BOHR, NIELS - NAMING "THE PRINCIPLE OF CORRESPONDENCE"
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn48726
Braunschweig, Vieweg & Sohn, 1920. Contemp. Hcloth. Stamp on titlepage. In "Zeitschrift für Physik", Bd. 2. IV,478 pp. (Entire volume offered). Bohr's paper: pp. 423-469. A very faint dampstain to right margins. First edition of this fundamental paper in which Bohr for the first time gives name to a theory, which was for the first time used in his work "The quantum theory of line Spectra" from 1918, but now for the first time called "Korrespondenzprincip" (The Principle of Correspondence) and explained in the offered paper. The principle was introduced "in order to obtain the necessary relation to the ordinary theory of radiation in the limit of slow vibrations we are therefore led directlyto certain conclusions about the probability of transition between two stationary states in this limit.".The "Principle of Correspondence" is the physical priciple that the behaviour of atomic and other systems should approximate to that predicted by classical physics in certain specific circumstances where quantum effects are expected to be unimportent. Bohr used the principle to explain his theory of the hydrogen atom, which among other things successfully predicted many features of the spectrum of light emitted by energetic hydrogen atoms. The principle formed an importent component of the early quantum theory of Bohr, Sommerfeld and others.Betty Schultz: 17.

Leipzig, J.A. Barth, 1910. Contemp. hcalf. Spine gilt, a fs scratches to spine. VIII,1584 pp. and 6 plates. Einstein papers: pp. 1096: pp. 1105-1115; pp. 1275-1298. Fine and clean. The whole volume offered. All three papers first edition. The purpose of "A theorem in probability and its application in the Theory of radiation" is to demonstrate that the failure of statistical mechanics with respect to the radiation law (Rayleigh - Jeans law, contradicted by experience) cannot be removed by the conjecture that perhaps the individual statistical events should not follow the usual law of independence (product of probabilities) instead of assuming a certain interdependence between them. (Lanczos). The second paper "Statistical investigation on of the motion of an oscillator in a radiation field", makes use of the results of the previous investigation. Einstein's aim is to demonstrate that the Rayleigh-jeans law of radiation (contracdicted by the physical facts) is an unavoidable consequence of statistics, even if we avoid any kind of assumption which may be suspected of needing correction. (Lanczos). The third paper "Theory of the opalescence of homogenous fluids and fluid mixtures near the critical state" is an importent investigation and one of the most difficult of all his papers to understand. The aim of the paper is to complement the work of Smoluchovski (Ann. d. Physik,25, 1908) who gave a general explanation of the strong density fluctuations - and the opalescence thus generated - of two fluids near the critical state of mixture (or a single fluid near the critical state of condensation) on the basis of the kinetic theory of heat. he did notgive, however, the quantitative details concerning the scattered light associated with this phenomenon. (Lanczos). - Weil Nos 34, 35 and 36 (with an asterix denoting major work).

Leipzig, Siegfried Lebrecht Crusius, 1769-(79). Folio. Contemp. hcalf. Gilt spine. Large tears to spine. Coverpaper partly gone. Binding rubbed and worn. Large engraved titlevignette. 2 half-page engraved vignettes. (14),154;(2),88 pp. and 39 (of 40) handcolured and engraved plates. Some dampstaing to upper right corners of textleaves. Some dampstaining and foxing to upper right corners of plates, especially towards end. The last two plates with some loss of paper at upper right corners. Engraved booplate on inside frontcover "John Diderich Cordes" Scarce first edition of Schreber's classic work on grasses, which became of importance due to its very elaborate explanations of all aspects of the numerous grasses mentioned and depicted in the 40 plates (here only 39), which are considered very well executed, both in regard to drawing, engraving, and colouring. Schreber (1739-1810) was a German physician and natural scientist. He became famous for his diverse knowledge and for his scientific works within botany and zoology. He studied medicine and natural science in Uppsala, Sweden, where he became doctor of medicine and made the acquaintance of Carl von Linné, whom he learned a lot from. In 1787 he became a member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences. In Germany he became professor of medicine, botany, natural history, and pharmacology at Erlangen, director of Erlangen botanical garden, and president of the Leopoldina. His work on grasses was considered fairly important, especially due to its very elaborate explanations of all parts of the particular grasses, its use, conditions, etc. etc.(See Stafleu & Covan, V : p. 328 and No 11.127) - Nissen: 1807. - Pritzel: 8395. - Not in Hunt.

Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1903. Contemp. hcloth. Some small nicks to spine. (=) "Annalen der Physik. Vierte Folge. Band 11. Herausgegeben von Paul Drude.". VIII,1144pp. and 6 plates. The Einstein paper: pp. 170-187. Internally fine and clean. First edition of Einsteins fourth paper. In his paper from 1902, Einstein "says in his introduction that nobody has yet succeeded in deriving the conditions of thermal equilibrium and of the second law of thermodynamics from probability considerations, although Maxwell and Boltzmann came near to it. Willard Gibbs is not mentioned. In fact, Einstein's paper was written in ignorance of Gibbs paper published 1901. In the present paper, Einstein builds the theory on another basis not used by Gibbs, namely on the consideration of a single system in course of time (later called "Zeit-Gesamtheit", time assembly), and proves that this is equivalent to a certain virtual assembly of many systems, Gibb's micro-canonical assembly...Einstein at once proceeded to apply his theorems to a case of utmost importance, namely to systems of a size suited for demonstrating the reality of molecules and the correctness of the kinetic theory of matter."(Walter Alicke). - Weil No. 4.

