GOULD, JOHN.

lyn43941
London, Printed by Taylor and Francis - Published by the Author, (1862-) 73. Folio. Papersize 52,5x36,5 cm. Lithographed and fully handcoloured. 2 adults in a in a flowering tree. J. Gould & H.C. Richter, del. et lith. - Walter & Cohn, Imp. Fine and clean. A repai to right margin, not affecting image. The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.

HENRY, JOSEPH - THE DISCOVERY OF SELF-INDUCTION - GERMAN VERSION.

lyn44147
(Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1842). Without wrappers. In "Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg. von J.C. Poggendorff", Ergänzungsband 1, Stück 2. Pp. 193-384 a. 1 folded engraved plate. (The entire issue offered). Henry's paper: pp. 282-312. First German version of Henry's description of his discovery of self-induction. He missed the credit for the discovery of induction to Faraday, but he had done the key experiment ahead of Faraday, but Faraday was the first to publish. But he is credited for the discovery of self-induction (1832) and Faraday discovered it independently two years later (1834)."In Henry's paper, however, he explained thet the electric current in a coil can induce another current not only in another coil but in itself. The actual current observed in the coil is, then, the combination of the original current and the induced current. This is called self induction."(Isac Asimov). The issue contains further notable papers Michael Faraday's "Vierzehnte Reihe von Experimental-Untersuchungen über Elektricität", § 2o-22. (Nos 1667-1748). Pp. 249-281. First German version. In this paper FARADAYamplifies his theory of electrostatic induction by making further use of the analogy with the induction of magnetism. Whittaker describes the paper as having "THE FUNDAMENTAL EQUATION OF ELECTROSTATICS", as modified in order to take into account the effect of the specific inductive capacity."(Whittaker I, pp.187-89).

Paris, Crochard, 1831. 8vo. In blank wrappers. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago.", tome 46, Cahier 3. Occassional brownspotting, otherwise fine. Pp. 225-264. First printing of this important paper in which Fresnel formulates a theory of reflection and refraction referring them to the dynamical properties of the luminiferous media and stating the two laws that bears his name, the "Sine-law" and the "Tangent-law".This memoir was for some time considered lost, it was presented to the Academy in 1823, but found later in the papers of Fourier. "Ce Mémoire, qu'on ecroyait égaré, vient d'étre retrouvé dans les papiers de M. Fourier. Comme il n'est connu que par des extraits tout-è-fait insuffisand (voyez Ann.. t. XXIX, p. 175), nous nous empressons d'en enrichir les Annales."(Editor's footnote). In the memoir "He adopts Young's principle, that reflection and refraction are due to differences in the inertia of the aether in different material bodies, and supposes (as in the memoir on aberration) that the inertia is proportional to the inverse square of the velocity of propagation of light in the medium. The conditions which he proposes to satisfy at the interface between two media are that the displacements of the aadjacent molecules, resolved parallell to this interface, shall be equal in the two media; and that the energy of the reflwected and refracted waves together shall be equal to that of the incident wave."(Whittaker "A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity" I, p.123).

lyn60220
Nurnberg, Endter, 1703. 8vo. Two parts (consecutively paginated) in one contemporary full calf Cambridge-style binding with four raised bands and gilt lettering and ornamentation to spine. Gilt borders to boards. Extremities with wear, a few wormholes to spine and most of the gilt ornamentation worn off. One plate with tear and missing small part of paper in centre. Stamp to front free end-paper, otherwise internally fine and clean. (16), 1222. (50) pp. + frontiespiece and 12 plates (out of 15). First edition of David Nerreter’s translation of the Koran, which forms the second part of the present work. The translation was based on the Maracci-edition from 1696 which replaced Schweigger's earlier German translation (1616). Here Schweigger had used an flawed Italian translation from 1557, so in many ways, the present translation constitutes the first thoroughly reliable German translation of the Koran. The first part discusses the history of Islam and its customs and the second part is devoted to the translation of the Quran.

First printing of Linné's renowned manuscript in which he explained his moral principles, religious faith and his development from a sceptic or unbeliever as young into a believer when he reached maturity. "Linné had left to the care and for the study of his son, and successor as professor in Botany at Uppsala, Carl von Linné, jun., a manuscript, which for a long time was supposed to be lost, but which recently was accidentally found, and deposited in the Academical library at Uppsala. This document, know under the name of "Nemesis Divina", because it principally inculcates the doctrine of a divine retribution, also informs the reader of Linné's moral principles and whole religious faith". Swedish professor Elias Fries published part of the manuscript in the present publication. This Linnean "Nemesis Divina" resembles Swedenborg's "Diarium Spirituale"; Both are written not for their authors contemporaries, but for posterity and both are designed to prove the punishment of evil.Soulsby 1060.
