New York, American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1929. Lex8vo. Volume VIII, January, No. 1, 1929 of "The Bell System Technical Journal". In the original printed blue wrappers. Tear to upper part of spine. A bit of minor browning to extremities. Internally fine and clean. Pp. 1-2. [Entire issue: 216 pp.]. First publication of the paper in which the word "Decibel" (dB) was coined and officially announced for the first time. The concept of decibel originates from methods used to measure reductions in audio levels in telephone circuits. Today decibel is being used to measure sound volume in general. The original unit name decided upon was Bel, in honour of Alexander Graham Bell. Because the Bel unit was larger than needed in practice, one tenth of a bel, the DeciBel, was to become world standard of measuring sound volume. Up until 1929, The Bell System had used the "transmission unit" (TU) as their measuring standard which was devised to replace the "Miles of Standard Cable ".In the mid 1920'ies The European International Advisory Committee recommended to the various European telephone administrations that they adopt either the decimal or naperian unit (after John Napier) as a standard for measuring volume. 1 TU was defined as ten times the base-10 logarithm of the ratio of measured power to a reference power level. The definitions were conveniently chosen such that 1 TU approximately equaled 1 MSC. Eventually, international standards bodies adopted the base-10 logarithm as a standard unit, named the bel in honor of the Bell System's founder and telecommunications pioneer Alexander Graham Bell.Other paper of interest contained in the present issue:1. (Berlin, Haude et Spener, 1753). 4to. No wrappers as issued in "Memoires de l'Academie Royale des Sciences et Belles Lettres". tome VII, pp. 305-330 + two engraved plates. First printing of Euler's paper on how to raise water, which was a study written on the background of his - unsuccessful - garden-project in Frederick the Great's large complex of summer palaces, Sanssouci where Euler was asked to design the pumps to the many fountains. "I wanted to make a fountain in my Garden", Frederic the Great wrote to Voltaire on 25 January 1778. But the water-art project ended in a fiasco. The fountain design was supposed to be executed according to the latest knowledge in hydraulics and should even surpass Versailles with its splendor. "Euler calculated the effort of the wheels for raising the water to a basin, from where it should fall down through canals, in order to form a fountain jet at Sans-Souci. My mill was constructed mathematically, and it could not raise one drop of water to a distance of fifty feet from the basin."Since then the fiasco at Sanssouci stands out as an example for the gulf between theory and practice. And Leonhard Euler, the mathematical genius from Basel, became a target of mockery and malicious joy". (Michael Eckert: Euler and the Fountains of Sanssouci).See Enetröm E202.

Copenhagen, 10th February, 1823. 4to. In later half cloth with gilt stamp to front board and title-paperlabel pasted on to top of front board. Stamp to first leaf of text. Manuscript in fine legible hand with 20-25 lines per page, most likely translated and transcribed by Friedrich de Løwenørn. 11 ff. Danish manuscript-translation of part of Thomas Arnold’s “American Practical Lunarian, and Seamen's Guide”. The manuscript was presumably made by De Løwenørn (Kommandør-Kaptajn Friderich de Løwenørn). Captain lieutenant Poul de Løwenørn assisted the Danish crown in establishing the Royal Danish Nautical Chart Archive. He was appointed the institution’s first Director. At this time, only France had a similar institute. "In the first instance, the Danish Admirality requested Løwenørn to collect all existing nautical charts and navigational details in the country, for both Danish and international waters. He was to develop accurate and reliable charts for both the Navy and Merchant Marine. In addition to these formidable tasks, Løwenørn also took the initiative to establish a Lighthouse Authority, a Buoy Authority and a Pilot Authority as well as improve the country’s harbours." (Oslo), Aksel Sandemose, (1955). 8vo.