Lund, Jørgen Schrøder, 1675. 12mo. In contemporary full calf with four raised bands. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Binding with light wear and a few holes in the leather. Margins closely trimmed, first leaves slightly touching text in upper margin, otherwise internally nice and clean. (2), 494, (6) pp. Exceedingly rare second Danish translation of Gerhard’s “Meditationes”, first translated into Danish in 1614. Until recently it was believed only the first translation and a second in 1737 was published (also stated in Ehrencron-Müller and Bibliotheca Danica). This present 1675-edition, printed in Lund by Jørgen Schrøder, is one of the few Danish books produced in Scania after the cession to Sweden in 1658. Schrøder operating from Bishop Peder Vinstrup’s press at Värpinge outside Lund, became the sole printer in the city when the Scanian War broke out that year and his rival Vitus Haberegger fled to Malmö. At Vinstrup’s likely instigation, Schrøder issued this Danish translation of Johann Gerhard’s Meditationes, the first since the now-unobtainable 1614 edition. (Tunold, S. Nyfundne eldre Danica i Oslo, 1963, p. 38). OCLC only list two copies. Not in Biblioteca Danica nor Ehrencron-Müller.

Other birds in the background. J. Gould & H.C. Richter, del. et lith. - Walter & Cohn, Imp. Fine and clean. The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.

The modern theory of differential geometry grew up in the years following Einstein's introduction of his general theory of relativity, by the work of Elie Cartan (his Géométrie des espaces de Riemann) and Herman Weyl."Cartan was one of the most profound mathematicians of the last hundred years, and his influence is still one of the most decisive in the development of modern mathematics...Cartan's contributions to differential geometry are no less impressive, and it may be said that he revitalized the whole subject, for the initial work of Riemann and Darboux was being lost in dreary computations and minor results...his guiding principle was a considerable extension of the method of "moving frames" of Darboux and Ribaucooour, to which he gave a tremendous flexibility and power, far beyond anything that had been done in classical differential geometry." Internally very nice and clean. (32), 716, 32 pp. + folded double-page title-page. Rare first edition of Leiningen’s main work being an interpretation of the Apocalypse of John. The last book of the Bible had been removed from the preaching canon by Luther due to its interpretive difficulties, however, in pietistic circles, it became a central text precisely because of its speculative nature. Amalia von Leiningen (1684-1756) was convinced that she was living in the end times and awaited the Second Coming of the Lord, as prophesied in the Gospels and the Apocalypse.OCLC list no copies in the US.

Old discrete owner's name to title-page, dated 1809. Four leaves w. cont. marginal annotations and underlinings. Internally well-preserved. (2), 83, (1, errata), (2, -blank) + (4), 321, (1, -Verbesserungen) pp. Scarce first editions of these two fundamental works of Shelling's philosophy of nature. In his early works (1795-1800), Schelling sets out to give a new account of nature, and his "Erster Entwurf..." together with the "Einleitung..." for it are placed at the centre of this attempt. At the basis of his philosophy of nature is the status that Kant had given nature, but Schelling tries to avoid some of the consequences that come with Kant's notion. He is also largely inspired by Fichte's transcendental philosophy, and in the last five years of the 19th century, Schelling is thus occupied with the relationship of the subject to the object world, -a theme that comes to found the basis for his so famous philosophy of nature. At first Fichte and Schelling stood on good terms, but as their different conceptions of nature became evident, the divergences between them became too great. As Fichte regarded nature as Not-Self, this could not be a valid subject of philosophy, and he refused to understand Schelling's philosophy of nature as complementary to his own transcendental philosophy.Schelling's philosophy of nature presents us with a modern hermeneutic view of nature, allowing nature to be of significance beyond what can be scientifically established about it. Along with J.G. Fichte and Hegel, Schelling ranks as the most influential thinker of German Idealism. He stands in the centre of this most important and influential of philosophical traditions, and with his philosophy of nature, his anti-Cartesian view of subjectivity and his later critique of Hegelian Idealism, Schelling continues to be of the utmost importance to the development of continental philosophy to this day.

Internally fine and clean. First appearance in German - prepared by Faraday himself for publication in Annalen, except 28. and 29. Reihe, which is translations from the ahortened papers from "Proceedings". Here Faraday investigates many electro-magnetic phenomena, tries to unite the different forces of nature, revises his theory of diamagnetic bodies, discovers magnetocrystallic effects, defines his key concept "lines of force" etc. etc. From 1831 to 1852 Michael Faraday published his "Experimental Researches in Electricity" in The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. These papers contain not only an impressive series of experimental discoveries, but also a collection of heterodox theoretical concepts on the nature of these phenomena expressed in terms of lines of forces and fields. He published 30 papers in all under this general title. They represents Faraday's most importent work, are classics in both chemistry and physics and are the experimental foundations for Maxwell's electro-magnetic theory of light, using Faraday's concepts of lines of force or tubes of magnetic and electrical forces. His many experiments on the effects of electricity and magnetism presented in these papers lead to the fundamental discoveries of 'induced electricity' (the Farday current), the electronic state of matter, the identity of electricity from different sources, equivalents in electro-chemical decomposition, electrostatic induction, hydro-electricity, diamagnetism, relation of gravity to electricity, atmospheric magnetism and many other."Among experimental philosophers Faraday holds by universal consent the foremost place. The memoirs in which his discoveries are enshrined will never ceaseto be read with admiration and delight; and future generations will preserve with an affection not less enduring the personal records and familiar letters, which recall the memory of his humble and unselfish spirit."(Edmund Whittaker in A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity).

They are a form of shading, although different from the one used in shaded maps. - Poggendorffr I, 1410.
