lyn49580
Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1823. 8vo. Contemp. hcalf. Gilt spine and with gilt lettering. Some scratches to spine. In: "Annalen der Physik und der Physikalischen Chemie. Hrsg. Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert", Bd. 13 (= Bd. 73 der Reihe). (12),444 pp., 1 folded table and 5 engraved plates. Small stamp to verso of titlepages. Internally clean and fine. Wöhler's paper: pp. 157-172. First printing of Wöhler's importent paper in which he in reality for the first time synthezised an organic substance, leading to his historic preparation of "artificial" urea in 1828 "Ueber künstliche Bildung des Harnstoffs". This broke down the old distinction between organic and inorganic substances. "This was the first synthesis of an organic compound, and this accomplishment is generally regarded as the beginning of organic chemistry."(Sparrow "Milestones of Science", p.37, the 1828 paper)."In his published paper (the 1828 paper) Wöhler referred to his work of 1823 (the offered paper), in which he had shown that cyanogen and aqueous ammonia yielded oxalic acid and a white crystalline solid that he now realized was urea. This, and his new method, he considered to be remarkable examples of the preparation "by art" of a substance of animal origin from inorganic materials."(DSB).The volume contains other notable papers BECQUEREL: "Ueber die Electricitäts-Erregung durc Druck, nach versuchen des herrn becquerel; ein bericht abgestatt.... von Biot. Frei übersetzt von Gilbert", pp. 117-129. A pioneer paper on Piezoelectricity. MYRDAL, GUNNAR.

lyn35305
New York & London, Harper & Brothers Publishers, (1944). Royal 8vo. Orig. full green cloth w. gilt lettering to spine. Some soiling and wear to binding. Internally fine. LIX, (1), 1483 pp. First edition of this epoch-making study of race-relations in America. The first edition appeared in both one volume and in two volumes. This is the one-volume edition. In the early 1940'ies the Swedish Nobel Prize winner for Economics (1974), Gunnar Myrdal (1898-1987) was funded by the Carnegie Foundation to map out the problems that African-Americans had to face in order to fully participate in the American society at the time. This resulted in an enormous and very detailed work, for which Myrdal is famous today. It immediately became very popular, and it sold more than 100.000 copies (25 printings of the first edition appeared) before the second edition appeared in 1965. Several other editions and extracts in other publications appeared before 1965. Nine issues of the work appeard within the first year. The work had an enormous direct effect on the general view on racial issues in America, and it must be said to have paved the way for what we now consider natural policies of racial integration and affirmative action. The view that underlies this landmark work is that democracy will triumph over racism. The effects of this work are difficult to underestimate, and it not only changed the view on racial issues in America, it also directly influenced the US Supreme Court in 1954 to outlaw racial segregation in public schools (Brown versus Board of Education). In 1950 Myrdal was a signatory of the UNESCO statement "The Race Question".Assarsson-Rizzi and Bohrn: Gunnar Myrdal. A Bibliography, 1919-1981: No. 127a.

PASTEUR, LOUIS. - REVEALING A NEW KIND OF ISOMERISM.

lyn47267
(Paris, Bachelier),1853. 4to. No wrappers. In: "Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences", Tome XXXVII, No. 5. Pp. (145-) 196. (Entire issue offered). Pasteur's paper: pp. 162-166. First appearance of a milestone paper in chemistry in which Pasteur announced two momentous importent discoveries, that racemic acid could be separated into the two optically active tartaric acids and the discovery of "mesotartaric" acid. For his work on racemic acid and crystallography he received the prize of 1,500 francs from the Société de pharmacie (1853), membership in the Legion of Honor, and the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society (1856)."During this journey (travel to Vienna, Prag and Saxony) Pasteur met a German industrial chemist who claimed to have achieved what Pasteur then considered impossible - the chemical transformation of tartaric into racemic acid. Although he soon confirmed his belief that this particular claim was inaccurate, Pasteur unexpectedly achieved the transformation in May 1853 by heating cinchonine tartrate at 170°C. for five to six hours. This procedure also yielded a small amount of inactive "mesotartaric" acid, the existence of which Pasteur had predicted the year before and in search of which he had apparently undertaken the experiment. In the memoir (1 August 1853) in which he announced these two discoveries, Pasteur disclosed a new method for separating racemic acid into its left- and right- handed components. His original method, involving the manual separation of the crystals, was laborious and extremely limited in applicability. The central feature of the new method was the chemical combination of racemic acid with optically active bases. Under appropriate conditions they affected the solubility of the resulting paratartrates in such a way as to favor the crystallization of only one of the two forms that together compose the paratartrate. Although introduced by Pasteur only for the case of racemic acid, this new method clearly had wider applicability and was soon used to separate the left- and right- handed components in other "racemic" substances (substances inactive by compensation)." Paris, Crapart, Caille et Ravier, An X - 1802. 8vo. 2 cont. full mottled calf. Rebacked but preserving original spine. Spine gilt with title-and tomelabels in leather. A little rubbed. 2 halftitles. XLIV,484;(4),624 pp. Occasional a little brownspotted. First edition in book form of this his main philosophical work and one of the most concise expressions of materialistic philosophy in the Enlightment. - The "Rapports" is presented as "simple physiological researches", and the first 6 were read in the sessions of the Institute de France and printed 1802. His materialistic philosophy, based on his observations as a physician, states that all psychology can be reduced to biology, that all mental processes is a function of the (biological) brain which contains only physiological processes caused by sensations. In the "Rapports" he also termed the science of man "anthropologie".

