GROTIUS, HUGO. - FIRST TEXTBOOK IN CHRISTIAN APOLOGETICS.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn46021
Lugduni Batavorum (Leiden), 1640. 12mo. Bound in one contemp. full vellum. Small spots to vellum. MS-title on spine faint. (6),327,(7);372 pp. Light marginal browning. From the library of the Danish zoologist Henrik Krøyer. Early edition of this famous work arguing for the truth of Christianity and aiming to convert Muslims and Jews to Christianity. While in Paris, Grotius set about rendering into Latin prose a work which he had compiled in prison, providing rudimentary yet systematic arguments for the truth of Christianity. (Showcasing Grotius' skill as a poet, the earlier Dutch version of the work, Bewijs van den waren Godsdienst (pub. 1622), was written entirely in didactic verse.) The Latin work was first published in 1627 as De veritate religionis Christianae."It was the first Protestant textbook in Christian apologetics, and was divided into six books. Part of the text dealt with the emerging questions of historical consciousness concerning the authorship and content of the canonical gospels. Other sections of the work addressed pagan religion, Judaism and Islam. What also distinguished this work in the history of Christian apologetics is its precursor role in anticipating the problems expressed in Eighteenth century Deism, and that Grotius represents the first of the practitioners of legal or juridical apologetics in the defence of Christian belief. Hugely popular, the book was translated from Latin into English, Arabic, Persian and Chinese by Edward Pococke for use in missionary work in the East and remained in print until the end of the nineteenth century."(Wikipedia).

Berlin, Julius Springer, 1933. Royal8vo. Bound in contemporary half calf with gilt lettering to spine. In "Die Naturwissenschaften", Vol. 21, 1933. A library stamp to title page, otherwise a very fine and clean. Pp. 787-788. First printing of the influential Meissner effect which lead to the discovery of the phenomenological theory of superconductivity by Fritz and Heinz London in 1935; The Meissner effect is an expulsion of a magnetic field from a superconductor during its transition to the superconducting state and it allowed the first theoretical predictions for superconductivity to be made"In the spring of 1933, in the course of these measurements Meissner and his colleague Robert Ochsenfeld observed a new phenomenon that contributed greatly to the understanding of superconductivity. The magnitude of the magnetic field measured between conductors was a function of the direction of the current, which could be explained by the role played by the earth's magnetic field. Therefore, Meissner and Ochsenfeld carried out the measurements of changes in the magnetic field close to the conductors when these were subject only to the earth's field, that is, without any current running through them. Before superconductivity set in, the magnetic lines of force penetrated the crystals with almost no resistance because of their low susceptibility. From what was known about superconductivity at that time, it was expected that the distribution of the lines of force would remain unchanged if the temperature were lowered below the threshold level. However, Meissner and Ochsenfeld observed an increase in the lines of force in close proximity to the superconductors. Meissner interpreted this result as follows: the magnetic field flux was displaced from the crystals when superconductivity set in the magnetic field flux that previously flowed inside the conductors was now flowing between the crystals." Paris, Gauthier-Villars, 1875. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome 81, No 21. Pp. (909-) 992. With titlepage to vol. 81. Mendelejeff's paper: pp. 969-972. Titlepage lightly browned and with a punched stamp in lower margin. Otherwise clean and fine. First apperance of this importent paper which established that Gallium is identical with Eka-aluminum (the missing element between Aluminum and Indium) in Mendelejeff's periodic table. The properties of the new element corresponded well with those predicted. A bitter contorversy was raised between the discoverer of Gallium, Lecog de Boisbaudran and Mendelejeff. "The discovery of the three elements predicted by Mendeleev was, however, of decisive importance in the acceptance of his law. In 1875 Lecoq de Boisbaudran, knowing nothing of Mendeleev’s work, discovered by spectroscopic methods a new metal, which he named gallium. Both in the nature of its discovery and in a number of its properties gallium coincided with Mendeleev’s prediction for eka-aluminum, but its specific weight at first seemed to be less than predicted. Hearing of the discovery, Mendeleev sent to France "Zametka po povodu otkrytia gallia" (the paper offered) ("Note on the Occasion of the Discovery of Gallium"), in which he insisted that gallium was in fact his eka-aluminum. Although Lecoq de Boisbaudran objected to this interpretation, he made a second determination of the specific weight of gallium and confirmed that such was indeed the case. From that moment the periodic law was no longer a mere hypothesis, and the scientific world was astounded to note that Mendeleev, the theorist, had seen the properties of a new element more clearly than the chemist who had empirically discovered it. From this time, too, Mendeleev’s work came to be more widely known;"(DSB).Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1875 C.