(New York), American physical Society, 1962. Lex8vo. Volume 9, No. 1, July 1, 1962 of "Physical Review Letters", In the original printed blue wrappers. A very nice and clean copy externally as well as internally, near mint. Pp. 36-44. [Entire issue: (2), 46 pp]. First edition of this seminal paper in which the discovery of the muon neutrino was first announced. The muon neutrino is the second of the three neutrinos and it forms the second generation of leptons. Jack Steinberger, Leon Lederman and Melvin Schwartz were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in the year 1988, "for the neutrino beam method and the demonstration of the doublet structure of the leptons through the discovery of the muon neutrino". In 1934 Enrico Fermi had solved the major problem of beta decay: How do electrons come out of the nucleus if there are non to begin with? Pauli had named his proposed light particle a neutron. James Chadwick had named his much more massive nuclear particle a neutron as well which left the two particles with the same name. Fermi therefore, to solve the confusion, coined the term neutrino (Italian diminutive of neutron). Speculations in the early 1940ies were centered on whether it would be possible to find even smaller parts of an atom. "The experiment used a beam of the AGS's energetic protons to produce a shower of pi mesons, which traveled 70 feet toward a 5,000-ton steel wall made of old battleship plates. On the way, they decayed into muons and neutrinos, but only the latter particles could pass through the wall into a neon-filled detector called a spark chamber. There, the impact of neutrinos on aluminum plates produced muon spark trails that could be detected and photographed -- proving the existence of muon-neutrinos. The experiment's use of the first-ever neutrino beam paved the way for scientists to use these particles in research at the AGS and around the world."(Nobel Prize, Brookhaven National Laboratory) "Following the discovery of a second neutrino associated with the muon - the Muon neutrino - at Brookhaven in 1962 by L. Lederman, M. Schwartz, J. Steinberger, and collaborators, a new neutrino program was started in CERN in 1963. Using a spark chamber set-up and a heavy liquid bubble chamber exposed to the new high quality neutrino beam the discovery was confirmed with high statistics". (Krige, John. History of CERN, 1996, p. 433).

Richter, del. et lith. - Walter, Imp. Fine and clean. Half a cm. added to right margin, not affecting print or image. The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.

(24), 366, (10) pp. First Swedish translation of the official account of Cook's second voyage and Georg Forster's unofficial Voyage round the World."Cook earned his place in history by opening up the Pacific to western civilization and by the foundation of British Australia. The world was given for the first time an essentially complete knowledge of the Pacific Ocean and Australia, and Cook proved once and for all that there was no great southern continent, as had always been believed. He also suggested the existence of antarctic land in the southern ice ring, a fact which was not proved until the explorations of the nineteenth century" (Printing and the Mind of Man p.135). "The success of Cook's first voyage led the Admiralty to send him on a second expedition, described in the present work, which was to circumnavigate the globe as far south as possible in search of any southern continents. The men of this expedition became the first to cross the Antarctic Circle. Further visits were made to New Zealand, and on two great sweeps Cook made an astonishing series of discoveries and rediscoveries including Easter Island, the Marquesas, Tahiti and the Society Islands, Niue, the Tonga Islands, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, Norfolk Island, […] Cook discovered and charted South Georgia, after which he called at Cape Town, St. Helena and Ascension, and the Azores. This voyage produced a vast amount of information concerning the Pacific peoples and islands, proved the value of the chronometer as an aid to finding longitude, and improved techniques for preventing scurvy" (Hill p.123)

Front wrapper and spine intact and in fine condition, back wrapper partly missing, -only ab. the middle third part is present. Uncut and internally nice and clean. A tear to front hinge and a few repairs to spine. (8), 438 pp. The not common first edition of Jaeger's seminal work, which fundamentally changed Aristotle scholarship in the 20th century. With the publication of his first major work, "Aristoteles", Jaeger became an academic sensation, and no student of Aristotle can be unaware of the huge impact this highly untraditional work on the history of the development of Aristotle had within academic circles. The work is epochal and revolutionary, and though it has been heavily criticized an scholded by especially later scholars, there can be no doubt that the book raises several now inevitable questions that previously had been almost completely neglected.Being very thorough in his investigations and using everything he could find from the hand of Aristotle, Jaeger constructs a picture of Aristotle's development through time that was to revolutionize the study of Aristotle. By seeking parallels in works that are not internally consistent, Jaeger turns the hitherto established chronology of the writings of Aristotle upside down and demonstrates his increasing independence from Plato. After the publication of this work the genetic and developmental question came to dominate Aristotle scholarship, and nothing could be written about Aristotle without taking these questions into consideration. Probably no other work can be said to have influenced the study of the greatest philosopher of all times to such a degree as this one.

In 1933 he received the D.Sc. in biochemistry at the University of Copenhagen with a thesis entitled Nogle undersøgelser over sterinernes biologiske betydning (Some Investigations on the Biological Significance of the Sterols). The next year Dam worked with Paul Karrer in Zurich. He continued to hold his post as associate professor until his appointment as professor of biochemistry at the Polytechnic Institute in Copenhagen. CHRISTIAN 4.s PESTFORORDNING -

(Danmarkshistorien.dk)