Leipzig, J.A. Barth, 1904. Contemp. hcloth, tears to hinges at upper part of spine. "Annalen der Physik. Vierte Folge. Band 14. Herausgegeben von Paul Drude". VIII,1040 pp. and 3 plates. The Einstein paper: pp. 354-362. Internally clean and fine. The whole volume offered. First edition of Einstein's fifth work. "It was in this last of his early series of papers, before the announcement of the theory of relativity in 1905, that Einstein introduced a new theme. Einstein asked for the physical significance of the constant now known as Boltzmann's konstant 'k'.It was already well known from the theory of the ideal gas that 'k' was simply related to the gas constant 'R' and to Avogardo's number, the number of molecules in a gram-molecular weight of any substance. Einstein showed that 'k' entered into still another basic equation of the statistical theory, the expression for the mean square fluctuation of the energy about its average value. This meant that 'k' determines the thermal stability of a system...the paper contains the seeds of much of his later work...(Walter Alicke). - Weil No 5.

FARADAY, MICHAEL. .- THE ORIGIN OF THE ELECTROMAGNETIC THEORY OF LIGHT.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn42292
(London, Richard Taylor and William Francis, 1852). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1852 - Part I. Pp. 25-56, textillustr. Clean and fine. First appearance of a historical paper in electromagnetical theory. Faraday in this paper defines his key concept "lines of force" and summarizes in what connections he used it and he shows how it explains the pehenomena of magnetism and electricity. His insistance of the importence of the electromagnetic fields of force was the historical starting point of the electrical side of modern theories of field physics. Maxwell later translated these ideas into mathematical form, and developed them into his theory of electromagnetic waves.Especially notable in this paper is: As all space is permeated by lines of force, Faraday suggests that light and radiant heat might be tranverse vibrations propagated along these lines of force. In this way he proposed to "dismiss the aether" and to replace it by lines of force between centres, the centres together with their lines of force constituting the particles of material substance. If the existance of a luminiferous aether were to be admitted he suggests that it might be the vehicle of magnetic force "for it is not at all unlikely that if there be an aether, it should have other uses than simply the conveyance of radiations" (section 3075 in this paper offered). This sentece may be regarded as THE ORIGIN OF THE ELECTROMAGNETIC THEORY OF LIGHT (Whittaker in: A History of the theories of the Aether and Electricity, I: pp. 194-95).From 1831 to 1852 Michael Faraday published his "Experimental Researches in Electricity" in The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. These papers contain not only an impressive series of experimental discoveries, but also a collection of heterodox theoretical concepts on the nature of these phenomena expressed in terms of lines of forces and fields. He published 30 papers in all under this general title. They represents Faraday's most importent work, are classics in both chemistry and physics and are the experimental foundations for Maxwell's electro-magnetic theory of light, using Faraday's concepts of lines of force or tubes of magnetic and electrical forces. His many experiments on the effects of electricity and magnetism presented in these papers lead to the fundamental discoveries of 'induced electricity' (the Farday current), the electronic state of matter, the identity of electricity from different sources, equivalents in electro-chemical decomposition, electrostatic induction, hydro-electricity, diamagnetism, relation of gravity to electricity, atmospheric magnetism and many other."Among experimental philosophers Faraday holds by universal consent the foremost place. The memoirs in which his discoveries are enshrined will never ceaseto be read with admiration and delight; and future generations will preserve with an affection not less enduring the personal records and familiar letters, which recall the memory of his humble and unselfish spirit."(Edmund Whittaker in A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity).
