In this memoir Young studied, as perhaps the first, the blood circulation and the function of the heart from a hydrodynamic standpoint, and he predicted that there exist a relationship between arterieal stiffness and pulse wave velocity, a relation which was only confirmed much later."In this lecture from 1808 (the item offered) he discusseas the properties of the circulatory system from a remarkkably modern standpoint. First appearance of Lenard's importent paper on cathode rays for the work on which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1905."After many experiments with aluminium foil of various thickness he was able to publish, in 1894 the paper offered), his great discovery that the plate of quartz that had, until then, been used to close the discharge tube, could be replace by a thin plate of aluminium foil just thick enough to maintain the vacuum inside the tube, but yet thin enough to allow the cathode rays to pass out. It thus became possible to study the cathode rays, and also the fluorescence they caused, outside the discharge tube and Lenard concluded from the experiments that he then did that the cathode rays were propagated through the air for distances of the order of a decimetre and that they travel in a vacuum for several metres without being weakened. Although Lenard at first followed Hertz in believing that the cathode rays were propagated in the ether, he later abandoned this view as the result of the work of Jean Perrin in 1895, Sir J.J. Thermometro Mercurialis..." Pp. 284-290."Lomonosov was founder of Russian science, and he would be universally recognized as a great pioneer of science had he been born a West European. He was famous also for his literary works, including poems and dramas. In 1755 he wrote a Russian Grammar that reformed the language and in the same year he helped found the University of Moscow. Hotchkiss's naval guns originated in the 1880s and were mostly 3 pounders and 6 pounders, and originally were widely used (by Britain, Russia, and the United States amongst others) for close-up defence of major warships against small craft armed with the newly invented locomotive torpedo. When improvements in torpedo range made them obsolete in this role, they continued to be used as small-craft armament up to and including World War II.

(5. rev. udg., 1973, p. 258). P.-M. skriver til hende, efter at have set hende optræde som Nina, en sonnet af samme navn, og afslutter med: "Ovenstående sonnet, der kun svagt udtrykker hvad jeg har følt ved Deres dejlige Nina, beder jeg Dem ikke forkaste; idetmindste lad den tjene Dem til Bevis på, med hvor megen deltagelse jeg har fulgt Deres fremstilling." Leather on spine cracked and small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Upper margin of front board miscoloured, otherwise a nice and clean copy. (14), 1422, (10) pp. + 1 engraved half-title. Exceedingly rare first (only?) edition of Gütner’s devotional work according to the Words of David in Psalm 94:19. We have not been to trace a single copy in the trade. OCLC only list two copies, both in Sweden.

Edges of boards gilt. All edges gilt. Small paper-label pasted on to spine. A few wormholes to back board, leather on spine cracked, cornes bumped. A few small worm-tracts to last leaves. Last two blanks with annotations in contemporary hand. Internally generally nice and clean. (22), 104, 112, 142, 110, 84, (4) pp. (Including three blanks in the front and back). First German translation of "Danish Law" which became a prototype and inspiration for other European codexes. The English envoy to Denmark at the time, Robert Molesworth, praises the Danish Code in his otherwise highly negative text: "An account of Denmark as it was in the year 1692". He states that in justice, brevity and clarity, the Code surpasses all other legal texts he knows of. It is so clear and simple to understand, that any literate person can understand his case and is able to represent himself in Court if he so wishes. Thesaurus II: 431.

Most of the views lithographed by Riviere, but also some by Bachelier and Lemercier. No text called for. Detailled lithographic views of Paris in the year of the Exposition in 1878.

Uncommon first edition of this early account of the life of Christina of Sweden (1626-1689), daughter of the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf (1594-1632) “Christina (born Dec. 8, 1626, Stockholm, Swed.—died April 19, 1689, Rome [Italy]) was the queen of Sweden (1644–54) who stunned all Europe by abdicating her throne. She subsequently attempted, without success, to gain the crowns of Naples and of Poland.
