lyn38780
København, Beekens Forlag, 1824. 8vo. Cont. hcalf, somewhat worn. Spine with wear and a tear to front hinge. Internally brownspotted. Inner hinges a bit weak. 22,226 pp. First edition of Rask's important "Spanish Grammar", Otto Jespersen's copy, with his name in own hand on front free end-paper. Otto Jespersen (1860 - 1943) was one of the greatest linguists of the 20th century. He was professor of English language at the university of Copenhagen, and his works on English language and grammar are some of the best within their field and they were used at most English universities. He is the inventor of the famous artificial language "Novial", and his work "Fonetik" is considered a mile-stone of European linguistics."Through a long life Otto Jespersen has offered valuable contributions to general phonetics and grammar and to our knowledge of English and Danish and other languages, thus being a worthy successor of the great Danish linguists of the last century (Rask, Thomsen, Verner, and others). His revolutionary work for the improvement of the teaching of modern languages has had great effects far beyond the boundary of his own country." (Niels Haislund, in: Sebeok, Portraits of Linguists. A Biographical Source Book for the History of Western Linguistics, 1746-1963, 1967). Rasmus Rask is one of the absolutely most prominent and famous Danish philologers and is very well esteemed worldwide. He was the first to systematically study the ancient Nordic languages and is the discoverer of the relations between the consonants in the Indo-European languages. This discovery served as the foundation of the rules Jacob Grimm later formulated, underlying the Germanic and High-German soundshifts. In PMM Rask is yielded as "one of the founders of the modern science of language." (PMM 266).

(No place), 1785. 8vo. Very nice cont. marbled paper binding w. gilt tilte-label and gilt (library) marking (B.UH) to spine. A bit of wear w. minor loss to capitals. An excellent, very nice and clean copy. 183 pp. The very rare first French edition of this important work on Danish demography and economy. The work is an augmented translation of the second half of "Über das königliche Dänische Indigenatrecht und einige andere Gegenstände der Staatswissenschaft und Geschichte" from 1779, by the same author. The work contains tables that show the current demographical situation in Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Schleswig, Holstein, Oldenburg, and Delmenhorst, as well as the economic situation and development of the Kingdom of Denmark, e.g. an aspect of the trade-relation between the Kingdom of Denmark and that of England from 1698 till 1754. The work is thus highly interesting in several regards. It is one of the earliest works to deal with the question of the right of citizenship in Denmark and an early account and analysis of the economic situation of the country. The work must also be one of the first to seriously treat the demographical aspect of Denmark, as the first census in Denmark took place in 1769, and the second in 1787, being the only conts of the entire population of the Kingdom of Denmark conducted before the 19th century.Gottlob Benedikt von Schirach (1743 - 1804) was the son of the theologist Christian Gottlob Schirach. G.B. Schirach was a German historian and Danish counsellor of legation. He published a number of books within the fields of history and economics, due to which he came to be regarded as one of the most important writers of his time. He founded the journal "Politisches Journal..." in 1781, which became one of the one of the first really important journals of Northern and Middle Germany. Biblotheca Danica I: 739

No stamps, not an ex library copy. Fine and clean. Pp.69-87. [Entire volume: IV,412 pp]. First apperance (simultaneously printed in Philosophical Magazine) of a fundamental paper in the development of the Quantum Theory. Three fundamental ideas were set forth here: 1. Slater's idea of 'a Virtual radiation field', 2. statistical conservation of energy and momentum, and 3. statistical independence of the processes of emission and absorption in distant atoms. (See Van der Waerden "Sources of Quantum Mechanics" No. 5)."In an effort to reconcile the particulate and wavelike properties of radiation, Bohr, Kramers, and Slater in 1924 formulated a new quantum theory of radiation. According to their hypothesis, momentum and energy-are conserved only statistically in interactions between radiation and matter.".The present paper became a great influence to Bothe and his Compton collisions and the Coincidence method which eventually resulted in him being awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics.

(Carl Henrik Koch i Dansk Olysningsfilosofi).

