Edinburgh & Oxford, 1952, 1956 + 1963. All three articles are present in the entire orig. volumes, all in the orig. wrappers. The two volumes of "Mind" are in the orig. printed grey wrappers and the "Philosophical Essays" is in the orig. green full cloth w. the orig. d-j. in very good condition w. only a few smaller tears to upper capital and upper front wrapper, not price-clipped. Internally mint. Mind Vol. LXXII, No. 285 w. a tear to back, else very fine. Mind Vol. LXV, No. 259 w. some signs of wear, especially to extremities, but a fine and internally very clean copy. This set comprises the entire "Logische Untersuchungen" in the first English language translations. In the foreword to "Compound Thoughts", the translator notes: "This article, entitled "Logische Untersuchungen. Dritter Teil: Gedankenfüge", was published in the "Beiträge zur Philosophie des deutschen Idealismus, III (1923), 36-51. The first two parts of these "logical investigations" were "Der Gedanke" (Beiträge I (1819), trans. "The Thought" in MIND LXV (1956) ) and "Die Verneinung" (Beiträge I (1919), trans. "Negation" in Geach and Black (ed.) "Translations from the Philosophical Writings of Gottlob Frege."). The three articles that constitute the Logical Investigations are some of the most important, influential and widely discussed of Frege's philosophical papers. In 1875 the entire "Logical Investigations" appeared together in English translation for the first time. It was Frege's wish that these three articles were viewed as a whole and published together under the title of "Logische Untersuchungen", now considered a work of the utmost importance. These three volumes also comprise many other articles by Frege in the first English translations (in Translations from the Philosophical Writings of Gottlob Frege) as well as original contributions by P.T. Geach: "On Frege's Way Out" (in Mind Vol. LXV, No. 259. and "Mr. Strawson on Symbolic and Traditional Logic" (in Mind Vol. LXXII, No. 285).Friedrich Ludwig Gottlob Frege (1848 - 1925) was a German mathematician, but his main contributions lie in his becoming a logician and a philosopher, who influenced the fields of logic and analytic philosophy immensely. Together with Wittgenstein, Russel and Moore, Frege is considered the founder of analytic philosophy, and a main founder of modern mathematical logic. His influence on 20th century philosophy has been profound, especially in the English speaking countries from the middle of the 20th century and onwards; in this period most of his works were translated into English for the first time. The philosophical papers of Frege were published in Germany in scholarly journals, which were barely read outside of German speaking countries. The first collections of his writings did not appear untill after the the Second World War, and Frege was little known as a philosopher during his lifetime. He greatly influenced the likes of Russel, Wittgenstein and Carnap, though, and bears a great responsibility for the turn modern philosophical thought has taken. Due to his contributions to the philosophy of language, analytic philosophy could be founded as it were.

HERSCHEL, WILLIAM. - THE DYNAMICAL THEORY OF STARS AND NEBULAE.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn42810
(London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1811 a.1814). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" Year 1811-Part II. 269-336 and 2 engraved plates showing the shapes of 42 nebulae and star-clusters. And 1814 - Part I. Pp. 248-84 a. 1 engraved plate. Both fine and clean. First appearance of two milestone papers in cosmology in which Herschel demonstrates the irregular distribution of the stars in space, and "for the first time recognized that the clusters in and near the Milky Way really belonged to it, and were not independent systems that happened to lie in the same direction as seen by us."(Berry, Short History of Astronomy, p. 340)."In 1811 and 1814 (the papers offered) he published a complete theory of a possible process wherby the shining fluid consisting a diffused nebula might gradually condense - the denser portions of it being centres of attraction - first into a denser nebula or compressed star cluster, then into one or more nebulous stars, lastly into a single star or group of stars. Every supposed stage in this process was abundantly illustrated from records of actual nebulae and clusters which he had observed."(Berry)."Illustrated with many examples at every stage, these papers (1811 a. 1814) showed brilliantly how dynamic changes can be inferred from virtually static evidence; and Herschel concluded by characterizing the Milky Way in its present stage of dissolution as "this mysterious chronometer". (DSB VI, p. 333). A paper by Henry Kater attached: "Further Experiments on the Light of the Cassegrainian telescope compared with that of the Georgian". 1814. Pp. 231-247.

