Landshut, 1806. 8vo. Cont. marbled boards. Title label on spine missing. Wear to capitals w. some loss, corners bumped. Internally minor brownspotting. XXXIV, 178, (1, -Verbesserungen) pp. The scarce first edition on Karl Schelling's rare work on "Life and its Appearance".Karl Eberhard Schelling (1783-1854) was the younger brother of Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling (1775-1854), together with Fichte and Hegel the central thinker of German Idealism. Karl Schelling was a trained physician, who studied in Jena and there attended some of Hegel's lectures (1801-2). He later settled in Stuttgart (1805), as a general practicioner, where he wrote his main, though now forgotten, main work "Über das Leben und seine Erscheinung". In a letter to Hegel, F.W.v. Schelling suggests him to read an article by his brother the physician concerning animal magnetism (in Jahrbücher für Medizin als Wissenschaft, 1807), and it is this topic that is developed in his "On Life and the Appearance of it". Karl Schelling here advances a theory of life that involves a World Soul, in which induvidual souls participate. His theories of aether, sleep and death bear many resemblances to Hegel's philosophy of spirit. It is also Karl Schelling who treats Hegel's sister Christianne, when she falls ill, and it is likely that the treatments (which he is said to have undertaken for free) involved "magnetic" therapy. Hegel himself was very interested in animal magnetism, as his Philosophy of nature also bears witness to. There is no doubt about the fact that Hegel was quite impressed and intrigued with Karl Schelling's now scarcely known but interesting work.

(The entire issue offered). Berzeliu's paper: pp. 5-36. First appearance of a milestone paper in chemistry. In this paper Berzelius drew up the table of atomic weights of the elements, which, with only a few exceptions are similar to those used today. He symbolizes the elements by the first or two letters of the Latin name of the element, and he symbolizes compounds by stting the element symbols together together with the number of atoms involved when grater that one. This is the importent revison of his system announced in 1818."In 1819 Mitscherlich showed that similarity in chemical structure is accompanied by identity of crystalline form (Mitscherlich's law of isomorphism). berzelius realized at once that Mitscherlich's findins called for importent changes in his own system. he accordingly published a new table of atomic weights in 1826 (the paper offered)."(Taton "Science in the 19th Century", p. 279). - Holmberg, Bibliografi öfver Berzelius, nr. 29.

HENRY, JOSEPH - THE DISCOVERY OF SELF-INDUCTION - GERMAN VERSION.

(Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1842). Without wrappers. In "Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg. von J.C. Poggendorff", Ergänzungsband 1, Stück 2. Pp. 193-384 a. 1 folded engraved plate. (The entire issue offered). Henry's paper: pp. 282-312. First German version of Henry's description of his discovery of self-induction. He missed the credit for the discovery of induction to Faraday, but he had done the key experiment ahead of Faraday, but Faraday was the first to publish. But he is credited for the discovery of self-induction (1832) and Faraday discovered it independently two years later (1834)."In Henry's paper, however, he explained thet the electric current in a coil can induce another current not only in another coil but in itself. The actual current observed in the coil is, then, the combination of the original current and the induced current. This is called self induction."(Isac Asimov). The issue contains further notable papers Michael Faraday's "Vierzehnte Reihe von Experimental-Untersuchungen über Elektricität", § 2o-22. (Nos 1667-1748). Pp. 249-281. First German version. In this paper FARADAYamplifies his theory of electrostatic induction by making further use of the analogy with the induction of magnetism. Whittaker describes the paper as having "THE FUNDAMENTAL EQUATION OF ELECTROSTATICS", as modified in order to take into account the effect of the specific inductive capacity."(Whittaker I, pp.187-89).

