(London, Harrison and Sons, 1883). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" Year 1882, Volume 173 - 1883. - Pp. 863-883 and 1 plate. Margin of plate with small tears.Otherwise clean and fine. First appearance of the first paper describing the invention of the seismograph to record earthquakes."Milne studied at the Royal School of Mines and became mining engineer. He joined an Expedition to Arabia as a geologist. His real chance came in 1875, however, when he accepted an appointment as a professor of geology and mining in the Imperial College of Engineering at Tokyo. He remained in Japan for twenty years and there had a marvelous opportunity to study earthquakes, for no land is more riven with them than Japan. In 1880 he invented the seismograph...and established a chain of seismographs in Japan and elsewhere, marking the beginning of modern seismology."(Asimow).The paper describes 8 sets of experiments set up at different stations in Japan. On Milne's initiative the Seismological Society of Japan was founded, and the emperor of Japan conferred upon him the Order of the Rising Sun.

ZERMELO, ERNST FRIEDRICH FERDINAND.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn44952
Leipzig, B.G. Teubner, 1904. 8vo. Bound in half cloth with five raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. In "Mathematische Annalen. Begründet 1868 durch von A. Clebsch und C. Neumann. 59. Band." Small bar-code pasted on to top left corner of front wrapper. Two library labels pasted on to pasted down front free end-paper and a small stamp to verso of title page. Pp. 514-16. First appearence of this fundamental paper in metamathematics and mathematical logic in which he introduced both "The Axiom of Choice" and "his sensational proof of the well-ordering theorem" (DSB). By this paper Zermelo contributed decisively to the development of set-theory. Zermelo took up the problem, left over by Cantor, of what to do about the comparison of sets that are not well-ordered. "In 1904 (the paper offered) he proved....that every set can be well-ordered. To make the proof he had to use what is now known as the axiom of choice (Zermelo's axiom), which states that given any collection of nonempty, disjoined sets, it is possible to choose one member from each set and so make up a new set. The axiom of choce, the well-ordering theorem, and the fact that any two sets may be compared as to size, are equivalent principles."(Morris Kline). A controversy arose around "The axiom of Choice", from Bertrand Russell, Tarski, Frege, Hilbert, Brouwer and others, mainly, and of course importent, over how to interpret the words "choose" and "exists".The issue also contain the following papers of interest:David Hilbert. Über das dirichletsche prinzip. Pp. 161-186.Lie, Sophus. Drei Kapitel aus dem unvollendeten zweiten Bande der Geometrie der Berührungstransformationen. Pp. 193-313.Schoenflies, A. Beitrage zur Theorie der Punktmengen II, Pp. 129-160.

(Paris, Crochard, 1823). 8vo. Without wrappers as extracted from: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago.", Vol. 22, pp. 375-389. First appearance of this paper, revealing the results of experiments with the galvanic elements, using pairs of small antimony and bismuth bars welded in series, which Oersted performed together with Fourier during his visit to Paris. This constitutes the invention of the first thermo-electrical pile. Oersted and Fourier had found that heat had a significant effect upon the performance of the galvanic element. - "Seebeck seems to have had another theory about this. However, I have experimented with the matter, and found the conjecture correct. I believe that this discovery will be of far-reaching consequence. The laws for this new effects are, I suppose, in reality the same as for the galvanic battery; yet this looks so different that I have been obliged to spend a great deal of my time during the last fortnight in discovering and defining them...". In a letter of somewhat later date to prince Christian, he states that he has made the experiments "in conjunction with Fourier, the secretary of the mathematical department of the Institute". Oersted, when reading this paper to the Academy on 31st of March 1823, proposed the name "thermo-electric" for these currents, a name which has since been adopted everywhere. Ronalds Catalogue p. 374. - Ørsted, Works II, p. 272. Stitched together with this paper is "Extrait d'une Lettre de M. Ampere à M. Faraday". Pp. 389-400. First printing. Dealing with electricity.

Kjøbenhavn, Bianco Luno, 1869-73. 4to. Bound in one contemp. hcloth. Around 300 pp., plates. Some brownspots. First edition of Thomsens main contributions in thermochemistry, undoubtly the most importent contribution from a Dane in chemistry in the 19th century. - The construction of a complete and quantitative system of thermochemistry required an extensive and accurate collection of thermochemical data over and above the observations upon which the principle was based. The amount of data which he amassed was so great that it enabled him the calculation of heats of reaction for practically speaking every fairly common inorganic reaction. The results, which are based between three and four thousand measurements, were later collected in his famous work "Thermochemische Untersuchungen" (The Danish original oferred here).
