VOTHMANN, JOHANN GEORG.

Leipzig Weidmann und Reich, 1783. 8vo. In contemporary marbled paper covered boards. Corners bumped and with some loss of paper to spine. Internally nice and clean. (20), 180 pp. + 1 folded plate. The exceedingly rare first edition of Vothmann’s prizewinning work: a guide to farmers on how to cultivate a garden. In 1779, The Royal Danish agricultural Society in Copenhagen announced a prize. An author was to create a guide on how to maintain farm gardens. The instruction to be formulated in the form of a catechism with questions and answers, should be suitable for farmers. Vothmann thought that farmers from the “German provinces of Denmark” would be of little help with a work in the Danish language. Therefore, he participated with a German guide, which was submitted in January 1781 after the deadline. The guide was well received by the society, which covered the costs of printing. It received a second award. It was probably printed in the autumn of 1782 but bore the year 1783 on the title page. Johann Georg Vothmann was a German horticulturalist and author. He is known for his contributions to agricultural literature, particularly regarding the cultivation and maintenance of gardens specifically aimed at farmers and urban gardeners.

CAYLEY, ARTHUR. - A FUNDAMENTAL PAPER ON INVARIANT THEORY.

lyn49410
(London, Richard Taylor and William Francis, 1854). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1854, Vol. 144 - Part I. Pp. 245-258. First printing of the first paper in Cayley's famous memoirs on 'quantics', a term he coined for algebraic forms. In this paper Cayley throughout remodelled the whole basis for Invariant Theory."In addition to his part in founding the theory of abstract groups, Cayley has a number of important theorems to his credit: perhaps the best known is that every finite group whatsoever is isomorphic with a suitable group of permutations (see the first paper of 1854). This is often reckoned to be one of the three most important theorems of the subject, the others being the theorems of Lagrange and Sylow. But perhaps still more significant was his early appreciation of the way in which the theory of groups was capable of drawing together many different domains of mathematics: his own illustrations, for instance, were drawn from the theories of elliptic functions, matrices, quantics, quaternions, homographic transformations, and the theory of equations. If Cayley failed to pursue his abstract approach, this fact is perhaps best explained in terms of the enormous progress he was making in these subjects taken individually."(DSB)

Paris, Jean Boudot, 1704. 4to. Without wrappers. Extracted from "Mémoires de l'Academie des Sciences. Année 1702". Pp. 308-328 a. 2 large folded engraved plates. A few small brownspots. Wide-margined. First appearance of a classic paper in the theory of sound (his second paper on Acoustics). Saveur had his first founding paper printed in 1701 "Systeme général des Intervalles des Sons, & son Application à tous les Systèmes & à tous les Instrumens de Musique." in which he developed the new subject "acoustique" (and coined the term), In the paper offered he was the first to use beasts to determine the frequency difference and he was thus able to calculate the absolute frequencies."To determine absolute frequency, Sauveur used a pair of organ pipes a small half-tone apart in just intonation (frequency ratio 25:24). This interval is sufficiently small that the beats can be counted, for low pitches. Furthermore, the interval can be obtained accurately by tuning through thirds and perfect fifths (for example, by tuning up two major thirds and then down a fifth). As a results of experiments done with Deslander, and organ builder, Sauveur found that the frequency of an organ pipe five Paris feet long was between 100 and 102 cps. Sauveur claimed to have obtained consistent results from experiments done with other piopes. Newton made a rough check of Sauveurs eresults..."(DSB XII, p. 128).

He joined an Expedition to Arabia as a geologist. His real chance came in 1875, however, when he accepted an appointment as a professor of geology and mining in the Imperial College of Engineering at Tokyo. He remained in Japan for twenty years and there had a marvelous opportunity to study earthquakes, for no land is more riven with them than Japan. In 1880 he invented the seismograph...and established a chain of seismographs in Japan and elsewhere, marking the beginning of modern seismology."(Asimow).The paper describes 8 sets of experiments set up at different stations in Japan. On Milne's initiative the Seismological Society of Japan was founded, and the emperor of Japan conferred upon him the Order of the Rising Sun.

London, Printed by Taylor and Francis - Published by the Author, (1862-) 73. Folio. Papersize 52x36,5 cm. Lithographed and fully handcoloured. 2 adults in a tree. J. Gould & H.C. Richter, del. et lith. - Walter, Imp. Fine and clean. The plate is accompanied with the original textleaf. (2) pp. This is an original plate from Goulds great work "The Birds of Great Britain", issued between 1862 and 1873. The plates in this work were executed by Gould himself, and a few by J. Wolf, H.C. Richer and Hart. Together with Audubon's plates, the Gould-plates are considered the best bird-art ever produced, AND THE PLATES IN HIS "BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN" ARE THE PEAK OF GOULD'S ARTISTIC LIFE. In the foreword Gould stresses the difference from his "Birds of Europe" in the treatment of the illustrations, the inclusion here of the figures of the baby birds and nests, and he comments "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought.". Elsewhere he remarked upon employing "almost all colourists in London." - Wood p. 364. - Nissen No. 372. - Sitwell 102. - Zimmer pp. 261-62. - Not in Jean Anker.

First printing of these two milestone-papers in physiology in which Bernard discovers and isolates glycogen from the liver, shows that it is converted into blood glucose, and discovers the process of gluconeogenesis. He further creates the concepts "experimental determination" and "local interieur"Bernard undertook the task of tracing out the various transformations of food stuffs within the animal organism, beginning with the carbohydrates; and he not only found, contrary to the accepted view, that sugar was formed in the liver, but he was also able to isolate a substance from the hepatic tissue which, though not sugar, was converted by fermentation into dextrose. He made a special study of its properties and called it "glycogen"."The culmination of Bernard's work on the glycogenic function of the liver. He invented the term "internal secretion", and can be said to have started the scientific investigation of the internal secretions, although for 30 years the significance of his work was not generally realized. By his research on glycogene Bernard showed that the body not only can break down, but can also build up, complex chemical substances."(Garrison & Morton) .Claude Bernard (1813-78) was a key figure in French nineteenth-century science, and one of the world's great physiologists. Ex-libris pasted on to pasted down front end-paper. A nice and clean copy. XXX, (34), 288, (2), 267 pp. First French translation of Rowe's "Friendship in Death", originally published in 1728, a Jansenist miscellany of imaginary letters from the dead to the living. It became her most popular work, with over 79 editions by 1825 and ten more by 1840. It significantly outsold contemporary works like Defoe's “Robinson Crusoe” .The book consists of fictional letters from deceased loved ones and virtuous friends who have reached heaven and offer spiritual guidance to ensure their living friends’ and relatives' salvation. The letters discuss moral issues and contemporary dilemmas, resembling both moral essays and novelistic situations. Rowe's intent, as stated in the preface, is to promote the belief in the soul's immortality and the virtuous life it necessitates.
