Upsala, Johan Edman, 1783. 8vo. In contemporary half calf with five raised bands, spine with gilt lettering and ornamentation. Ex-libris pasted on to pasted down front end-paper. Light wear to extremities, internally fine and clean. (24), 366, (10) pp. First Swedish translation of the official account of Cook's second voyage and Georg Forster's unofficial Voyage round the World."Cook earned his place in history by opening up the Pacific to western civilization and by the foundation of British Australia. The world was given for the first time an essentially complete knowledge of the Pacific Ocean and Australia, and Cook proved once and for all that there was no great southern continent, as had always been believed. He also suggested the existence of antarctic land in the southern ice ring, a fact which was not proved until the explorations of the nineteenth century" (Printing and the Mind of Man p.135). "The success of Cook's first voyage led the Admiralty to send him on a second expedition, described in the present work, which was to circumnavigate the globe as far south as possible in search of any southern continents. The men of this expedition became the first to cross the Antarctic Circle. Further visits were made to New Zealand, and on two great sweeps Cook made an astonishing series of discoveries and rediscoveries including Easter Island, the Marquesas, Tahiti and the Society Islands, Niue, the Tonga Islands, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, Norfolk Island, […] Cook discovered and charted South Georgia, after which he called at Cape Town, St. Helena and Ascension, and the Azores. This voyage produced a vast amount of information concerning the Pacific peoples and islands, proved the value of the chronometer as an aid to finding longitude, and improved techniques for preventing scurvy" (Hill p.123)

Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1884. Contemp.hcalf. Raised bands, gilt spine. Spine very slightly rubbed. Small stamp on htitle, title and verso of titlepage."Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg. von G. Wiedemann". Neue Folge Bd. 23. VIII,696 pp. and 8 folded plates. Röntgen's paper: pp. 1-40 a. 259-298, 2 folded plates. - Hertz's paper: pp. 84-103. Clean and fine. First printing of Röntgen's early paper on the heat absorption in vapor. "Having constructed a very sensitive air thermometer, he was able to measure the absorption of heat in water vapor, and his flair for experiment was also shown by his work on the compressibility of liquids and solids."(DSB XI, p.530).An. HERTZ'S paper: This is a major paper by Hertz in which he gives simple proofs of Maxwell's fundamental equations. "In 1884, at Kiel, Hertz had already carried out a study of Maxwell's theory. It was a theoretical response to Helmholtz' general problem of deciding between the electrodynamical theories. Whereas Helmholtz had shown that the experimental decision lay with unclosed currents, Hertz showed that a theoretical decision could be made on the basis of predictions for closed currents. Hertz proved that Maxwell's equations were compatible with the physical assumptions shared by all electrodynamical theories and that the equations of the contending theories were not. He concluded that if the choice lay solely between Maxwell's equations and the equations of the other type of theory, then Maxwell's were clearly preferable." (DSB VI, pp. 344-45).The volume contains also an importent paper by OTTO RICHARD LUMMER his Inauguraldissertation: "Über eine neue Inteferenzerscheinung an Planparallelen Glasplatten und eine Methode, die Planparallelität solcher Gläser zu prüfen". Pp. 40-84 a. 1 plate. and "Ueber eine neue Inteferenzerscheinung." pp. 513-548. - Also papers by Kundt, Kohlrausch, Weber and others.

First edition in the rare Offprint, still called "Abdruck", but having separate printed title and separate pagination. See Weil No. 165, where this is not mentioned.Weil No. 165 with an asterix, denoting a major work. "The Unified Field-Theory is one of the last importent works by Einstein. This paper presents a new development which was immediate news; translations and abstracts of ite appeared at once, besides numerous articles in general periodicals" (W. Alicke). The early Offprints from "Sitzungsberichten..." are called "Sonderabdruck" up to Weil No.165 (including this). From Weil 166 they are called "Sonderausgabe...". - Before 161 (up to 160) the Offprints do not have separate title and pagination (the pagination follows the numbering in the periodical). From 166 the Offprint has both separate printed title and pagination. - ( So Weil Nos 161-165 is still "Abdruck", but with separate title and pagination). These facts are not mentioned in the bibliographies.

