HENRY, JOSEPH - THE DISCOVERY OF SELF-INDUCTION - GERMAN VERSION.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn44147
(Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1842). Without wrappers. In "Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg. von J.C. Poggendorff", Ergänzungsband 1, Stück 2. Pp. 193-384 a. 1 folded engraved plate. (The entire issue offered). Henry's paper: pp. 282-312. First German version of Henry's description of his discovery of self-induction. He missed the credit for the discovery of induction to Faraday, but he had done the key experiment ahead of Faraday, but Faraday was the first to publish. But he is credited for the discovery of self-induction (1832) and Faraday discovered it independently two years later (1834)."In Henry's paper, however, he explained thet the electric current in a coil can induce another current not only in another coil but in itself. The actual current observed in the coil is, then, the combination of the original current and the induced current. This is called self induction."(Isac Asimov). The issue contains further notable papers Michael Faraday's "Vierzehnte Reihe von Experimental-Untersuchungen über Elektricität", § 2o-22. (Nos 1667-1748). Pp. 249-281. First German version. In this paper FARADAYamplifies his theory of electrostatic induction by making further use of the analogy with the induction of magnetism. Whittaker describes the paper as having "THE FUNDAMENTAL EQUATION OF ELECTROSTATICS", as modified in order to take into account the effect of the specific inductive capacity."(Whittaker I, pp.187-89).

lyn60220
Nurnberg, Endter, 1703. 8vo. Two parts (consecutively paginated) in one contemporary full calf Cambridge-style binding with four raised bands and gilt lettering and ornamentation to spine. Gilt borders to boards. Extremities with wear, a few wormholes to spine and most of the gilt ornamentation worn off. One plate with tear and missing small part of paper in centre. Stamp to front free end-paper, otherwise internally fine and clean. (16), 1222. (50) pp. + frontiespiece and 12 plates (out of 15). First edition of David Nerreter’s translation of the Koran, which forms the second part of the present work. The translation was based on the Maracci-edition from 1696 which replaced Schweigger's earlier German translation (1616). Here Schweigger had used an flawed Italian translation from 1557, so in many ways, the present translation constitutes the first thoroughly reliable German translation of the Koran. The first part discusses the history of Islam and its customs and the second part is devoted to the translation of the Quran.

(New York), American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1960. 8vo. Volume XXXIX, September, No. 5, 1960 of "The Bell System Technical Journal". In the original printed blue wrappers. A small closed tear to upper spine, otherwise an excellent, very nice and clean copy. Numerous 3D-illustrations in black/white. Pp. 1125-1162. The pasted-in small envelope containing the "Lenses for use with "Binocular Depth Perception of Computer-Generated Patterns..." also present, as are the lenses contained in the envelope. [Entire issue: Pp. 1125-1380]. First publication of Julesz' seminal paper on stereograms, which led directly to the 3D visualizations of pop-culture. A stereogram is a two-dimensional image creating a three-dimensional optical illusion. The invention has had profound influence in the entertainment industry with 3D posters and films as well as scientific researching; the two Mars Exploration Rovers, launched by NASA in 2003 to explore the surface of Mars, are both equipped with cameras that allow researchers to view stereoscopic images of the surface of Mars."Julesz (1960) constructed stereograms from a textured pattern of dots randomly positioned in a matrix of cells. The random-dot stereogram (RDS) contained no lines, contours, or edges that could supply monocular information about the shape of the target figure. In an RDS, each eye is presented with a field of randomly distributed dots that essentially disguise the disparity information it provides when the stereogram is viewed dichoptically at the proper fixation distance. [...] To construct an RDS, a random-dot pattern is reproduced so that there is a left and a right half image. A portion of the pattern in the two half-images is altered so as to carry a retinal disparity of dots." Berlin, Verlag von Georg Reimer, 1916. Royal8vo. Bound in a nice contemporary half calf binding with five raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. Stamps to titlepage, otherwise fine. XX, 435 pp. + one folded plate. First German edition of Fisher's seminal work in which he introduced his famous equation of exchange, known as the Fisher Equation. "No other mathematical formulation in economics, perhaps no other in history save that of Albert Einstein, has enjoyed a greater vogue, and this continues without diminution to our own time." (Galbraith. A History of Economics, Pp. 152-3).The Fisher Equation states MV=PT. (M=stock of money, V= the velocity of circulation of money, P=price level, T=amount of transactions carried out using money). In theory this means that by varying the supply of money, while the velocity and the volume of trade remained the same could raise or lower the level of prices. Upward movements could be arrested by reducing the money supply."This was a mojor, even awe-inspiring, step in the history of economics. [...] Later, in the early years of the Great Depression, Fischer and his disciples would be at the center of policy; they would urge and, in some measures, create a plan to arrest the punishing price deflation of the time. [...] With Fisher the long history of money is brought into the modern era."Irving Fisher is regarded as being one of the earliest American neoclassical economists and the first celebrity economist. Fisher was also the first economist to distinguish clearly between real and nominal interest rates and he was by Milton Friedman called "the greatest economist the United States has ever produced."

Geneva / 12-15. Februar 1952". 17 x 11,7 cm. A stamp on the back stating: "Copyright / URS G. ARNI / REPORTER-PHOTOGRAPHIE / 15, R. CHARLES-GIRON TÉL 2.37.55 / GENÈVE". In pencil: "Nils Bohr / atomphysikkonferens / Geneva / 12-15. Februari 1952". The photo depicts an elderly Bohr with a briefcase under his arm in white shirt, tie and three piece suit. The picture shows Bohr participating in what would become one of the most important physic conferences in the second half of the 20th century. Here CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established. Niels Bohr had been one of the central figures in the development of atomic theory in the early 20th century and was the father to the exceedingly important Copenhagen Interpretation. These merits made him the head of the theoretical division of CERN which was located in Copenhagen. "In Geneva the representatives of 12 European governments signed the convention setting up the interim organization, which came into being on 15 February 1952 with the title of "European Council for Nuclear Research", called "CERN" for short after the initials of the French title. Belgium, Denmark, France, the German Federal Republic, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Yugoslavia were then provisionally united to carry out nuclear research. During the whole lifetime of the interim CERN, the United Kingdom remained simply an observer, although the interest shown in the project by that country soon took the shape of new ideas, the provision of consultants and gifts." First printing of Linné's renowned manuscript in which he explained his moral principles, religious faith and his development from a sceptic or unbeliever as young into a believer when he reached maturity. "Linné had left to the care and for the study of his son, and successor as professor in Botany at Uppsala, Carl von Linné, jun., a manuscript, which for a long time was supposed to be lost, but which recently was accidentally found, and deposited in the Academical library at Uppsala. This document, know under the name of "Nemesis Divina", because it principally inculcates the doctrine of a divine retribution, also informs the reader of Linné's moral principles and whole religious faith". Swedish professor Elias Fries published part of the manuscript in the present publication. This Linnean "Nemesis Divina" resembles Swedenborg's "Diarium Spirituale"; Both are written not for their authors contemporaries, but for posterity and both are designed to prove the punishment of evil.Soulsby 1060.