(Berlin, Haude et Spener, 1753). 4to. No wrappers as issued in "Memoires de l'Academie Royale des Sciences et Belles Lettres". tome VII, pp. 305-330 + two engraved plates. First printing of Euler's paper on how to raise water, which was a study written on the background of his - unsuccessful - garden-project in Frederick the Great's large complex of summer palaces, Sanssouci where Euler was asked to design the pumps to the many fountains. "I wanted to make a fountain in my Garden", Frederic the Great wrote to Voltaire on 25 January 1778. But the water-art project ended in a fiasco. The fountain design was supposed to be executed according to the latest knowledge in hydraulics and should even surpass Versailles with its splendor. "Euler calculated the effort of the wheels for raising the water to a basin, from where it should fall down through canals, in order to form a fountain jet at Sans-Souci. My mill was constructed mathematically, and it could not raise one drop of water to a distance of fifty feet from the basin."Since then the fiasco at Sanssouci stands out as an example for the gulf between theory and practice. And Leonhard Euler, the mathematical genius from Basel, became a target of mockery and malicious joy". (Michael Eckert: Euler and the Fountains of Sanssouci).See Enetröm E202.

Copenhagen, 10th February, 1823. 4to. In later half cloth with gilt stamp to front board and title-paperlabel pasted on to top of front board. Stamp to first leaf of text. Manuscript in fine legible hand with 20-25 lines per page, most likely translated and transcribed by Friedrich de Løwenørn. 11 ff. Danish manuscript-translation of part of Thomas Arnold’s “American Practical Lunarian, and Seamen's Guide”. The manuscript was presumably made by De Løwenørn (Kommandør-Kaptajn Friderich de Løwenørn). Captain lieutenant Poul de Løwenørn assisted the Danish crown in establishing the Royal Danish Nautical Chart Archive. He was appointed the institution’s first Director. At this time, only France had a similar institute. "In the first instance, the Danish Admirality requested Løwenørn to collect all existing nautical charts and navigational details in the country, for both Danish and international waters. He was to develop accurate and reliable charts for both the Navy and Merchant Marine. In addition to these formidable tasks, Løwenørn also took the initiative to establish a Lighthouse Authority, a Buoy Authority and a Pilot Authority as well as improve the country’s harbours." (Oslo), Aksel Sandemose, (1955). 8vo.

(New York), American physical Society, 1962. Lex8vo. Volume 9, No. 1, July 1, 1962 of "Physical Review Letters", In the original printed blue wrappers. A very nice and clean copy externally as well as internally, near mint. Pp. 36-44. [Entire issue: (2), 46 pp]. First edition of this seminal paper in which the discovery of the muon neutrino was first announced. The muon neutrino is the second of the three neutrinos and it forms the second generation of leptons. Jack Steinberger, Leon Lederman and Melvin Schwartz were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in the year 1988, "for the neutrino beam method and the demonstration of the doublet structure of the leptons through the discovery of the muon neutrino". In 1934 Enrico Fermi had solved the major problem of beta decay: How do electrons come out of the nucleus if there are non to begin with? Pauli had named his proposed light particle a neutron. James Chadwick had named his much more massive nuclear particle a neutron as well which left the two particles with the same name. Fermi therefore, to solve the confusion, coined the term neutrino (Italian diminutive of neutron). Speculations in the early 1940ies were centered on whether it would be possible to find even smaller parts of an atom. "The experiment used a beam of the AGS's energetic protons to produce a shower of pi mesons, which traveled 70 feet toward a 5,000-ton steel wall made of old battleship plates. On the way, they decayed into muons and neutrinos, but only the latter particles could pass through the wall into a neon-filled detector called a spark chamber. There, the impact of neutrinos on aluminum plates produced muon spark trails that could be detected and photographed -- proving the existence of muon-neutrinos. The experiment's use of the first-ever neutrino beam paved the way for scientists to use these particles in research at the AGS and around the world."(Nobel Prize, Brookhaven National Laboratory) "Following the discovery of a second neutrino associated with the muon - the Muon neutrino - at Brookhaven in 1962 by L. Lederman, M. Schwartz, J. Steinberger, and collaborators, a new neutrino program was started in CERN in 1963. Using a spark chamber set-up and a heavy liquid bubble chamber exposed to the new high quality neutrino beam the discovery was confirmed with high statistics". (Krige, John. History of CERN, 1996, p. 433).

Richter, del. et lith. - Walter, Imp. Fine and clean. Half a cm. added to right margin, not affecting print or image. The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.
