Upsala, Johan Edman, 1783. 8vo. In contemporary half calf with four raised bands. Previous owner's name to front free end-paper and half-title. Wear to extremities, internally fine and clean. (24), 366, (10) pp. First Swedish translation of the official account of Cook's second voyage and Georg Forster's unofficial Voyage round the World."Cook earned his place in history by opening up the Pacific to western civilization and by the foundation of British Australia. The world was given for the first time an essentially complete knowledge of the Pacific Ocean and Australia, and Cook proved once and for all that there was no great southern continent, as had always been believed. He also suggested the existence of antarctic land in the southern ice ring, a fact which was not proved until the explorations of the nineteenth century" (Printing and the Mind of Man p.135). "The success of Cook's first voyage led the Admiralty to send him on a second expedition, described in the present work, which was to circumnavigate the globe as far south as possible in search of any southern continents. The men of this expedition became the first to cross the Antarctic Circle. Further visits were made to New Zealand, and on two great sweeps Cook made an astonishing series of discoveries and rediscoveries including Easter Island, the Marquesas, Tahiti and the Society Islands, Niue, the Tonga Islands, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, Norfolk Island, […] Cook discovered and charted South Georgia, after which he called at Cape Town, St. Helena and Ascension, and the Azores. This voyage produced a vast amount of information concerning the Pacific peoples and islands, proved the value of the chronometer as an aid to finding longitude, and improved techniques for preventing scurvy" (Hill p.123)

Berlin, Weidmannsche Buchhandlund, 1923. Lex 8vo. Orig. printed wrappers. Front wrapper and spine intact and in fine condition, back wrapper partly missing, -only ab. the middle third part is present. Uncut and internally nice and clean. A tear to front hinge and a few repairs to spine. (8), 438 pp. The not common first edition of Jaeger's seminal work, which fundamentally changed Aristotle scholarship in the 20th century. With the publication of his first major work, "Aristoteles", Jaeger became an academic sensation, and no student of Aristotle can be unaware of the huge impact this highly untraditional work on the history of the development of Aristotle had within academic circles. The work is epochal and revolutionary, and though it has been heavily criticized an scholded by especially later scholars, there can be no doubt that the book raises several now inevitable questions that previously had been almost completely neglected.Being very thorough in his investigations and using everything he could find from the hand of Aristotle, Jaeger constructs a picture of Aristotle's development through time that was to revolutionize the study of Aristotle. By seeking parallels in works that are not internally consistent, Jaeger turns the hitherto established chronology of the writings of Aristotle upside down and demonstrates his increasing independence from Plato. After the publication of this work the genetic and developmental question came to dominate Aristotle scholarship, and nothing could be written about Aristotle without taking these questions into consideration. Probably no other work can be said to have influenced the study of the greatest philosopher of all times to such a degree as this one.

Kjøbenhavn, Arnold Busck, 1933. Royal8vo. In the original printed wrappers. A few nicks to extremities and previous owner's name to half title. Otherwise a very fine and clean copy. 162 pp. First printing of the influential Danish biochemist and physiologist Henrik Dam's thesis on the biological significance of the sterines. Dam was awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1943 for his work in discovering vitamin K and its role in human physiology, the present work being a seminal step towards this. "During the years 1932 and 1933 Dam worked at the laboratory of Rudolf Schoenheimer in Freiburg, Germany, thanks to a Rockefeller fellowship he obtained to further his studies of the metabolism of sterols. In 1933 he received the D.Sc. in biochemistry at the University of Copenhagen with a thesis entitled Nogle undersøgelser over sterinernes biologiske betydning (Some Investigations on the Biological Significance of the Sterols). The next year Dam worked with Paul Karrer in Zurich. He continued to hold his post as associate professor until his appointment as professor of biochemistry at the Polytechnic Institute in Copenhagen. This appointment, however, was in absentia, because since 1940 Dam was on a lecture tour to the United States and Canada under the auspices of the American-Scandinavian Foundation. The tour was planned before the occupation of Denmark by German troops in April 1940." (DSB).

Hamburg, Carl Ernst Bohn, 1766. 8vo. In contemporary full calf with four raised bands and gilt lettering and ornamentation to spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Light wear to extremities. Ex-libris (F. v. Iuel) pasted on to pasted down front end-paper. Internally very fine and clean. (16), 766, (24) pp. Third edition of Reimarus’ collection of essays on various aspects of natural religion, seeking to establish a rational basis for belief in God and moral principles. He argues against revealed religion, arguing that it relies on supernatural claims that cannot be verified through reason. Instead Reimarus advocates for a religion based on natural theology, grounded in the observation of the natural world and human reason. Hermann Samuel Reimarus (1694–1768) was a German philosopher, theologian and Orientalist. He studied at the universities of Jena and Wittenberg, specializing in Oriental languages, particularly Hebrew. After completing his education, Reimarus served as a school rector in Wismar before returning to his hometown as a professor of Oriental languages.

CHRISTIAN 4.s PESTFORORDNING -
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn59604
(Danmarkshistorien.dk)

RAOULT, F.-M. (FRANCOIS MARIE). - DISCOVERY OF RAOULT'S LAWS.