CURIE, JACQUES et PIERRE. - THE DISCOVERY OF PIEZOELECTRICITY.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn47008
Paris, Gauthier-Villars, 1880. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome 91, No 5 (entire issue offered). Pp. 251-310. The Curie's paper: pp. 294-295. First apperance of the paper in which the two brothers announced their discovery of the Piezoelectric Effect, as they observed how an electric potential appeared across crystals of quartza and of Rochelle salt when pressure was applied to them. The potential varied directly with the pressure, and they named the phenomenon Piezoelectricity, meaning "to press" (Greek). Crystals with piezoelectric properties form an essential portion of sound-electronics devices such as microphones and record-players."The applications of piezoelectric crystals are innumerable; one of the most important is their use in frequency stabilization of oscillating electromagnetic cirasciots for radio broadcasting stations. They are used in most piezometers for measuring with great precision either very strong pressure variations, such as those of a cannon at the moment of firing, or very weak ones, such as artery pulsations. These applications have led to the creation of a new industry, the manufacture of large "mono" such as quartz obtained hydrothermally around 500°C. under high water pressures, or crystals such as Rochelle salt, obtained from aqueous solutions. These two substances were mentioned in the Curie brothers’ report announcing the discovery of piezoelectricity." (DSB)."The first experimental demonstration of a connection between macroscopic piezoelectric phenomena and crystallographic structure was published in 1880 by Pierre and Jacques Curie. Their experiment consisted of a conclusive measurement of surface charges appearing on specially prepared crystals (tourmaline, quartz, topaz, cane sugar and Rochelle salt among them) which were subjected to mechanical stress. These results were a credit to the Curies' imagination and perseverance, considering that they were obtained with nothing more than tinfoil, glue, wire, magnets and a jeweler's saw." RABIN, M. O.

Providence, Rhode Island, The American Mathematical Society, 1969. Royal8vo. In the original blue printed wrappers. In "Transactions of the American Mathematical Society", Volume 141, July, 1969. Entire issue offered. Spine faded and a few bumps to extremities, otherwise fine and clean. Pp. 1-35. [Entire volume: (4), 527 pp.]. First printing of Rabin's landmark paper in which he introduced his infinite tree automaton; a state machine that deals with infinite tree structure. It can be viewed as an extension from a finite tree automaton, which accepts only finite tree structures. Here he proved that the second-order theory of n successors is decidable; A key component of the proof implicitly showed determinacy of parity games, which lie in the third level of the Borel hierarchy. It was used by Rabin for proving decidability of monadic second order logic. It has been further observed that tree automaton and logical theories are closely connected and it allows decision problems in logic to be reduced into decision problems for automaton.

Small stamps on verso of titlepage. In: "Annales de Chimie, ou Recueil de Mémoires concernant la Chemie" Tome 70. 336 pp. (Entire volume offered). Davy's paper: pp. 189-254. First edition in French (the first English 1808) of this importent historical paper in chemistry, in which Davy shows that electricity is capable of decomposing some alkalies, isolating two new substances and discovering potassium and sodium. Neville in his Historical Chemical Library vol. I, p.340, writes about this paper "ONE OF THE GREAT CLASSIC RESEARCHES IN CHEMISTRY, in which Davy announced in this, his second Bakterian lecture, the isloation of metallic potassium and sodium by the electrolytic decomposition of their fused oxides.""He (Davy) began his own electrical experiments...The results were spectacular. On October 6, 1807, the current passing through molten potash liberated a metal, which Davy called potassium. The little globules of shining metal tore the water molecule apart as it eagerly recombined with oxygen and the liberated hydrogen burst into lavender flame. Davy danced about in a delirium of joy. A week later he isolated sodium from soda."(Asimow). The paper offered here describes these discoveries."Humphry Davy was one of the most brilliant chemists of the early nineteenth century. His early study of nitrous oxide brought him his first reputation, but his later and most importent investigations were devoted to electrochemistry. Following Galvani's experiments and the discovery of the voltaic pile, interest in galvanic electricity had become widespread. The first electrolysis by means of the pile was carried out in 1800 by Nicholson and Carisle, who obtained oxygen and hydrogen from water. Davy began to examine the chemical effects of electricity in 1800, and his numerous discoveries were presented in his Bakerian lecture to the Royal Society on November 20, 1806. (A Source Book in Chemistry p. 243).

First edition. "During his period in Berlin he produced an extraordinary series of papers on astronomy, on general dynamics, and on a variety of subjects in pure mathematics. Several of the most importent of the astronomical papers were sent to Paris and obtained prizes offred by the Academy."(Arthur Berry). "Lagrange's work in Berlin far surpassed the classical aspects of classical mechanics. Soon after his arrival he presented "Memoire sur la Passage de Venus du 3 Juin 1769", an occasional work that disconcerted the professional astronomers and contained the first somewhat extended example of an elementary astronomical problem solved by the method of three rectangular coordinates." (DSB). The analyses of this Venus transit was meant to provided data for estimating the sun-earth distance as the Venus went across the disk of the sun.