CARNAP, RUDOLF.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn34801
Chicago, (1947). 8vo. Orig. green full cloth w. gilt lettering to spine. Minor bumping to extremities, otherwise a very nice, clean and fresh copy. VIII, 210 pp. The not common first edition of Carnap's important main work on semantics, in which he, as the first logician ever, uses semantics to explain modalities. This led to a interest in the structure of scientific theories, and his main concerns here were to describe the distinction between analytic and synthetic statements and to suitably formulate the verifiability principle; -he thus wishes to find a criterion of significance that can be applied to scientific language. It is in his "Meaning and Necessity" that Carnap first defines the notions of L-true and L-false (Chapter II). A statement is said to be L-true if its truth depends on semantic rules, and L-false if its negation is L-true. Any statement that is either L-true or L-false is L-determined; analytic statements are L-determined, while synthetic statements are not L-determined. As opposed to the definitions he gives in his "The Logical Syntax of Language", these definitions now apply to semantic in stead of syntactic concepts. It is also in this work that he gives his interesting explanation of his "belief-sentences"Rudolf Carnap (born 1891 in Ronsdorf, Germany, died 1970 in Santa Monica, California) was an immensely influential analytic philosopher, who has contributed decisively to the fields of logic, epistemology, semantics, philosophy of science, and philosophy of language. He was one of the leading figures of the Vienna Circle, and a prominent logical positivist. He studied philosophy, physics and mathematics at the universities of Berlin and Freiburg, and worked at the universities of Jena, Vienna and Prague until 1935, when he, due to the war, emigrated to the U.S., where he became an American citizen in 1941. In America he became professor of the University of Chicago. In Jena he was appointed Professor of Mathematics, though his main interest at that time was in physics. By 1913 he planned to write his dissertation on thermionic emission, but this was interrupted by World War I, where he served at the front until 1917. Afterwards he studied the theory of relativity under Einstein in Berlin, and he developed the theory for a new dissertation, namely on an axiomatic system for the physical theory of space and time. He thus ended up writing the important dissertation under the direction of Bouch on the theory of space (Raum) from a philosophical point of view. After the publication of his first work, Carnap's involvement with the Vienna Circle began to develop. He met Reichenbach in 1923 and was introduced to Moritz Schlick in Vienna, where he then moved to become assistant professor at the university. He soon became one of the leading members of the Vienna Circle, and in 1929 he, Neurath, and Hahn wrote the manifest of the Circle.According to Hintikka, Carnap came extremely close to possible-worlds semantics in his "Meaning and Necessity", but did not succeed, because he was not able to go beyond classical model theory (see "Carnap's heritage in logical semantics" in "Rudolf Carnap, Logical Empiricist").

Zagreb, Izdala "Matica Hrvatska", 1926. 8vo. Uncut, unopened in the original printed wrappers. Light wear to extremities, otherwise a very fine and clean copy. 208 pp. Rare early Croatian translation of Hamlet. Shakespeare's plays in the second half of the 18th century were performed in Croatia when some German theatre companies came to Zagreb and performed several German adaptations including Hamlet. Croatia was first introduced to Shakespeare via German and had, consequently, very little impact on Croatian literature. However, it meant many translations of Shakespeare’s works were published comparative late in Croatia. The translator and the author of a long introduction on Shakespeare was Vinko Kriškovic (1861 - 1952). Born in an affluent Dalmatian family Kriškovic spent many years abroad, studying languages and various cultures. He was known as an intellectual and a translator of Shakespeare’s work. He was a member of the Royal Shakespearean Society and translated 24 of Shakespeare’s works. During the Second world war Kriškovic served as an advisor to the leader of the Nazi sympathising Croatian leader Ante Pavelic. In 1944 he moved to Switzerland on the diplomatic passport, where he remained until the rest of his life.

Nurnberg, Endter, 1703. 8vo. Two parts (consecutively paginated) in one contemporary full calf Cambridge-style binding with four raised bands and gilt lettering and ornamentation to spine. Gilt borders to boards. Extremities with wear, a few wormholes to spine and most of the gilt ornamentation worn off. One plate with tear and missing small part of paper in centre. Stamp to front free end-paper, otherwise internally fine and clean. (16), 1222. (50) pp. + frontiespiece and 12 plates (out of 15). First edition of David Nerreter’s translation of the Koran, which forms the second part of the present work. The translation was based on the Maracci-edition from 1696 which replaced Schweigger's earlier German translation (1616). Here Schweigger had used an flawed Italian translation from 1557, so in many ways, the present translation constitutes the first thoroughly reliable German translation of the Koran. The first part discusses the history of Islam and its customs and the second part is devoted to the translation of the Quran.