(Paris, Gauthier-Villars), 1882. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome 95, No 22 a. Tome 104 No 21 (entire issues offered). Pp. 1017-1076 and pp. 1387-1462. Raoult's papers: pp. 1030-33 (tome 95) and pp. 1430-1433 (tome 104). First appearance of Raoult's two importent papers in which described a method for finding the molecular weight of an organic compound by the determination of the lowering of the freezing point of water that resulted from dissolving that compound in water and the law governing the relation between solutes and vapor pressure."Then in 1882, F.-M. Raoult published his results on the effects of nondissociating organic solutes, from which he deduced a general law controlling the lowering of freezing points (the first paper offered). Four years later he extended this work to show the effect of solutes on vapor pressure (the second paper offered). Having established the effect of nondissociating compounds, he was in position to show that salts produced an eeffect which, though anomalous, could nevertheless be explained by the supposition that a dissolved molecule broke up into other molecules. This work was of great value in supplying a new method for determining molecular weights, since the depression of freezing point and vapor pressure (as well a the related rise in boiling point later discovered) are proportional to the moleculat concentrations ofthe solutions; it was of equal value in supporting the ideas of van't Hoff on osmotic pressure. With the announcement of the dissociation theory of Arrhenius, the anomalies were explained and the full significance of the generalizations of Raoult was recognized. Raoult published the formulations of his laws in the "Comptes Rendus" for 1882 and 1887 (the papers offered)" (Leicester a. Klickstein "A Source Book in Chemistry", pp. 471 ff).

Akademie der Wissenschaften", Bd. CXXIII, Abt. IIa, Dezember, 1914. A very fine and clean copy. 25 pp. First printing of Smolukowski's important paper on molecule statistics, emulsion and their connection to Brownian Motion. Einstein and Smolukowski work simultaneously and independently in the beginning of the 1900ies Brownian Motion. Smolukowski continued his work in this field and he work is distinct from Einstein's since Einstein said nothing of the collisions between a Brownian particle and the surrounding molecules."From about 1900 Smoluchowski worked on Brownian movement. He wished to use experimental data to verify the theory he had obtained desire complicated by the confused situation of experimental research. In the meantime Einstein, in papers of 1905 and 1906, had presented a solution to the problem. Smoluchowski then decided to publish his results in 1906, which presented his different method. Einstein started from general relations of statistical physics, an approach that was universal but did not lend itself to visualization. For example, Einstein said nothing of the collisions between a Brownian particle and the surrounding molecules. Smoluchowski started by examining the effects of successive collisions and obtained a final formula that differed little from Einstein's. Smoluchowski's further works in this field extend through an examination of the Brownian movement of a particle undergoing the influence of a quasi-elastic force to the Brownian movements of macroscopic bodies. At the Conference of Natural Scientists at Münster in 1912, Smoluchowski proposed the observation of the Brownian rotative movement of a small mirror suspended on a thin quartz fiber and the observation free end of a similar fiber. The first experiment was performed by W. Gerlach and E. Lehrer in 1927, and later by Eugen Kappler; the second, by A Houdijk and P. Zeeman, and by E. Einthoven. In 1925, Both experiments confirmed Smoluchowski's calculations."

Kopenhagen, Christ. Gottl. Proft, 1793. 8vo. Uniformly bound in two contemporary full calf bindings with five raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. Small paper-label to top of spines. A few stains to boards, spine miscoloured. Internally nice and clean. XVIII, 253, (1) pp.; XXXII, 199, (3), 138 pp. Second improved edition of the first German translation of Paine's seminal "The Rights of Man": "the textbook of radical thought and the clearest of all expositions of the basic principles of democracy" (PMM). The work was written as a response to Burke's "Reflections on the Revolution in France" from 1790, in which Burke voices his distrust of the "Perfectibilitarians" and of the mere destructive criticism of institutions and concludes that the French revolutionaries are not fighting for real liberty and that they have no idea what it would take for them to "form themselves into a mass which has a true political personality". Reacting to Burke's excpression of the horror and dismay that the liberal-minded now felt for the French revolutionaries, Paine defends the French Revolution against Burke's attacked. He famously lays down the principles of fundamental human rights that must stand no matter what, no matter what is necessary to obtain them, and he argues that popular political revolution is permissible when a government does not safeguard its people, their natural rights, and their national interests. Paine himself condered the work "one of the most useful and benevolent books ever offered to mankind". It was indeed hugely popular, hugely controversial, and hugely influential. Although suppressed on the day of publication, the modified version was quickly printed and reprinted. It was very widely circulated, with copies being read aloud in inns and coffee houses. Although the Revolution controversy had spawned more than 300 pamphlets, Pain's "Rights of Man" was the first seriously to damage Burke's case and to restore credit to the French both in Britain and America. The publication of Rights of Man caused a furor in England; Thomas Paine was tried in absentia, and convicted for seditious libel against the Crown, but was unavailable for hanging, having departed England for Africa.

Internally nice and clean. (6), 206, (2) pp. The uncommon first edition, posthumously published, of William Outram’s sermons. It was stated that these discourses had been taken down in shorthand, but they are not genuine. In order to do justice to his memory, his relatives caused 'Twenty Sermons preached upon several occasions' to be published from 'the author's own copies,' by James Gardiner, D.D., afterwards bishop of Lincoln (2nd ed., corrected, London, 1697, 8vo).”. William Outram (1626 – 1679) was an English nonconformist minister, puritan and writer. His works often addressed issues such as predestination, the nature of God, and the role of faith in salvation.
