DAVY, HUMPHRY. - FOUNDATION OF ELECTRO-CHEMISTRY - FIRST GERMAN EDITION.

lyn44098
(Halle, Rengerschen Buchhandlung, 1809). Without wrappers. In "Annalen der Physik. Herausgegeben von Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert", Bd. 31, Zweites Stück. Pp. 113-224 a. 1 engraved plate.(The entire issue offered). Davy's paper: pp. 113-177. First German edition of this landmark paper in chemistry, in which Davy shows that electricity is capable of decomposing the most stable chemical combinations. He decomposes some alkalies, isolating two new substances and discovering potassium and sodium. Neville in his Historical Chemical Library vol. I, p.340, writes about this paper "ONE OF THE GREAT CLASSIC RESEARCHES IN CHEMISTRY, in which Davy announced in this, his second Bakterian lecture, the isloation of metallic potassium and sodium by the electrolytic decomposition of their fused oxides.""He (Davy) began his own electrical experiments...The results were spectacular. On October 6, 1807, the current passing through molten potash liberated a metal, which Davy called potassium. The little globules of shining metal tore the water molecule apart as it eagerly recombined with oxygen and the liberated hydrogen burst into lavender flame. Davy danced about in a delirium of joy. A week later he isolated sodium from soda."(Asimow). The paper offered here describes these discoveries."Humphry Davy was one of the most brilliant chemists of the early nineteenth century. His early study of nitrous oxide brought him his first reputation, but his later and most importent investigations were devoted to electrochemistry. Following Galvani's experiments and the discovery of the voltaic pile, interest in galvanic electricity had become widespread. The first electrolysis by means of the pile was carried out in 1800 by Nicholson and Carisle, who obtained oxygen and hydrogen from water. Davy began to examine the chemical effects of electricity in 1800, and his numerous discoveries were presented in his Bakerian lecture to the Royal Society on November 20, 1806.(A Source Book in Chemistry p. 243). - Wheeler Gift: 2514.

DUMAS, (JEAN BAPTISTE-ANDRE). - THE MAIN PAPER ON SUBSTITUTION AND THE THEORY OF TYPES.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn51504
Paris, Bachelier, 1840. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome X , No 5 (entire issue offered). Pp. (143-) 207. Dumas' paper: pp. 149-178. With half-title to Tome X. First appearance of this paper, which was published the same year in 'Annales de Chimie et de Physique', is the most importent on the theory of structural types and the nomenclature of organic compounds, refuting the electrochemical theory of Berzelius. "The development of this idea (type organique) into what is sometimes called the "Older Type Theory", as distinguished from Gerhardt's Type heory, is contained in Dumas' importent memoir on the substitution and the theory of types, presented on 3 February 1840."(Partington IV, p. 365). "Jean Baptiste Dumas advances a theory that the chemical properties of an organic compound are determined by its structure and not, as seems to be the case with inorganic compounds, by its electrical properties. he illustrates the concept with the example that the basic qualitative properties of acetic acid are retained even after replacing three fourths of the hydrogen by chlorine. As a consequence, he calls for a revision of chemical nomenclature for organic compounds, basing terms on common features, not on elemental composition."(Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1840 C).

Geneva / 12-15. Februar 1952". 17 x 11,7 cm. A stamp on the back stating: "Copyright / URS G. ARNI / REPORTER-PHOTOGRAPHIE / 15, R. CHARLES-GIRON TÉL 2.37.55 / GENÈVE". In pencil: "Nils Bohr / atomphysikkonferens / Geneva / 12-15. Februari 1952". The photo depicts an elderly Bohr with a briefcase under his arm in white shirt, tie and three piece suit. The picture shows Bohr participating in what would become one of the most important physic conferences in the second half of the 20th century. Here CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established. Niels Bohr had been one of the central figures in the development of atomic theory in the early 20th century and was the father to the exceedingly important Copenhagen Interpretation. These merits made him the head of the theoretical division of CERN which was located in Copenhagen. "In Geneva the representatives of 12 European governments signed the convention setting up the interim organization, which came into being on 15 February 1952 with the title of "European Council for Nuclear Research", called "CERN" for short after the initials of the French title. Belgium, Denmark, France, the German Federal Republic, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Yugoslavia were then provisionally united to carry out nuclear research. During the whole lifetime of the interim CERN, the United Kingdom remained simply an observer, although the interest shown in the project by that country soon took the shape of new ideas, the provision of consultants and gifts." Lyon, Thomas Amaulry, 1687. 12mo. In contemporary full calf with five raised bands and richly gilt spine. Small paper label pasted on to upper part of spine indicating the inventory number in an estate library. Worm-tract affecting upper margin of Pp. 65-154, slightly affecting text on Pp. 73-110, otherwise a fine copy. (22), 154 pp. + 1 plate. First edition of one of the earliest European work on the technique of using watercolours. Especially in regard to military maps Gautier's technique had a profound influence. His detailed colour-coding made it possible for the cartographer to make a relatively realistic and beautified perception of space and a geometric and strategic one on the same map, one of the reasons why it was soon adopted as a European wide convention. "Henri Gautier (1660-1733) is also known as Gauthier de Nîmes, or Hubert Gauthier, and was the author of fortification and surveyance drawing manuals and treaties. Gautier was the first inspector of the Ponts et Chaussées – the Roads, Canals and Bridges Public Office of the Ancien Regime that promoted France-wide standards and monumental infrastructure works, in its desire for authoritarian control of the French territory. In this technical manual, Gautier applied the code in detail to the many features encountered of washing plans and maps – cultivated agricultural fields or trenches, vineyards or roads, portcullis or parapets. What made this code so precise, however, was not fact that Gautier’s alphabetically ordered abridged guide at the end of his handbook ran for some twenty pages, but that, with a craftsman’s care, he had specified both the intensity of the hue, and the precise pigment used (Gautier 135-54)."

Berlin, Verlag von Georg Reimer, 1916. Royal8vo. Bound in a nice contemporary half calf binding with five raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. Stamps to titlepage, otherwise fine. XX, 435 pp. + one folded plate. First German edition of Fisher's seminal work in which he introduced his famous equation of exchange, known as the Fisher Equation. "No other mathematical formulation in economics, perhaps no other in history save that of Albert Einstein, has enjoyed a greater vogue, and this continues without diminution to our own time." (Galbraith. A History of Economics, Pp. 152-3).The Fisher Equation states MV=PT. (M=stock of money, V= the velocity of circulation of money, P=price level, T=amount of transactions carried out using money). In theory this means that by varying the supply of money, while the velocity and the volume of trade remained the same could raise or lower the level of prices. Upward movements could be arrested by reducing the money supply."This was a mojor, even awe-inspiring, step in the history of economics. [...] Later, in the early years of the Great Depression, Fischer and his disciples would be at the center of policy; they would urge and, in some measures, create a plan to arrest the punishing price deflation of the time. [...] With Fisher the long history of money is brought into the modern era."Irving Fisher is regarded as being one of the earliest American neoclassical economists and the first celebrity economist. Fisher was also the first economist to distinguish clearly between real and nominal interest rates and he was by Milton Friedman called "the greatest economist the United States has ever produced."
