalf, richly gilt spine and one later full cloth. A library stamp on the first volume. "Annalen der Physik. Vierte Folge. Band 37 (und) 38. Hrsg. von W. Wien und M. Planck." VIII,1048;VIII,1064 pp., 5+8 plates. Einstein papers: pp. 832-38 (vol.37), pp. 881-84 (Nachtrag vol. 38); pp. 443-458 (vol. 38); p. 888 (vol. 38); pp. 1059-1064 (vol. 38); Planck: pp. 642-656. Internally fine and clean. Both volumes offered. All papers first edition. In the first paper "Thermodynamical derivation of the photochemical equivalence", Einstein calls "the law of photochemical equivalence" the statement that the decomposition of one gram equivalent of any substance by a photochemical proces demands the radiation energy of 'Nhv' (where N=the Avogadro number). In this paper he demonstrates how this law is deducible by purely thermodynamical arguments, if certain olausible assumotions are made. (Lanzos). - The second paper "Concerning the theory of a static gravitational field" states that the 'equivalence hypothesis' permits us to come to very definite conclusions about the behaviour of a static gravitational field.. - The next Einstein paper gives an answer to J. Stark, as Stark claimed priority to the photochemical equivalence law. - In the last paper "Relativity and Gravitation. Reply to a remark of M. Abraham" Einstein elaborates his answer to the critique of M. Abraham. - Weil Nos 46 (1-2) a. 48. - Planck, Akademie No 95.

Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn49100
Edinburgh, Nelson and Sons, 1952-53. 8vo. Contemp. hcloth. Tome-and titlelabels with gilt lettering. In: "The British Journal for the Philosophy of Science", Vol. III (May 1952 to February 1953). XIV,394 pp. Entire volume offered. Stamps to foot of titlepage and a few other pages. Schrödinger's papers: pp. 109-123 a. 233-242. Clean and fine. First printing of these importent papers on the philosophy of Quantum physics. "If we have to go on with these damned quantum jumps, then I'm sorry that I ever got involved." (E.Schrodinger)."In it he contrasts the smooth evolution of the Schrodinger wavefunction with the erratic behaviour of the picture by which the wavefunction is usually supplemented, or 'interpreted', in the minds of most physicists. He objects in particular to the notion of 'stationary states', and above all to 'quantum jumping' between those states. He regards these concepts as hangovers from the old Bohr quantum theory, of 1913, and entirely unmotivated by anything in the mathematics of the new theory of 1926. (J.S. Bell).

Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn47933
Paris, Crochard, 1832. Contemp. hcalf. Spine gilt. Light wear along edges. Stamps to verso of titlepage. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", 2e Series, vol. 51. (Entire volume offered). 448 pp. a. 1 folded engraved plate. Faraday's letter: pp. 404-434. Internally clean and fine. First printing of Faraday's famous letter to Gay-Lussac in which he claim to be the discoverer of electro-magnetic induction, analysed the results of the Italian philosophers, pointing out their errors, and defending himself from what he regarded as imputations on his character. The style of this letter is unexceptionable, for Faraday could not write otherwise than as a gentleman; but the letter shows that had he willed it he could have hit hard. The letter was later translated into English and published in "Philosophical Magazine" in 1840 under the title "On Magneto-electric Induction"."In 1831, seemingly out of nowhere, came the discovery of electromagnetic induction and the beginning of the experimental researches in electricity which were to lead Faraday to the discovery of the laws of electrochemistry, specific inductive capacity, the Faraday effect, and the foundations of classical field theory." (DSB).

Tear to marbled paper of lower front board. Library stamps to pasted down front endpaper, verso of title-page, and last leaf. A few scattered brownspots, otherwise internally clean. X,253 pp. + errata. The first edition of Bopp's Vocalismus in which he sums up his critical thoughts and previously published articles on J. Grimm and Graff."It seems to me only an expression of the natural common feeling which binds us together as a Philological Society, to take some notice of the death of one of the greatest philologists of our time, without whose life and labours, indeed, the Science of Language might not have been, or at least might not have elevated itself so high as to deserve that title, so soon or so indisputably... Bopp must, more or less, directly or indirectly, be the teacher of all who at the present day study, not this language or that language, but Language itself..." (Russel Martineau, in: Portraits of Linguists. A Biographical Source Book for the History of Western Linguistics 1746-1963).During the time before Bopp, the languages of the antiquity, Greek, Latin and Hebrew, had provided the key for unlocking many of the mysteries of the modern languages of Europe and Western Asia. But the languages of the East that had been preserved in a larger sense were only beginning to be known; Bopp saw, as one of the first that these languages might be of even greater importance. Sanskrit, Bopp realized, was the language that might provide the general light that should be thrown on formative process of language, and together with the other known languages that had been investigated, Greek, Latin, Persian, and the Germanic languages, Sanskrit would be able to provide us with the final unity in the variety that are present in the Western languages. And thus, Bopp decided to go to Paris to study Sanskrit (Paris was the only place it could be done) in 1812. Bopp studied Sanskrit here for five years, and in fact, he was among the first pupils to study under Chézy, the holder of the very first chair of Sanskrit (1815), together with Wilhelm von Humboldt and A.W. Schlegel. It is thus during his studies here that he writes his first work, which turned out to be a work of breakthrough. "Following up the discovery of Sir William Jones (235) of the kinship of the Indo-European languages, and building upon the recognition by Rask (266) of the phonetic agreements of the Germanic language group, Bopp in this, his first publication, proved the exact correspondence of the construction of the verb in five main branches of Indo-European languages. He thereby established the science of comparative linguistics..." (PMM 275).His first publication was regarded as being a very important contribution to the science of linguistics, and it secured him the chair of Oriental Languages at the university of Berlin (1821-64).Bopp wrote and published very little, but that which he did publish has remained of the utmost importance to the development of the science of comparative linguistics. With his idea of tracing the common origin of the grammatical form of the five languages, a task that no one had attempted before him, and by analysing those forms, Bopp became the provider of the first dependable materials for a history of the languages compared."Bopp's importance lies in the fact that he was no mere grammarian but considered comparative philology to be an essential part of the history of civilization: out of their vocabulary he drew an accurate picture of the material and intellectual life of the earliest Indo-European people." (PMM 275).

Both works in "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", 5me Series - Tome IV. 572 pp. (The entire volume offered). Berthelot's works: pp. 5-131 a. 141-214 + pp. 445-537. Internally clean and fine. First appearance of this collection of Berthelot's famous memoirs on thermochemistry to which he turned his attention in 1865. In these lectures he introduced the concepts of 'exothermix' and 'endothermic'. He also intorduce his famous 3 principles - equivalence between internal and heat changes in chemical reactions, heat evolved or absorbed in a chemical change depends onlyon the initial and final states of the reactans and products, provided no external work is done, and "law of maximum work" which says that "every chemical change accomplished without the intervention of energy from outside tends towards the production of a body or system of bodies which produce the most heat". The principles of Thermochemistry given here Berthelot considered himself fundamental."In the 1860s Berthelot was done with synthesis and turned to thermochemistry, the study of the heat of chemical reactions. In some of his work he had unknowingly been anticipated by Hess, but he went much further. He devised a calorimeter within which he could measure the heat of chemical reactions and ran hundreds of determinations. This work along with that being conducted by Thomson threw the science of thermochemistry into high gear."(Asimov).

Skagen 14de Februar 1895". 1 side 8vo.