London, The Lancet Limited, 1940. Royal8vo. Bound in contemporary full black cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "The Lancet", Vol. 2, 1940. A fine and clean copy. Pp. 226-228. [Entire volume: XX, 830 pp.]. First printing of this seminal paper within microbiology and medicine. Alexander Flemming had in the 20ies discovered penicillin but it was not until Chain and Florey's groundbreaking research, published in the present paper, that the true remarkable features of penicillin - that it was probably the most effective chemotherapeutic drug known - became know and usable on a practical level. Flemming, Chain and Florey received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1945 "for the discovery of penicillin and its curative effect in various infectious diseases"."He [Flemming] was unsuccessful, however, due to his limited knowledge of chemistry, and the "mold juice" remained of limited use until 1940-41, when Ernst Boris Chain and Howard W. Florey, using Flemming's original culture, successfully prepared a pure and stable penicillin extract and demonstrated its usefulness in treating human bacterial infection. Within three years the United States government, in collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry, was producing penicillin on a large scale, with the result that many thousand lives were saved during World War II." (Grolier, One Hundred Books Famous in Medicine)."In the late 1930's, Florey and Chain began their investigation of this mold broth filtrate from Penicillium notatum as part of their general interest in systemic antibacterial agents. Fleming had isolated penicillin in 1928. He found it was a promising external antiseptic against some pathogenic bacteria, but its chemical instability (among other reasons) soon led him to abandon penicillin as a therapeutic agent.By May 1940 Chain had produced enough penicillin for Florey to conduct tests on mice infected with deadly hemolytic streptococci. These early tests yielded very promising results, Chain, in collaboration with Edward Abraham, spent the rest of the year improving the extraction and purification of penicillin for clinical tests, which began early in 1941.Serious problems with the fermentation production of penicillin led the British and American governments, by early 1944. to coordinate hundreds of scientists for the development of a commercially feasible synthesis of penicillin. Chain and his collaborators at Oxford, however, had shed much light on the chemistry of the drug by this time. By October 1943, they proposed what turned out to be the correct structure of penicillin. They established a fundamental understanding of the chemistry of penicillin. This aided fermentation work on the drug in the 1940's and served as the foundation for the development of semisynthetic penicillins from the mid 1950's on."

Kaufmann's paper: pp. 544-552, textillustrations. A stamp to upper corner of titlepage. Clean and fine. First printing of this landmark paper in particle physics, in which Kaufmann found that the cathode are negatively charged particles, that certain properties of the cathode rays are independent of the nature of the gas that they traverse, and determining the ratio e/m. (charge/mass)"To define the 'birth of an era' is perhaps best left for parlor games. Let me write of the BIRTH OF PARTICLE PHYSICS nevertheless, define it to take place in April 1897, and appoint Kaufmann and Thomson as keepers of the gate. Their respective experimental arrangements...are of comparable quality, their experimental results equally good."(Pais "Inward Bound", p. 84.)."In 1897 three physicists, Weichert, Kaufmann, and Thomson, in independent experiments, found that cathode rays are indeed negatively charged particles having the peculiar property that the ratio of the mass and the charge of these particles is in the order of 1000 times smaller than for the lightest ion, the ion of the hydrogen. The term 'electron', which had previously been used to denote the 'elementary charge' , was soon adopted as the name of the new particle. The electron was the first of the later so-called 'elementary particles' to be discovered." (Siegmund Brandt "The Harvest of a Century" No. 4 (p.16 ff.).

"Written by and large in German with a minimum of technical terminology, these books were intended not for an audience of experts, but instead, as the subtitle to the 'Introduction to the Doctrine of Reason' specifies, for a general audience of “all rational persons of whatever social standing and sex” (SEP) Christian Thomasius (1655–1728) was a German philosopher and jurist often regarded as one of the most important figures of the early German Enlightenment. Thomasius played a significant role in advocating for a separation between theology and law arguing that legal matters should be based on reason rather than religious doctrine. He taught at the University of Leipzig and later at the University of Halle, where he became the first professor of natural law and the rector of the university.

Ultrajecti (Utrecht), Gulielmum Broedelet, 1694. 4to. In contemporary full calf with four raised bands and richly gilt spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Small worm-tract in inner margin, affecting app. 20 leaves, not affecting text. 1 plates detached and a few leaves with marginal dampstain. Overall a very nice and clean copy. (14), 448, (8) pp. + 4 plates and 1 frontispiece. First edition of this linguistic work on the source and history of the first language, with a focus on Hebrew. The Dutch philologist Etienne Morin (1624–1700) utilizes the Augustinian thesis in his discussion of the primeval language: "Quoting from Augustine (City of God xvi. 5 and 10), he maintains that the world always ought to be divided into two antithetical communities. Of these two, the patriarchs Shem and Heber belonged to the city of God, while the crowd of rebels who conspired at Babel embodied the city of man. Morin concludes that this proves that Shem could not possibly have taken part in the conspiracy at Babel. Augustine could not have put forward a better argument, he says. As the constant companion of true religion, the original language was preserved in the family and among the pious descendants of Heber who transmitted it as a legacy to those practising piety." (Eskhult, Augustine and the Primeval Language in Early Modern Exegesis and Philology).
