The book made him famous, and he was recognized as one of the foremost botanists of his time."(DSB)."De Vries discovered, revealed, and proved the importence of Mendel's work. (Paris, Crochard, 1826). No wrappers. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago.", tome 31, Cahier 1. Halftitle to vol. 31.Pp.5-112 a. 1 folded engraved plate. (The entire issue offered). Berzeliu's paper: pp. 5-36. First appearance of a milestone paper in chemistry. In this paper Berzelius drew up the table of atomic weights of the elements, which, with only a few exceptions are similar to those used today. He symbolizes the elements by the first or two letters of the Latin name of the element, and he symbolizes compounds by stting the element symbols together together with the number of atoms involved when grater that one. This is the importent revison of his system announced in 1818."In 1819 Mitscherlich showed that similarity in chemical structure is accompanied by identity of crystalline form (Mitscherlich's law of isomorphism). berzelius realized at once that Mitscherlich's findins called for importent changes in his own system. he accordingly published a new table of atomic weights in 1826 (the paper offered)."(Taton "Science in the 19th Century", p. 279). - Holmberg, Bibliografi öfver Berzelius, nr. 29.

SCHELLING, KARL EBERHARD.

lyn36194
Landshut, 1806. 8vo. Cont. marbled boards. Title label on spine missing. Wear to capitals w. some loss, corners bumped. Internally minor brownspotting. XXXIV, 178, (1, -Verbesserungen) pp. The scarce first edition on Karl Schelling's rare work on "Life and its Appearance".Karl Eberhard Schelling (1783-1854) was the younger brother of Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling (1775-1854), together with Fichte and Hegel the central thinker of German Idealism. Karl Schelling was a trained physician, who studied in Jena and there attended some of Hegel's lectures (1801-2). He later settled in Stuttgart (1805), as a general practicioner, where he wrote his main, though now forgotten, main work "Über das Leben und seine Erscheinung". In a letter to Hegel, F.W.v. Schelling suggests him to read an article by his brother the physician concerning animal magnetism (in Jahrbücher für Medizin als Wissenschaft, 1807), and it is this topic that is developed in his "On Life and the Appearance of it". Karl Schelling here advances a theory of life that involves a World Soul, in which induvidual souls participate. His theories of aether, sleep and death bear many resemblances to Hegel's philosophy of spirit. It is also Karl Schelling who treats Hegel's sister Christianne, when she falls ill, and it is likely that the treatments (which he is said to have undertaken for free) involved "magnetic" therapy. Hegel himself was very interested in animal magnetism, as his Philosophy of nature also bears witness to. There is no doubt about the fact that Hegel was quite impressed and intrigued with Karl Schelling's now scarcely known but interesting work.

Scavenius played a central role in shaping Danish foreign policy during critical moments in the country's modern history, including World War I, the Schleswig plebiscites and the German occupation of Denmark. His legacy remains the subject of ongoing debate and he continues to be one of the most controversial figures in Danish political history.

London, Printed by Taylor and Francis - Published by the Author, (1862-) 73 Folio. Papersize 54,5x36,5 cm. Lithographed and fully handcoloured. Two adults, one with prey set in natural surrounding of water.. J. Gould & H.C. Richter, del. et lith. - Walter, Imp. Fine and clean. .The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.
