Frederik Rostgaard was born at the Krogerup estate in North Zealand. Upon his father's death in 1684, he was orphaned, but the financial situation was good, allowing him to receive a thorough education and higher education. After staying with the rector of the Copenhagen School, Peder Foss, he was privately tutored by him in 1687. He had Willum Worm, later a justice of the Supreme Court, as his guardian. Being wealthy, he pursued various independent studies, enjoyed visiting libraries, and began, as a very young student, to collect the works of Bording and other Danish poets, especially those in Latin. After a few short trips to Scania and Northern Germany, he traveled abroad in 1690, where he stayed for the next nine years. He first stayed in Germany, especially in Giessen, where his main study was jurisprudence, but he also studied Arabic at the same time. In the spring of 1692, he traveled to the Netherlands, making Leiden his main residence, and although he did not abandon law, it was linguistics that occupied him for the remainder of his stay abroad. It was during this trip he saw the opportunity to publish his collections of Latin poems by Danish authors. Some scattered brownspots. First French edition - in the authors own form and translation - of Mitcherlich's announcment of his discovery of Isomorphism, stating that similar crystalline form reflect analogous chemical formulae, which Berzelius used in fixing the formulas of compounds. Mitcherlich was at this time an assistent to Berzelius, and the first printing of this classical paper appeared the same year in Akad. Handl., Stockholm. The paper was soon afterward printed in French (the paper offered) and English, and Berzelius discussed it in his "Jahresbericht", so that the work quickly became known. - Leicester & Klickstein pp. 306-08."The statement of the law of isomorphism...marks Mitscherlich's most importent contribution to chemistry - indeed, Berzelius considered Mitscherlich's discovery to be the most significant since that of chemical proportions. Berzelius himself found Mitscherlich's work to be of great use; he was at that time concerned with the determination of the atomic weights of the elements amd the law of isomorphism provided him with a valuable tool....Berzeluius' task was simplified by the application of Mitscherlich's law..."(DSB IX, p. 424).

London, Chapman and Hall, 1840-1841. Bound in 3 uniform contemporary half calfs with gilt lettering and ornamentation to spines. Hinges with minor wear and a few nicks to the leather on the boards, otherwise a fine and clean copy. First edition of the three-volume edition (Printed same year as the original 20 monthly parts) of Master Humphrey's Clock, a weekly periodical edited and written by Charles Dickens and published from April 4, 1840-December 4, 1841. "The publication of these stories in the form presented was one of the first of several experiments which the Author applied to several succeeding books. Dickens feared that his readers had become weary of stories in monthly issues on account of the lapse of time between the numbers. At the request of Chapman & Hall he outlined his planspartially in a letter when he wrote among other things: "To introduce a little club or knot of characters and to carry their personal histories and proceedings through the work; to introduce fresh characters constantly; to re-introduce Mr. Pickwick and Sam Weller; x x x to write amusing essays on the various foibles of the as they form of the papers by throwing them into sketches, letters from imaginary correspondents, and so forth, so as to diversify the contents as much as possible." (Eckel, p. 67).Hatton and Cleaver, Pp. 163-182.

Leaves reinforced in margin. (2), 91-88 pp. First appearance of Herschel's seminal paper in which he stated: "The nature of planetary nebulae, which has hitherto been involved in much darkness, may now be explained with some degree of satisfaction, since the uniform and very considerable brightness of their apparent disk accords remarkably well with a much condensed, luminous fluid; whereas to suppose them to consist of clustering stars will not so completely account for the milkiness or soft tint of thir light, to produce which it would be required for that condensation of the stars should carried to an almost inconceivable degree of accumulation." (Leipzig, Ambrosius Barth, 1918). Without wrappers in "Annalen der Physik", Vierte Folge, Bd. 51, No.17 a. 18. The entire issues offered. Pp. 1-124 a. pp. 125-236. Sommerfeld's papers: pp. 1-94 a. pp. 125-167. Punched in inner margins after cords. Clean and fine. First appearance of Sommerfeld's main contribution to Quantum Theory, incorporating the "Sommerfeld Model" of the atom and his creation of a general theory of spectral lines based on quantum concepts."In the winter Semester 1914/15 his topic was the Bohr model. He extended it considerably and was able to find a number of new results which were published early in 1916 (in the paper offered). The gist of Bohr's theory was the fact that it allowed only certain electron orbits. Sommerfeld tried to find the "quantum conditions" by which these orbits could be singled out from the classically allowed ones."(Siegmund Brandt "The harvest of a Century", Episode 27, p. 110 ff.)."This extraordinary extension, enrichment, and precision of Bohr's theory by Sommerfeld contributed decisively to its rapid and widespread acceptance. Only five years after Bohr's first publicatuion Sommerfeld, recognizing that the mathematical development of thsi quantum-theoretical atomic model had reached a conclusion of sorts, undertook a comprehensive exposition of the field. His "Atombau und Spektrallinien", of which the first edition appeared late in 1919, immediately became the bible of atomic physics and its successive editions, appearing almost annually in the early 1920's, chronicled the progress of this field up to the eve of quantum mechanics."(DSB XII, p. 529).The offered papers contains also 2 importent contribution in the same field by Sommerfeld's pupils: Paul S. Epstein "Zur Quantentheorie" pp. 168-188 and J. Stark: "Der Träger der Haupt- un Nebenserien der Alkalien, alkalischen Erden und des Heliums", pp. 220-236.