(A total of 129 plates out of 136) Beautiful later edition the first work of its kind; "Recreational Mathematics".Qzanam's "contributions consisted of popular treatises and reference works on "useful and practical mathematics," and an extremely popular work on mathematical recreations; the latter had by far the more lasting impact. Ozanam’s Récréations may be regarded as the forerunner of modern books on mathematical recreations. He drew heavily on the works of Bachet de Méziriac, Mydorge, Leurechon, and Daniel Schwenter; his own contributions were somewhat less significant, for he was not a particularly creative mathematician. The work was later augmented and revised by Montucla and, still later, was translated into English by Hutton (1803)."(DSB).

FIZEAU, ARMAND HIPPOLYTE - THE FIZEAU EXPERIMENT ON THE VELOCITY OF LIGHT IN MEDIA.

Paris, Victor Masson, Imprimerie de Bachelier, 1859. 8vo. Contemp. hcalf, raised bands, gilt spine. Light wear along edges. Small stamps on verso of titlepage and on verso of plates. In "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", 3me Series - Tome LVII. 512 pp. and 4 plates. (The entire volume offered). Fizeau's paper: pp. 385-404. Some scattered brownspots. First printing of a highly importent paper in the history of physics, "It is less famous, for some reason, than the failure of Michelson and Morley to detect the aether drag, but NO LESS SIGNIFICANT. For it showed that the velocity of light increases in a medium according to the formula, v (1 - 1/n2), where v is the velocity of the medium, and n is the refractive index"(Gillespie in "The Edge of Objecticity" p. 427). Fizeau shows that the velocity of light is higher in water flowing in the direction of the beam than that of light propagating in the direction opposite the direction of flow. The paper offered is the full text of the research, there appeared an extract of it in Comptes Rendus in 1851. Albert Einstein later pointed out the IMPORTENCE OF THE EXPERIMENT FOR SPECIAL RELATIVITY.Fizeau's result was replicated by Albert Michelson and Edward Morley in 1886 repeated the experiment on a larger scale and confirmed Fizeau's results., and in 1914 it was confirmed by Pieter Zeeman. It was Arago in 1838, who suggested this "crucial experiment" to decide between the corpuscular and undulatory theories of light by comparingthe speed of light in water and in air.. It vindicated the undulatory position. It was shown by Hendrik Lorentz (1892, 1895) that the experiment can be explained by the reaction of the moving water upon the interfering waves without the need of any aether entrainment. On this occasion, Lorentz introduced a different time coordinate for moving bodies within the aether, the so called Local time (an early form of the Lorentz transformation for small velocities compared to the speed of light). In 1895, Lorentz went a step further and explained the coefficient by local time alone and without mentioning any interaction of light and matter.

lyn46362
(London, Richard Taylor, 1833). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1833 - Part II. Pp. 253-284. Clean and fine. First appearance of a main paper in the history of chemistry. "Graham's major contribution to inorganic chemistry is presented in a paper entitled "Researcheson thee Arseniates, Phosphates....." 1833 (the paper offered)...his elucidation of the differences between the three phosphoric acids and his discovery of their polybasicity provided Liebig with the clue to the modern concept of polybasic acids..."(A Source Book in Chemistry p. 333).Graham’s major contribution to inorganic chemistry is his paper !Researches on the Arseniates, Phosphates, and Modifications of Phosphoric Acid," in which he elucidated the differences between the three phosphoric acids. This research and the style of the paper are reminiscent of Joseph Black’s work on magnesia and the alkalies carried out in Glasgow eighty years earlier. Graham’s discovery of the polybasicity of these acids provided Justus Liebig with the clue to the modern concept of polybasic acids. Of this classic work the eminent German chemist and historian of chemistry Albert Ladenburg has said, "so much has seldom been accomplished by a single investigation."(DSB) "In the Preface to...Graham's papers...Dr. Angus Smith has indicated in precise...language Graham's position in that chain of thinkers which includes Leucippus, Lucretius, Newton and Dalton (Thorpe)"Thomas Graham, the Scottish Chemist, first president of the Chemical Society of London, and one of the chief founders of physical chemistry. He formulated Graham's Law of diffusion relating the rate of diffusion of gases to their densities, discovered and named the process of dialysis used for separating colloids from crystalloids, studied the three forms of phosphoric and arsenics acids that led to the developpement of the concept of polybasic acids, a major contribution to inorganic chemistry (the paper offered).

Richter, del. et lith. - Walter, Imp. Fine and clean. Ab. a half cm. of right margin with remains of textpaper, not affecting image in any way..The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.
